Jewitt, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2014 Landscape painting assumed a new prominence in Venetian painting between the late fifteenth to early sixteenth century: this study aims to understand why and how this happened. It begins by redefining the conception of landscape in Renaissance Italy and then examines several ambitious easel paintings produced by major Venetian painters, beginning with Giovanni Bellini’s (c.1431- 36-1516) St. Francis in the Desert (c.1475), that give landscape a far more significant role than previously seen in comparable commissions by their peers, or even in their own work. After an introductory chapter reconsidering all previous hypotheses regarding Venetian painters’ reputations as accomplished landscape painters, it is divided into four chronologically arranged case study chapters.

  • Part II Repertoire
125 Part II Repertoire The following is a complete listing of repertoire performed by the orchestra and/or chorus, excluding staged opera performances, and chamber works or art songs performed on MCMA concerts. The list also excludes works performed on programs that did not include either the orchestra or chorus (e.g., works performed by guest choruses). In several “Pops” concerts of the 1960s-80s, the guest artist’s featured works were listed only as “selections” and announced from the stage. It has been impossible to reconstruct some of these programs, so a certain amount of that repertoire has been lost. The repertoire list is organized by composer and cued to the dates of performance. Where possible, arrangers are listed, and cross-referenced to the composers of individual works. Most dates listed represent regular subscription or free concerts from the MCMA or MSO season. The following codes are appended to the date when the work appeared on a non-subscription concert: c = choral programs p = pops programs (1960- ) y = youth concerts (including “Young Peoples’ Concerts, “Fall Youth Concerts,” “Symphony Soup,” and other programs aimed at a young audience (1930- ) f = family neighborhood concerts (1970s) and family concerts (1990s) g = annual Concert on the Green (1996- ) r = runout concerts (outside of Madison) bb = “brown bag” concerts (mid 1970s) s = other special programs (hired concerts, festival programs, etc.) Ade Twentiana / 5/1/93(p) Abert orchestration of “Prelude, Chorale, and Fugue” - Ades see Bach arrangement “Symphonic Portrait of Irving Berlin” - see Berlin Accolay Concerto No.1 for Violin and Orchestra / Albeniz 10/17/89(y) Iberia (“Triana”) / 11/2/52 Jota Aragonesa (orch.

  • About the Music by Dr
April 14-15, 2018 — page 1 About the Music by DR. RICHARD E. RODDA Three Dance Episodes from On the Town (1944) — Leonard Bernstein Born August 25, 1918 in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Died October 14, 1990 in New York City. In April 1944, Bernstein’s ballet Fancy Free was introduced to great acclaim at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. The plot, according to the composer, concerned three sailors “on leave [in New York] and on the prowl for girls. The tale tells of how they meet first one, then a second girl, and how they fight over them, lose them, and in the end take off with still a third.” The ballet’s setting and characters were the inspiration for him to try a new piece in a form that he had not then broached — musical comedy. Soon after Fancy Free had been launched, he enlisted two old friends, the singer-dancer-lyricist Adolph Green (“old” is relative — Bernstein was not yet 26, but he had known Green since they were teenagers) and Green’s creative collaborator, Betty Comden, to write the book and words for the show, which they titled On the Town. They devised a story, perfectly suited to those war years, about three sailors in New York who are determined to see everything in the city during their 24-hour leave. On the subway, one of the sailors falls in love with the poster picture of Miss Turnstiles and the boys set out to find her. Their efforts take them all over the city until they finally discover Miss Turnstiles in Coney Island, where they learn that she is not the glamorous girl they expected from the poster, but a belly dancer.

RICHARD E. RODDA Suite Italienne Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) Composed in 1932. Late in 1930, Willy Strecker, co-owner and director of the prestigious German publishing house of Schott, suggested to Igor Stravinsky that a violin concerto might make a welcome addition to the catalog of his music, and told the composer that the violinist Samuel Dushkin was willing to offer technical advice for the project. Stravinsky was, however, somewhat reluctant to accept the proposal because of his lack of confidence in writing for the violin as a solo instrument and his concern that Dushkin might be one of those performers interested only in “immediate triumphs ... [through] special effects, whose preoccupation naturally influences their taste, their choice of music, and their manner of treating the piece selected.” He agreed to meet the young violinist, however, and their first encounter proved to be warm and friendly.
