P.'P. Preface. I CANNOT plead, according to the approved mock-modest formula of incipient authors, “the importunities of, perhaps, too partial friends,” as my excuse for rushing into authorship. I am urged by a far more genuine, and disagreeable motive. My purse, like Falstaff's, has long suffered from atrophy. “I can get no remedy,” says the fat knight, “against this consumption of the purse: borrowing only lingers and lingers it out, but the disease is incurable.” The malady, however, may be alleviated; and it is in the hope of escaping, for a time, from the pangs of this detestable impecuniosity that I publish my tiny volume.

  • Idioms-And-Expressions.Pdf
Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thai- land, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn com- mon, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscom- munication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to as- sist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used in context.

Volume 11, Issue 4 A collection of writing pieces chosen by Erickson students to demonstrate their writing growth over the course of the 2014- 2015 school year. The Squirrel and the Dinosaur! Fable By: Gavin Grade 5 Based off of David and Goliath! Once upon a time, a long time ago, there was a squirrel named Dave and a di- nosaur named Giant Bob. Giant Bob wants to conquer the squirrels for multiple reasons. First, they have good land. The land had plenty of trees, rocks, other animals, water, just about any- thing a dinosaur would want. Second, they taste good. What meat eating dinosaur doesn’t want a life supply of food? Third, they are easy to destroy' or are they& When the squirrels saw the dinosaur, they hid in any place they could find. (n- der trees, behind rocks, or in the leaves. With this, Giant Bob bragged. )HA-HA-HA! I will destroy you all any second and will be the greatest, most powerful, and smartest dinosaur on Earth, -ou are ants just trying to flee from me, but nobody can escape my enormous eyes. .othing can stop me,/ Dave knew that Giant Bob wasn%t no match for his weapon, God, and the faith Dave had made him even stronger. 0e was one of all the squirrels who praised God but it seemed that he was the only one who remembered his power. Dave remem- bered the stories his mother taught to him about 1dam and Eve. 0ow he created the sky, the world, the land, the sea, and all of the animals, not to mention himself.

  • The World Health Organization Is Taking Cash Handouts from Junk Food Giants by Vigilant Citizen October 23, 2012
The World Health Organization is Taking Cash Handouts from Junk Food Giants By Vigilant Citizen October 23, 2012 The World Health Organization (WHO) is the United Nationʼs “public health” arm and has 194 member states. While its official mission is “the attainment by all people of the highest possible level of health“, it is also clear that it works according to a specific agenda, one that laid out by the world elite and the organizations that are part of it. In the article entitled ‘Contagionʼ or How Disaster Movies “Educate” the Masses, weʼve seen how the WHO was involved in the promotion of mass vaccination campaigns following (bogus) disease scares, of civilian camps, of the bar-coding of individuals and so forth. More proof of the WHOʼs “elite bias” has been recently uncovered by a study: The organization has been taking hundreds of thousands of dollars from the worldʼs biggest pushers of unhealthy foods such as Coca-Cola, Nestlé and Unilever. It is relying on these companies for advice on how to fight obesity..é which is the equivalent of asking a drug dealer for advice on how stay off drugs and NOT buy his product. Coca-Cola, Nestlé and Unilever are not simply “food companies, they are gigantic conglomerates that produce and distribute an enormous proportion of processed foods across the world. In the article entitled Irrational Consumerism (or The Few Companies Who Feed the World), I described how only a few mega-conglomerates own most of the worldʼs brands of processed foods. To refresh your memory here are some of the brands

