REVIEW Fungal Infections From Human and Animal Contact Dennis J. Baumgardner, MD Aurora University of Wisconsin Medical Group, Aurora Health Care, Milwaukee, WI; Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, Madison, WI; Center for Urban Population Health, Milwaukee, WI Abstract Fungal infections in humans resulting from human or animal contact are relatively uncommon, but they include a significant proportion of dermatophyte infections. Some of the most commonly encountered diseases of the integument are dermatomycoses. Human or animal contact may be the source of all types of tinea infections, occasional candidal infections, and some other types of superficial or deep fungal infections. This narrative review focuses on the epidemiology, clinical features, diagnosis and treatment of anthropophilic dermatophyte infections primarily found in North America.

  • Hoverfly Visitors to the Flowers of Caltha in the Far East Region of Russia
Egyptian Journal of Biology, 2009, Vol. 11, pp 71-83 Printed in Egypt. Egyptian British Biological Society (EBB Soc) ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The potential for using flower-visiting insects for assessing site quality: hoverfly visitors to the flowers of Caltha in the Far East region of Russia Valeri Mutin 1*, Francis Gilbert 2 & Denis Gritzkevich 3 1 Department of Biology, Amurskii Humanitarian-Pedagogical State University, Komsomolsk-na-Amure, Khabarovsky Krai, 681000 Russia 2 School of Biology, University Park, University of Nottingham, Nottingham NG7 2RD, UK. 3 Department of Ecology, Komsomolsk-na-Amure State Technical University, Komsomolsk-na-Amure, Khabarovsky Krai, 681013 Russia Abstract Hoverfly (Diptera: Syrphidae) assemblages visiting Caltha palustris in 12 sites in the Far East were analysed using partitioning of Simpson diversity and Canonical Coordinates Analysis (CCA). 154 species of hoverfly were recorded as visitors to Caltha, an extraordinarily high species richness. The main environmental gradient affecting syrphid communities identified by CCA was human disturbance and variables correlated with it. CCA is proposed as the first step in a method of site assessment. Keywords: Syrphidae, site assessment for conservation, multivariate analysis Introduction It is widely agreed amongst practising ecologists that a reliable quantitative measure of habitat quality is badly needed, both for short-term decision making and for long-term monitoring. Many planning and conservation decisions are taken on the basis of very sketchy qualitative information about how valuable any particular habitat is for wildlife; in addition, managers of nature reserves need quantitative tools for monitoring changes in quality. Insects are very useful for rapid quantitative surveys because they can be easily sampled, are numerous enough to provide good estimates of abundance and community structure, and have varied life histories which respond to different elements of the habitat.

Harl et al. Malar J (2019) 18:305 https://doi.org/10.1186/s12936-019-2940-6 Malaria Journal RESEARCH Open Access The nuclear 18S ribosomal DNAs of avian haemosporidian parasites Josef Harl1, Tanja Himmel1, Gediminas Valkiūnas2 and Herbert Weissenböck1* Abstract Background: Plasmodium species feature only four to eight nuclear ribosomal units on diferent chromosomes, which are assumed to evolve independently according to a birth-and-death model, in which new variants origi- nate by duplication and others are deleted throughout time. Moreover, distinct ribosomal units were shown to be expressed during diferent developmental stages in the vertebrate and mosquito hosts. Here, the 18S rDNA sequences of 32 species of avian haemosporidian parasites are reported and compared to those of simian and rodent Plasmodium species. Methods: Almost the entire 18S rDNAs of avian haemosporidians belonging to the genera Plasmodium (7), Haemo- proteus (9), and Leucocytozoon (16) were obtained by PCR, molecular cloning, and sequencing ten clones each. Phy- logenetic trees were calculated and sequence patterns were analysed and compared to those of simian and rodent malaria species. A section of the mitochondrial CytB was also sequenced. Results: Sequence patterns in most avian Plasmodium species were similar to those in the mammalian parasites with most species featuring two distinct 18S rDNA sequence clusters. Distinct 18S variants were also found in Haemopro- teus tartakovskyi and the three Leucocytozoon species, whereas the other species featured sets of similar haplotypes. The 18S rDNA GC-contents of the Leucocytozoon toddi complex and the subgenus Parahaemoproteus were extremely high with 49.3% and 44.9%, respectively.

1 CATALOGUE OF PROTOZOAN PARASITES RECORDED IN AUSTRALIA PETER J. O’DONOGHUE & ROBERT D. ADLARD O’Donoghue, P.J. & Adlard, R.D. 2000 02 29: Catalogue of protozoan parasites recorded in Australia. Memoirs of the Queensland Museum 45(1):1-164. Brisbane. ISSN 0079-8835. Published reports of protozoan species from Australian animals have been compiled into a host- parasite checklist, a parasite-host checklist and a cross-referenced bibliography. Protozoa listed include parasites, commensals and symbionts but free-living species have been excluded. Over 590 protozoan species are listed including amoebae, flagellates, ciliates and ‘sporozoa’ (the latter comprising apicomplexans, microsporans, myxozoans, haplosporidians and paramyxeans). Organisms are recorded in association with some 520 hosts including mammals, marsupials, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates. Information has been abstracted from over 1,270 scientific publications predating 1999 and all records include taxonomic authorities, synonyms, common names, sites of infection within hosts and geographic locations. Monograph on Dimorphic Fungi A guide for classification, isolation and identification of dimorphic fungi, diseases caused by them, diagnosis and treatment By Mohamed Refai and Heidy Abo El-Yazid Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Cairo University 2014 1 Preface When I see the analytics made by academia.edu for the visitors to my publication has reached 244 in 46 countries in one month only, this encouraged me to continue writing documents for the benefit of scientists and students in the 5 continents. In the last year I uploaded 3 monographs, namely 1. Monograph on yeasts, Refai, M, Abou-Elyazeed, H. and El-Hariri, M. 2. Monograph on dermatophytes, Refai, M, Abou-Elyazeed, H. and El-Hariri, M. 3. Monograph on mycotoxigenic fungi and mycotoxins, Refai, M. and Hassan, A.
