Todos los trabajos han sido revisados por los profesores del Comité Científico del Congreso y esperamos que las correcciones hayan sido de utilidad a los autores. Ya sólo queda “la puesta en escena” con la exposición y los nervios de hablar en público. Se dice que “no hay temas aburridos, sino oradores poco entusiastas”. Sabemos que nuestros estudiantes, si se han lanzado a presentar su trabajo en este Congreso, es porque entusiasmo no les falta, y los organizadores del Congreso vamos a hacer todo lo posible para que no decaiga. No obstante, como en cualquier otro evento de este tipo, tenemos un tiempo limitado y esperamos que los ponentes controlen su entusiasmo y sepan respetarlo. -
Biological Surveys at Hunsbury Hill Country Park 2018
FRIENDS OF WEST HUNSBURY PARKS BIOLOGICAL SURVEYS AT HUNSBURY HILL COUNTRY PARK 2018 Ryan Clark Northamptonshire Biodiversity Records Centre April 2019 Northamptonshire Biodiversity Records Centre Introduction Biological records tell us which species are present on sites and are essential in informing the conservation and management of wildlife. In 2018, the Northamptonshire Biodiversity Records Centre ran a number of events to encourage biological recording at Hunsbury Hill Fort as part of the Friends of West Hunsbury Park’s project, which is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Hunsbury Hill Country Park is designated as a Local Wildlife Site (LWS). There are approximately 700 Local Wildlife Sites in Northamptonshire. Local Wildlife Sites create a network of areas, which are important as refuges for wildlife or wildlife corridors. Hunsbury Hill Country Park was designated as a LWS in 1992 for its woodland flora and the variety of habitats that the site possesses. The site also has a Local Geological Site (LGS) which highlights the importance of this site for its geology as well as biodiversity. This will be surveyed by the local geological group in due course. Hunsbury Hill Country Park Local Wildlife Site Boundary 1 Northamptonshire Biodiversity Records Centre (NBRC) supports the recording, curation and sharing of quality verified environmental information for sound decision-making. We hold nearly a million biological records covering a variety of different species groups. Before the start of this project, we looked to see which species had been recorded at the site. We were surprised to find that the only records we have for the site have come from Local Wildlife Site Surveys, which assess the quality of the site and focus on vascular plants, with some casual observations of other species noted too. -

Silva Filho Thomas Mitchell Fernando Consoli Copyright by Julio Cesar Fatoretto 2017 Abstract Transgenic plants containing genes from Bacillus thuringiensis have been used as an alternative to chemical insecticides for insect pest control. The vegetative insecticidal proteins (Vip) secreted during the vegetative growth phase of bacteria are considered a second generation of insecticidal proteins since they do not share any structural or sequence homology with previously used crystal proteins (Cry) as well as having a wide insecticidal spectrum. One of the target pests for this protein is the fall armyworm (FAW) (Spodoptera frugiperda), the most important corn pest in South America. Previously it has been controlled by insecticides and corn expressing Cry proteins, but has rapidly evolved resistance to many control practices and remains a top concern for sustainable biotechnology control efforts. Thus, resistance characterization involving mode of action and genetics of resistance can help with Insect Resistance Management strategies, and improve the durability of control. In this dissertation, using selected FAW population resistant to Vip3Aa20 Bt protein (Vip-R1and Vip-R2) we generated comparative proteomic and transcriptomic data among resistant and susceptible colonies. In the chapter 2, we bring FAW biology/ecology and Brazilian agriculture landscape data to support the high adaptive potential of this pest to genetically modified corn expressing Bt Cry proteins in Brazil. -

Type of Pest Caterpillar Taxonomic Position Class: Insecta, Order: Lepidoptera, Family: Yponomeutidae Reason for Inclusion 2012 CAPS Additional Pests of Concern Pest Description Eggs: “The individual egg has the appearance of a flattened, yellow, soft disc with the centre area slightly raised, and marked with longitudinal ribbings. Ten to eighty eggs are deposited in overlapping rows to form a flattened, slightly convex, oval egg mass. At the time of deposition, the egg mass is covered with a glutinous substance, which on exposure to air forms a resistant, protective coating. This coating not only acts as an egg-shield but provides an ideal overwintering site for the diapausing first-instar larvae. The egg mass is yellow at first but then darkens until eventually it is grey-brown and resembles the bark of apple twigs. Egg masses average 3-10 mm [0.12-0.39 in] in length and 4 mm [0.16 in] in width but vary considerably in size and shape” (CFIA, 2006). Larvae: “Grey, yellowish-grey, greenish-brown, and greyish-green larvae have been reported. The mature larva is approximately 15-20 mm [0.59-0.79 in] in length; the anterior and posterior extremities are much narrower than the remainder of the body. There are 2 conspicuous laterodorsal black dots on each segment from the mesothorax to the 8th abdominal segment. -

Thus, it is particularly important to develop alternative strategies to control this pest. Over a 4-year period, a survey was done in order to acquire knowledge about the complex of parasitoids associated with this pest. Leaves, flowers, and fruit infested with larvae and pupae of P. oleae were collected from olive groves, conditioned in vials, and kept under laboratory conditions until the emergence of P. ol e ae adults or parasitoids. The abundance and richness of parasitoids as well as the rate of parasitism was estimated. Hymenoptera parasitoids were found to be responsible for 43% of the mean mortality of the sampled individuals. -

Bioassays were carried out to examine differences in the feeding of a folivorous weevil, Stereonychus fraxini De Geer, on leaves from ash saplings with undamaged roots, and those with damaged roots. Beetles ate significantly more of the leaves of root-damaged saplings in a choice experiment. 2. A separate study of the effect of root damage on leaf toughness was carried out on a second group of ash saplings. Saplings with damaged roots had less tough leaves than control saplings. Decreased leaf toughness in hypothesized as a mechanism to explain the preference of weevils for leaves from damaged trees. 3. Both chemical and physical changes may occur in the tissues of ash trees in response to environmental stress such as drought and root damage. 4. Root damage caused by agricultural disturbance is hypothesized as a mechanism making mature ash trees in hedgerow ecosystems more susceptible to insect herbivores. Key words. Many parts of the earth have not yet received due attention regarding insects, animals which have a much more important impact on our habitats than perhaps most people may think. Not only do various insects eat our growing crops and affect our decorative plants in our gardens, they also are vectors for more or less dangerous diseases. On the other hand they contribute to degradation of biological material, serve as pollinators, constitute food for humans and other animals, and maybe also give us opportunity to develop new medicines or other useful substances. -