  • The Bondman Hall Caine
The Bondman Hall Caine CHAPTER I. STEPHEN ORRY, SEAMAN, OF STAPPEN. In the latter years of last century, H. Jorgen Jorgensen was Governor-General of Iceland. He was a Dane, born in Copenhagen, apprenticed to the sea on board an English trader, afterwards employed as a petty officer in the British navy, and some time in the command of a Danish privateer in an Alliance of Denmark and France against England. A rover, a schemer, a shrewd man of affairs, who was honest by way of interest, just by policy, generous by strategy, and who never suffered his conscience, which was not a good one, to get the better of him. In one of his adventures he had sailed a Welsh brig from Liverpool to Reykjavik. This had been his introduction to the Icelandic capital, then a little, hungry, creeping settlement, with its face towards America and its wooden feet in the sea. It had also been his introduction to the household of the Welsh merchant, who had a wharf by the old Canning basin at Liverpool, a counting-house behind his residence in Wolstenholme Square, and a daughter of five and twenty. Jorgen, by his own proposal, was to barter English produce for Icelandic tallow. On his first voyage he took out a hundred tons of salt, and brought back a heavy cargo of lava for ballast. On his second voyage he took out the Welshman's daughter as his wife, and did not again trouble to send home an empty ship. He had learned that mischief was once more brewing between England and Denmark, had violated his English letters of marque and run into Copenhagen, induced the authorities there, on the strength of his knowledge of English affairs, to appoint him to the Governor- Generalship of Iceland (then vacant) at a salary of four hundred pounds a year, and landed at Reykjavik with the Icelandic flag, of the white falcon on the blue ground--the banner of the Vikings--at the masthead of his father-in-law's Welsh brig.

  • Troop Games – Large Area
Troop Program Resources TROOP GAMES – LARGE AREA These games require a large area. Many of Baden-Powell’s wide games were played in a vast outdoor arena, much more extensive than what we normally can provide at a troop meeting. But, like in Scouting’s early days, many of the games listed here have the same capacity to transport our Scouts to a land of adventure and challenge where troop teams can let off steam while having a lot of fun. “wide” = large indoor or outdoor setting for those activities requiring a greater amount of space “in” = indoor activity “out” = outdoor activity ANTELOPE RACE (wide, in or out) – Method: On signal, troop teams run in single file, each member with one hand on the belt of the Scout ahead, to a point 50 yards away. They make a left turn and run back to the starting point. Falling down or breaking apart disqualifies the team. – Scoring: The fastest team wins. BLINDFOLDED SOCCER (wide, out) – Materials: blindfolds for half the Scouts, two soccer balls – Method: Each team tries to kick the ball past the the other team’s end zone as many times as possible. Divide the Scouts into two teams, or use patrols. Each team then divides into pairs. One member of each pair is blindfolded. The game starts when the referee throws or kicks two soccer balls into the middle of the soccer field or playing area. – Rules: 1. Only the blindfolded Scout may kick the ball; the sighted Scout can only offer verbal directions to his partner. 2.

  • GAMES – for JUNIOR OR SENIOR HIGH YOUTH GROUPS Active
GAMES – FOR JUNIOR OR SENIOR HIGH YOUTH GROUPS Active Games Alka-Seltzer Fizz: Divide into two teams. Have one volunteer on each team lie on his/her back with a Dixie cup in their mouth (bottom part in the mouth so that the opening is facing up). Inside the cup are two alka-seltzers. Have each team stand ten feet away from person on the ground with pitchers of water next to the front. On “go,” each team sends one member at a time with a mouthful of water to the feet of the person lying on the ground. They then spit the water out of their mouths, aiming for the cup. Once they’ve spit all the water they have in their mouth, they run to the end of the line where the next person does the same. The first team to get the alka-seltzer to fizz wins. Ankle Balloon Pop: Give everyone a balloon and a piece of string or yarn. Have them blow up the balloon and tie it to their ankle. Then announce that they are to try to stomp out other people's balloons while keeping their own safe. Last person with a blown up balloon wins. Ask The Sage: A good game for younger teens. Ask several volunteers to agree to be "Wise Sages" for the evening. Ask them to dress up (optional) and wait in several different rooms in your facility. The farther apart the Sages are the better. Next, prepare a sheet for each youth that has questions that only a "Sage" would be able to answer.
