SAINT ANTHONY GREEK DANCERS

S E T LI S T 1 Hasaposerviko - This dance, performed by our little group, is based off of the Hasapiko dance that originated in Constantinople during the Middle Ages, but this version from Northern Greece has Serbian influence and is faster.

Gaida – This dance from the Macedonia region is named after the instrument “Gaida,” a goatskin bagpipe used in Southeastern Europe. You will hear its distinctive sound in our music!

Soufliotouda – A fast-paced dance of Thrace. You will notice how our female dancers hold our hands in a “basket” and dance close together. Our choreography exaggerates line movements.

Diplos Horos – This translates literally to “double dance.” You will notice our dancers split into two parallel lines while executing their steps.

Pyrgousikos – From a small island called, Chios, this is a village dance from Pyrgi. An interpretation of this dance is the abduction of a soon-to-be bride who dances in the middle of a trio. The lead male is the future groom and the last dancer is the friend who offers him assistance.

Kalamatianos – The national dance of Greece! 10 steps and easy to learn, come up and join us!

S E T LI S T 2 Tsamiko – This popular folk dance highlights simple but precise steps that emphasize the beat of the music. Some of our male dancers will be adding their own style and acrobatics at the

front of the line.

Karagouna – This dance from Thessaly is performed by our female dancers. It is one of the most well-known folk dances in Greece and is traditionally a courting dance.

Zonaradiko – From the region of Thrace, this is a popular village dance with many variations. As the dance nears the end, the first dancer moves to the center and the other dancers spiral around him.

Kalamatianos – The national dance of Greece! 10 steps and easy to learn, come up and join us!

S E T LI S T 3 Hasaposerviko – A traditional dance as mentioned in Set List 1, but with a modern and international flare.

Zorba – We’ve taken choreography from the dance in the movie, “Zorba the Greek” (1964). You will recognize the music as soon as you hear it!

Ikariotikos – We dance a modern version of this dance from the island of Ikaria which highlights freestyle variations that you would see if you visited the island today.

Pentozali – Coming from the Greek word Pente “five” and Cretan Greek word Zalos “step,” we mix contemporary music with the traditional steps from Crete. Traditionally a male dance, we include our female dancers in this modern version.
