Newton 'Natural Resource Conservation LLC, Boulder City, NV 89005 E-mail:[email protected] Department of Environmental and Occupational Health, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, NV 89154 'National Park Service, Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Boulder City, NV 89005 By supplying food, water, cover, and numerous other habitat features, quality plant communities are essential to quality desert tortoise habitat. When desert environments are severely disturbed, reliable techniques for vegetation restoration can help recover, maintain, or improve essential habitat features. In Lake Mead National Recreation Area, representing among the most intact eastern Mojave Desert landscapes supporting tortoise, required road construction destroyed soil and vegetation along a new road alignment and necessitated restoration along the old alignment. In 2008, we began an experiment to evaluate ways to improve vegetation restoration success by testing effects of slurry/water treatments during salvage on 2,105 salvaged native perennial plants. We then assessed influences of topsoil salvage, watering techniques, and species on salvage survivors placed back on the disturbed site. Survival of salvaged plants after one year of nursery care was 48% (1,017 of 2,105 plants) and varied among 23 species but not by treatment. Salvage survivors placed back on the disturbed site exhibited 49% survival (570 of 1,153 plants, which included ones recruited during nursery residence) after three years. -

(9) Species groupings and subgeneric categories of tortoises rest on fairly secure bases; above this uncertainties increase. Placing almost all of these groups in the genus Testudo, as is most often done, does not in my opinion reflect the apparent fact that the homogeneity of tortoises is due to similar trends in several phyletic lines. Therefore the classification of Williams (1952) and Loveridge and Williams (1957), rather than the more recent but conservative treatment of Wermuth and Mertens (1961), is followed. NUMBER 21 20 DECEMBER 28, 1962 Testudo amphithorax Cope Referred to Stylemysl By WALTER AUFFENBERG' The testudinine turtle fauna of the White River Formation is of con- siderable interest, since it marks the first appearance of several important New World tortoise genera (Geochelone, Stylemys, and Gopherus). Further- marc, a number of species of tortoises referred to these genera from these beds have been described on the basis of very fragmentary materials. Thus, additional information on shell architecture and the configuration of various elements that comprise the axial and peripheral portions of the skeleton may be helpful in the determination of the validity and relation- ships of the several described forms. One of the species for which such information is highly desirable is Testudo omphithorax Cope (1873). An almost complete specimen of fossil tortoise in the University of Colorado Museum (U.C.M. No. 20575) has been compared with the material on which Cope based amphithorax (A.M.N.H. Nos. 1139, 1145, 1147) and is referred to this species without any doubt. It was collected by James Mellinger, close to the type locality of the species (Weld County, Colorado, near the head of Horse Tail Creek, Horse Tail Creek Member, White River Formation, Lower Oligocene). It consists of a complete shell and almost all the postcranial skeleton of an adult male specimen. Hofmeyr4, Silke Schweiger5, Albert Martínez-Silvestre6, Walter Joyce7 & Uwe Fritz 1* The fve extinct giant tortoises of the genus Cylindraspis belong to the most iconic species of the enigmatic fauna of the Mascarene Islands that went largely extinct after the discovery of the islands. To resolve the phylogeny and biogeography of Cylindraspis, we analysed a data set of 45 mitogenomes that includes all lineages of extant tortoises and eight near-complete sequences of all Mascarene species extracted from historic and subfossil material. Cylindraspis is an ancient lineage that diverged as early as the late Eocene. Diversifcation of Cylindraspis commenced in the mid-Oligocene, long before the formation of the Mascarene Islands. This rejects any notion suggesting that the group either arrived from nearby or distant continents over the course of the last millions of years or had even been translocated to the islands by humans. Instead, Cylindraspis likely originated on now submerged islands of the Réunion Hotspot and utilized these to island hop to reach the Mascarenes. The fnal diversifcation took place both before and after the arrival on the Mascarenes. With Cylindraspis a deeply divergent clade of tortoises became extinct that evolved long before the dodo or the Rodrigues solitaire, two other charismatic species of the lost Mascarene fauna. -

DESCRIPTION'S OF TWO NEW SPECIES OF TORTOISES FROM THE TERTIARY OF THE UNITED STATES. By O. P. Hat. The species first to be described was collected by Mr. Charles Schu- chert, assistant curator, division of stratigraphic paleontology, U. S. National Museum. The specimen was found in the Zeuglodon beds of the Jackson formation of the Eocene, in Choctaw County, Alabama, near Cocoa post-office, on land belonging to Mr. James Brown. In the immediate vicinity, Mr. Schuchert collected also a nearly complete skeleton of Basilosaurus [Zeuglodon), some bones of Dorudon, and ver- tebrae of the snake which has been described and figured by Mr. F. A. Lucas ^ as Pterosphenus schucherti. The turtle was found lying imbedded in the rock with the plastron downward. The upper portion of the carapace had been planed off by denudation down to the upper borders of the marginals. It is there- fore impossible to determine the character of the neural and costal bones and of the various superior epidermal scutes. The remainder of the shell was intact, or nearly so, when excavated; but, in spite of careful packing, it suffered much in shipment to the National Museum. However, notwithstanding its broken condition, it has, under the intel- hgent supervision of Mr. Lucas, the Curator of the Division of Com- parative Anatomy, been so skillfully restored that little is left to be desired, so far as the j)lastron and most of the marginals are con- cerned. To Mr. Lucas I am indebted for the opportunity to study and describe this interesting relic. I have assigned this species provisionally to the genus Hadrianus of Cope. -
