Special Feature: Asaf Sirkis and the Road to Shepherd's Stories (2013/04/08)
Special Feature: Asaf Sirkis And The Road To Shepherd's Stories (2013/04/08) Rainlore on premier drummer/percussionist Asaf Sirkis, his music, and his Asaf Sirkis Trio's latest album, Shepherd's Stories. Edited 2013/04/08 My first encounter with Asaf Sirkis happened, as it The 1990s then already saw Sirkis in great demand, and were, quite unconsciously, about 1993, in the form of getting the kind of press that could be the envy of many, an album by Israeli luminary and 'father' of Israeli free especially at such an early age. He was already jazz (some would say, free improvisation) Harold critically acclaimed as Israel's greatest drummer and Rubin, Trialog, which featured a young Asaf Sirkis on percussionist who ought not be confined to Israel alone drums and Kobi Shefi on bass guitar in addition to but deserving of much wider international recognition. Rubin himself on clarinet. Naturally enough, for a drummer and percussionist of his caliber, Israel eventually proved too small and Sirkis impressed me greatly back then, but, always Europe or America beckoned. having had a bad memory for names, the name Asaf Sirkis somehow soon faded from my memory. The first 1998 finally saw Sirkis leaving for first The class drumming, as well as the album, did not though, Netherlands and then France, before finally settling in and I was of course delighted to be reunited with it last London in 1999. Sirkis very quickly established himself year. It still stands out and is timeless, and I can only as a part of the UK Jazz and world music scene and recommend you get hold of it. -

Ever since I was a little boy I have been a fan, and some might even say that I became somewhat obsessed, for which I cannot really blame them. Moreover, I have always had a special interest in mixed language songs, so linking the two subjects seemed only natural. Thanks to a rather unfortunate turn of events, this thesis took a lot longer to write than was initially planned, but nevertheless, here it is. Special thanks are in order for my supervisor, Tony Foster, who has helped me in many ways during this time. I would also like to thank a number of other people for various reasons. The second reader Lettie Dorst. My mother, for being the reason I got involved with the Eurovision Song Contest. My father, for putting up with my seemingly endless collection of Eurovision MP3s in the car. -

The Jazz Mann | Asaf Sirkis Trio - Shepherd’s Stories | Review | The Jazz Mann Accessibility Menu Skip To Content Skip To Main Menu Home Reviews Artists Features News Gigs & Events Shop Contact Search: submit REVIEW Shepherd’s Stories Asaf Sirkis Trio Wednesday, July 24, 2013 Reviewed by: Ian Mann 4 out of 5 The new album is intentionally highly melodic with the trio's already remarkably rich sonic palette being expanded by judicious guest appearances. Asaf Sirkis Trio “Shepherd’s Stories” Since settling in London in 1999 Israeli born drummer, percussionist and composer Asaf Sirkis has become one of the most in demand musicians on the UK jazz scene. He first came to prominence as a member of Gilad Atzmon’s Orient House Ensemble before eventually leaving to concentrate on both solo projects and other commitments. Sirkis has toured and recorded with a wide variety of UK based musicians and is currently a member of trios led by pianists John Law and Alex Hutton, guitarist Maciek Pysz and the high profile Lighthouse trio alongside pianist Gwilym Simcock and reeds player Tim Garland. As a leader Sirkis made his bow with The Inner Noise, a trio that explored the sonic possibilities of the church organ within a jazz/rock context, the keyboards being handled by Steve Lodder and with powerful guitarist Mike Outram completing the group. The group’s third (and to date final) album “The Song Within” (2007) represented the zenith of their achievements and is reviewed elsewhere on this site. Since 2008 Sirkis has concentrated on his current trio featuring his compatriot Yaron Stavi on electric bass plus the Greek born guitarist Tassos Spiliotopoulos. -
JAZZ EDUCATION in ISRAEL by LEE CAPLAN a Thesis Submitted to The
JAZZ EDUCATION IN ISRAEL by LEE CAPLAN A Thesis submitted to the Graduate School-Newark Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Graduate Program in Jazz History and Research written under the direction of Dr. Henry Martin and approved by ___________________________________ ___________________________________ Newark, New Jersey May,2017 ©2017 Lee Caplan ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS JAZZ EDUCATION IN ISRAEL By LEE CAPLAN Thesis Director Dr. Henry Martin Jazz Education in Israel is indebted to three key figures – Zvi Keren, Arnie Lawrence, and Mel Keller. This thesis explores how Jazz developed in Israel and the role education played. Jazz Education in Israel discusses the origin of educational programs such as the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music (1985) and the New School Jazz Program (1986). One question that was imperative to this study was attempting to discover exactly how Jazz became a cultural import and export within Israel. Through interviews included in this thesis, this study uncovers just that. The interviews include figures such as Tal Ronen, Dr. Arnon Palty, Dr. Alona Sagee, and Keren Yair Dagan. As technology gets more advanced and the world gets smaller, Jazz finds itself playing a larger role in humanity as a whole. iii Preface The idea for this thesis came to me when I was traveling abroad during the summer of 2015. I was enjoying sightseeing throughout the streets of Ben Yehuda Jerusalem contemplating topics when all of a sudden I came across a jam session. I went over to listen to the music and was extremely surprised to find musicians from all parts of Europe coming together in a small Jazz venue in Israel playing bebop standards at break-neck speeds.
