This lecture explains the effectiveness of non-violent resistance by examining multiple cases of nonviolence struggle with the aim of understanding the principles that led to their success. He has presented papers at academic conferences in North America, Europe, and India, including the German Studies Association, the World History Association and the International Conference of Asian Scholars (Berlin). Nietzsche's Orientalism
Duncan Large Nietzsche’s Orientalism Abstract: Edward Said may omit the German tradition from his ground-breaking study of Orientalism (1978), but it is clearly appropriate to describe Nietzsche as Orientalist in outlook. Without ever having left Western Europe, or even having read very widely on the subject, he indulges in a series of undiscriminating stereotypes about “Asia” and “the Orient”, borrowing from a range of contemporary sources. His is an uncom- mon Orientalism, though, for his evaluation of supposedly “Oriental” characteristics is generally positive, and they are used as a means to critique European decadence and degeneration. Because he defines the type “Oriental” reactively in opposition to the “European”, though, it is contradictory. Furthermore, on Nietzsche’s analysis “Europe” itself is less a type or a geographical designation than an agonal process of repeated self-overcoming. He reverses the received evaluation of the Europe-Orient opposition only in turn to deconstruct the opposition itself. Europe first emerged out of Asia in Ancient Greece, Nietzsche claims, and it has remained a precarious achieve- ment ever since, repeatedly liable to “re-orientalisation”. He argues that “Oriental” Christianity has held Europe in its sway for too long, but his preferred antidote is a further instance of European “re-orientalisation”, at the hands of the Jews, whose productive self-difference under a unified will he views as the best model for the “good Europeans” of the future. Histoire intellectuelle de la Chine Mme Anne Cheng, professeure Cours : Confucius revisité : textes anciens, nouveaux discours (suite) Le cours de cette année s’est inscrit dans le prolongement de celui de 2008-2009 où j’ai inauguré mon enseignement au Collège de France en proposant une « revisite » de Confucius, plus spécifiquement celui des Entretiens (en chinois Lunyu 論語). Comme je l’ai rappelé en commençant, c’est avec une traduction de ce livre (qui a eu – et a toujours – en Chine et dans toute l’Asie orientale une portée comparable à celle des Évangiles dans l’Europe chrétienne) que j’ai fait mes premières armes en sinologie il y a trente ans. Mais il se trouve aussi que nous assistons actuellement à un spectaculaire « retour de Confucius » en Chine continentale. C’est ce qui est désormais devenu un véritable phénomène de société que j’ai choisi comme point de départ d’une démarche à rebours. L’année dernière, nous avons vu comment la figure de Confucius s’est trouvée étroitement mêlée aux vicissitudes de la longue marche de la Chine vers la modernité occidentale, la question cruciale étant : dans quelle mesure la Chine a-t-elle besoin de tabler sur son passé (identifié comme confucéen) pour assurer un fondement stable à une société en pleine mutation ? Ou bien, au contraire, dans quelle mesure a-t-elle besoin de faire table rase du passé pour avoir les coudées franches dans la course à la modernité ? Histoire intellectuelle de la Chine M me Anne C, professeure Cours : Confucius revisité : textes anciens, nouveaux discours Pourquoi avoir choisi de commencer par Confucius pour inaugurer une chaire d’Histoire intellectuelle de la Chine ? À cela au moins trois raisons. La première tient à un fait observable de prime abord:Confucius est le premier –quand ce n’est pas le seul – nom connu du grand public français, plus généralement européen et encore plus largement occidental, dès lors qu’il est question de la tradition chinoise. Ce personnage, qui a vécu aux e - e siècles avant l’ère chrétienne et dont la figure et l’enseignement ont fini par se confondre avec toute l’histoire de la Chine impériale du e siècle avant j.-C. jusqu’au début du e siècle, apparaît aujourd’hui, d’emblée et de manière évidente, comme la grande figure fondatrice de la pensée et de la culture chinoises, autant dire de l’identité chinoise dans son entier. C’est du moins ainsi qu’il est perçu dans le monde occidental et c’est également ainsi qu’il est présenté, exalté, voire instrumentalisé dans le monde chinois actuel. Mais encore faudrait-il se demander si cette identification de Confucius avec l’entité Chine a été vraie de tout temps ; il convient aussi de s’interroger sur les motivations d’une telle identification et, enfin, sur ses origines historiques. La deuxième raison paraît tout aussi évidente : actuellement, le texte le plus souvent associé à la figure de Confucius, à savoir les Entretiens ( Lunyu 論語) où sont consignés des fragments de dialogues entre le Maître et ses disciples ou ses contemporains, détient dans la culture chinoise, et plus largement dans les cultures environnantes d’Asie orientale, un statut à peu près équivalent aux Évangiles dans la culture européenne christianisée, au sens où il s’est non seulement profondément ancré dans les modes de penser, mais aussi jusque dans la langue et les manières de dire. -

Handbook of Reference Works in Traditional Chinese Studies (R. Eno, 2011) 9. WESTERN SINOLOGY AND FIELD JOURNALS This section of has two parts. The first outlines some aspects of the history of sinology in the West relevant to the contemporary shape of the field. The second part surveys some of the leading and secondary sinological journals, with emphasis on the role they have played historically. I. An outline of sinological development in the West The history of sinology in the West is over 400 years old. No substantial survey will be attempted here; that can wait until publication of The Lives of the Great Sinologists, a blockbuster for sure.1 At present, with Chinese studies widely dispersed in hundreds of teaching institutions, the lines of the scholarly traditions that once marked sharply divergent approaches are not as easy to discern as they were thirty or forty years ago, but they still have important influences on the agendas of the field, and they should be understood in broad outline. One survey approach is offered by the general introduction to Zurndorfer’s guide; its emphasis is primarily on the development of modern Japanese and Chinese scholarly traditions, and it is well worth reading. This brief summary has somewhat different emphases. A. Sinology in Europe The French school Until the beginning of the eighteenth century, Western views of China were principally derived from information provided by occasional travelers and by missionaries, particularly the Jesuits, whose close ties with the Ming and Ch’ing courts are engagingly portrayed by Jonathan Spence in his popular portraits, The Memory Palace of Matteo Ricci and Emperor of China. -
