OUR ZONES OF INTERVENTION Since 2008, the Foundation has been operating in West Africa, particularly in Burkina Faso and in Niger. In July 2015, the Foundation discontinued its activities in Niger and transferred its assets to Larassu, an NGO set up by its Nigerian employees. The cumulative data as of 2008 in this report therefore include those from Niger unless otherwise noted. 4 Message from the President of the Board and from the General Manager In a country where 80% of the population live rurally and are primarily illiterate, the challenges are enormous. For UNDP Burkina, the major issues facing “the country of honest men” today include how to put sustainable development into practice; to build a stable, modern and solid economy; to promote political stability and economic integration on a sub- regional basis; to fight against poverty, and to nurture solidarity and alert, responsible citizenship. Benoit Desormeaux SEMAFO Foundation helps meet the challenges through investment in the most pressing regional needs. In view of the 40.1% poverty rate (2014) President, CPA, CA and primary school net enrolment rate of 64.4%, the Foundation maintains its focus on education and on income-generating activities. This year again, we built 10 classrooms, 46 latrines and supplied hand- washing posts and desk-benches to maximize students’ learning conditions. For the eighth year running, some 13,000 school kits were distributed in 50 schools within Burkina Faso. As a charitable organization, we go beyond the mere transferring of Chantal Guérin resources from one group to another: we provide added value. Our goal is General Manager, MBA to empower the different groups with which we are linked to become self- sufficient. Through the establishment of our 2012 savings and micro-credit project, 29 women’s groups were able to set up income-generating activities and obtain credit of close to $260,000 (FCFA 115,056,000). To foster empowerment of all beneficiaries of our income-generating projects, we place emphasis on training and market research. « The way of success We are grateful to each and every person who has been directly or is the way of continuous indirectly involved in helping us carry out our projects. • CARTOGRAPHIE DES ZONES SOCIO-RURALES Burkina Faso
