Univ., 06531 Ankara, Turkey Nemrut is a historically active Pleistocene-Holocene stratovolcano located in eastern Turkey, adjacent to western shore of Lake Van and forms part of a chain that includes Mts. Süphan, Arrarat and Tendurek. Many of the volcanic rock units around Nemrut have not yet been dated, and most have only K/Ar dates. With the growing interest in and importance of the continental paleoclimate archives derived from Lake Van cores, efforts to better characterise Nemrut and understand it’s regional impact are underway. We have measured ten samples using the 40Ar/39Ar, single-crystal technique on sanidines liberated from 6 pumices, either falls or flows, 3 ignimbrites and one trachytic lava flow. Ages range from 5.3±1.8 ka to 171.4±3.2 ka (2σ). The age data are comparable to modern 40Ar/39Ar data derived from the literature but extend to younger ages and are generally 2-3 times more precise; improved precision is due to the greater number of individual crystals analysed, typically 20 or more. The youngest age was obtained from pumice within pyroclastic flow deposits on the caldera rim and yielded an age of 5.3±1.8 ka (2σ, MSWD=0.98, p=0.52, n=63). This unit is potentially age correlative with ash layers recognized in Lake Van and varve counted to 6005, 6888 and 7192 years BP (tephras C, D & E, [1]), a correlation supported by trace element geochemistry of pumice [2]. The welded Bitlis ignimbrite, sampled in the town of Bitlis some 25 km distant from Nemrut, yielded an age of 26.8±4.2 ka (2σ, MSWD=0.68, p=0.89, n=27) [1] Landmann et al. 1996 [2] Landmann et al. 2011 208208 .

Rising in all four directions, mountains encircle the peninsula of Anatolia. A part of the Alpine-Himalayan mountain range, Turkey has mountainous regions of different geological formations. The North Anatolian range skirts the Mediterranean shore. Turkey's magnificent mountains and forests are mostly undeveloped, existing as wonderful natural preserves for an extraordinary variety of wildlife, flora and fauna. Two of Turkey's most famous peaks are volcanoes, both inactive, Mt. Erciyes in Kayseri in Central Anatolia (3917 m) and Mt. Agri (Mt. Ararat 5137 m) in the East. Other well-known mountain ranges are the Rize-Ka‡kar (3932 m) in the Eastern Black Sea region, Nigde-Aladag (3756 m) in the Central Taurus range, and the Cilo and Sat Mountains (4136 m) near Hakkari in the Eastern Taurus. The mountainous nature of the country has influenced its cultural evolution. For centuries, nomads and semi-nomadic peoples have migrated annually to the fresh pastures of the higher elevations in the summer. These alpine meadows, called yayla, still represent a firm tie to traditional culture. For climbers and those interested in mountain geography, Turkey offers a wealth of exploration. Glaciers, volcanoes, and peculiar geological formations such as kars prove irresistible to researchers and students of geology. The challenging terrain offers great opportunities for aficionados of outdoor sports who find interesting experiences on the mountains of Eastern, Central and Southern Turkey.

It is considered a sacred mountain by all the three nations and their cultures. 2 Ilısu Dam is a recently activated dam on the Tigris River in southeastern Turkey. Upon its completion, 199 settlements and more than 300 mounds were flooded along with Hasankeyf, a 15,000-year-old village hosting different ethnicities and ancient artifacts. The tomb of Zeynel Bey and 800-year-old Artuklu Hamam are amongst the artifacts that have been relocated due to the flood. Unfortunately, the effects of the flood are unpredictable and still felt by many today; some of the locals are settled in tents and containers lacking infrastructures in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The extent of those far contacts is hard to estimate, but we assume that such contacts and the trade network, which we can study mainly through the obsidian trade, using terrestrial and maritime routes, with the interaction of big villages though a few intermediary steps, already full operating at that time, must have helped to transform the local hierarchies, economic interdependences and rituals, and for instance it could accelerated the end of Göbekli Tepe around mid PPNB. And therefore during the Late PPNB consolidated the central villages, key nodes in the trade networks, and these, in different ecological regions, reached between 10 and 15 ha, v. gr. in Basta, Beisamoun or ‘Ain Ghazal. And in such a way, those built interdependent Ancient “World” Systems.

