Amen. WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF THIS COLLECT? This collect, found in the first Book of Common Prayer, derives from a little sacramentary of votive Masses for the private devotion of priests prepared by Alcuin of York (c.735-804), a major contributor to the Carolingian Renaissance. It is similar to proper prefaces found in the 8th-century Gelasian and 10th- century Gregorian Sacramentaries. Gelasian Sacramentary WHAT IS TRINITY SUNDAY? Trinity Sunday is the first Sunday after Pentecost in the Western Christian liturgical calendar, and Pentecost Sunday in Eastern Christianity. It is eight weeks after Easter Sunday. The earliest possible date is 17 May and the latest possible date is 20 June. In 2021 it occurs on 30 May. De Simone 2012 Abstract In the mid-seventeenth century Nikon, Patriarch of Moscow, introduced a number of reforms to bring the Russian Orthodox Church into ritualistic and liturgical conformity with the Greek Orthodox Church. However, Nikon‘s reforms met staunch resistance from a number of clergy, led by figures such as the archpriest Avvakum and Bishop Pavel of Kolomna, as well as large portions of the general Russian population. Nikon‘s critics rejected the reforms on two key principles: that conformity with the Greek Church corrupted Russian Orthodoxy‘s spiritual purity and negated Russia‘s historical and Christian destiny as the Third Rome – the final capital of all Christendom before the End Times. Developed in the early sixteenth century, what became the Third Rome Doctrine proclaimed that Muscovite Russia inherited the political and spiritual legacy of the Roman Empire as passed from Constantinople. In the mind of Nikon‘s critics, the Doctrine proclaimed that Constantinople fell in 1453 due to God‘s displeasure with the Greeks. Therefore, to Nikon‘s critics introducing Greek rituals and liturgical reform was to invite the same heresies that led to the Greeks‘ downfall. -

Christianity came to Russia in 988 when the ruler of Kiev, Prince Vladimir, converted. -

The Great Church of Constantinople: History, Architecture and Liturgical Challenges Presentation at the New Skete Monastery, August 13, 2006 This presentation is a humble offering to the communities of New Skete and to all who have gathered here. Today 40 years of Christian witness are being remembered. The lives of both the living and departed have brought us together. Lives immersed in prayer, work and study have witnessed and now witness to the need for all to be one with God and each other. I: History The basilica of Hagia Sophia built by emperor Justinian (527-65) follows two earlier structures of the same name located more or less on the same site. The first was completed and dedicated in 360 during the reign of Constantius. This church was greatly damaged by a fire most likely caused by arsonists protesting the banishment of St. John Chrysostom in 404. The second Hagia Sophia built under emperor Theodosius II is rededicated in 415. This church building was again severely damaged by another fire during the NIKA riot of January 532.[1] Leading up to the riot were political i.e. dynastic, religious and social conflicts. During this time there were two rival factions each loyal to its own Christology. These factions also competed with each other in the events of the hippodrome and were known by their respective colors. Thus, those faithful to the Council of Chalcedon (451) were the Blues and those opposed to Chalcedon were known as the Greens. For a brief time Blues and Greens banned together forming a political bloc to oppose Justinian. -

In his formal plan for the Institution, Joseph Henry outlined a program that included the following statement: "It is proposed to publish a series of reports, giving an account of the new discoveries in science, and of the changes made from year to year in all branches of knowledge." Papers or monographs submitted for series publication are received by the Smithsonian Institution Press, subject to its own review for format and style, only through departments of the various Smithsonian museums or bureaux, where tfie manuscripts are given substantive review.