Şayet, mağma yerkabuğu içinde kalırsa "derinlik volkaniz- ması", yeryüzüne ulaşır ise "yüzey volkanizması adı verilir. Volkanizmada esas rolü oynayan, erimiş silikatların gazlarla doygun bir karışımını oluşturan "mağma"'dır. Magmadan ayrılan gazların ve mağmanın yeryüzüne sıvı ya da katı halde ulaştığı baca veya fissür'e "volkan" denir. Dünyanın hareketli bir kuşağı üzerinde yeralan Türkiye, önce­ leri orojenik, daha sonra da epirojienik hareketlere maruz kalmıştır. Bunun bir sonucu olarak, çok kırıklı bir yapıya sahip olan Anado­ lu'da yarık erüpsiyonlan ve merkezi erüpsiyonlar tarih çağlarına ka­ dar devam etmişlerdir. Türkiye tektonik, deprem ve genç volkanik arazilerini gösteren haritalar karşılaştırıldığında, olaylar ve oluşum­ ları arasındaki ilgi açıkça görülmektedir (Haritalar 1, 2, 3). Mesozoik'in sonuna kadar volkanizma ile oluşan volkanik ara­ zi, zamanla aşınarak silinmiştir. III. Zaman'm ilk yansına (Paleo- jen'e) ait volkan topografyası çok aşınmıştır. III. Zaman'ın ikinci yansına (Neojen'e) ve IV. Zaman'a ait volkan reliefı ise Türkiye'de belirgindir. Faaliyet özelliklerine göre, ya Türkiye'nin en yüksek dağlannı meydana getirmişler, ya da geniş lâv platolan oluşturmuş­ lardır. Zamanla, bir kısım volkanik arazinin aşınmasından ise, Iç Anadolu'da olduğu gibi, Dünya'nın en ilginç topografyası meydana gelmiştir. Bunlara, volkanik infilâklar ile oluşan patlama kraterleri­ ni, maarlan ve diğerlerini de ilâve etmek mümkündür.     Eastern Anatolia: a hot spot in a collision zone without a mantle plume Mehmet Keskin Istanbul University, Faculty of Engineering, Department of Geological Engineering, 34320 Avcılar, Istanbul, Turkey. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Eastern Anatolia is one of the best examples of an active continental collision zone in the world. It comprises one of the high plateaus of the Alpine-Himalaya mountain belt with an average elevation of ~2 km above sea level. Almost two thirds of this plateau is covered by young volcanic units related to collision. They range in age from 11 Ma to Recent and have a thickness of up to 1 km in places. The collision-related volcanic province is not confined to Eastern Anatolia but extends across much of the Caucasus in the East, including Eastern Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Southern Russia, spanning a distance of some 1000 km. The region covered by the collision-related volcanic sequences comprises a regional domal shape (~1000 km in diameter), and this unique morphology is comparable to that of the Ethiopian High Plateau except for its north-south shortened asymmetrical shape. Recent geophysical data reveal that the lithospheric mantle is exceptionally thin or absent beneath this regional dome indicating that the aforementioned dome is currently supported by the asthenospheric mantle. By these features, the Eastern Anatolia-Iranian plateau and the Lesser Caucasus region as a whole can be regarded as the site of a "melting anomaly" or "hotspot" resembling closely the setting proposed for mantle plumes. However, geologic and geochemical data provide evidence against a plume origin.

The Turks took control of the region in 1461 and Sumela's political influence ceased but under Ottoman rule its religious community continued until the breakup of the Ottoman Empire. The present buildings probably date from the 12th century and the frescos from between 1710 and 1860. In the latter part of the First World War Trabzon was occupied by Russian forces and the Christian communities became involved in the ethnic struggles that preceded and accompanied that occupation.
