President’s Report

So the 2016/2017 season has come to an end, and what a fantastic season it was! This club goes from strength to strength, finishing the year with the Mighty U11s winning the Grand Final for the second year in a row, the U13s losing the Grand Final by the hands of the Gods with not a ball bowled in anger!, the U12s bowing out in the Final as did the U10s - an outstanding Club effort by all teams. The club certainly has a pool of talent to take us forward for years to come. I would like to congratulate Paul and Kelli Forrester, Steve Burke and the Under 11 team for your success in going all the way again and taking out the spoils. To watch your side play is a joy and brings a lot of pride to the club. Uncle Ray Evans and his Under 13 team had to painfully turn up both Saturday and Sunday of the Grand Final in the rain only to be denied getting on the park due to the poor state of the field, and finishing second. We will never know what could have been! Andrew Divan and the Under 12 team came up against a team in too good form to overcome and fell just one game short of the big dance. Also to my Under 10 side who, in your first competitive year, made it through to the final and, despite playing your hearts out, were just out played in the end. However, you can all hold your heads up. Well done to ALL coaches, Managers and players from B Grade right through to our champion Minis who turned up giving it your all, but most importantly, loving cricket and playing with mates. Our success didn’t just come from teams making it through to the finals series, it came from our abundance of representative players as well. All our players featured very well in these sides and a big congratulations to you all. U10 Foster Shield – Luca Croft. James Rose, Matthew Fitzgerald, Max Zanbaka, Kristian Zanbaka, Lachie Burke, Patrick Forrester and Harrison Divan U11 Creak Shield – Joshua Trevitt, Daniel Louka, Tom Forrester and Cooper Sutton U12 Cawsey Shield – Ethan Nennas U13 Gee Shield – Mahsen Narvel and James Apostolakis U14 Moore Shield – Ethan Burke and Alex Passarelli U15 Peden and U17 Brewer Shield – Hanan Narvel. Also, congratulations to Mahsen Narvel who has been selected in the Cricket NSW U14 Boys Metro squad for the 2017-18 season. Our annual fund raiser, the Bunnings BBQ, was again a massive success with plenty of help from all teams which made light work of a long day, which always has lots of fun and team banter. Again, I thank everyone for their help. Our social events this year were the Jack Jarrett Shield, including the President vs Secretary Trophy (which is becoming a farce), and a “Back to the 80s” night. The Jack Jarrett Shield was even bigger and better than last year with more teams, more frills and spills, more sledging, more sausages and beers and an inaugural WAGS team who crushed some of the male sides. They may not have won the trophy, but were awarded the sexiest team! The Secretary’s Team beat the President’s Team (they just find new dodgy rules every year) and retained the trophy. Although a fun day, it is named in honour of Jack, a former player, and played in the spirit that the Jarrett family played with in the club. Thank you, Dave, for officiating and awarding the shield to the winning team and I hope you enjoyed the event. Our “Back to the 80s” night wasn’t quite the success we were hoping for, however, what it lacked in numbers, was made up for in absolute mayhem! We had Cindy Laupers, Madonnas, a Drag Queen (I think), Dallas Donnelly, Michael Jackson back from the dead and 2 Mavericks, or Maverick and Goose, or just 2 Goose’s. The jury is out on that one!! A fun night had by all that attended, not so fun on Sunday or for the courtesy bus driver that had to take Priscilla home last!

______St. Christopher’s Cricket Club 4 Season 2016-17

I would like to thank our beloved secretary Andrew Divan for your tireless work keeping the club running smoothly and efficiently, your BDCA commitments and your organising of the Jack Jarrett shield. It is certainly much appreciated by myself, and all involved in the club. Paul Collins, for jumping in my chair when indisposed and also being a BDCA delegate (that should be a paid job). Also for a great job in getting our club jackets sorted - I think everyone would agree that they look fantastic. Albert (Priscilla) Abela for assisting AD with secretarial stuff, the colourful meeting minutes and heated rule change proposals. Brett (more gear than Kingsgrove Sports) Court for your ball handling skills and storage facilities. A true Clubman. John Grealy, only JG enjoys figures this much! They just keep going up and up!! It’s a pleasure to have you around with your own insight of the game. And last, but by no means least, Peter Goodrick who is the telco of the club, and even retired to spend more time doing our Facebook, newsletters, emails, photos, stats and ideas. I don’t believe there is a more informed club in the universe ! I would also like to take the opportunity to thank all parents and players who choose to call Saints their club! So, if you think I have said way too many thank yous, it’s because without all your help the club would not be what it is today. Thank you. Until next season.

Yours in Sport John Clay President

Saints Cricket Registration Days Each season a lot of work goes into the player registration period. We get out to all schools in the district, and even on social media, firstly looking to get people interested in cricket and then to register with Saints Cricket. This season was especially busy as we became the first club in the BDCA to also take online registrations using the Cricket NSW ‘Play Cricket’ website. We look forward to making several improvements in time for next season and still be the leader amongst BDCA clubs ! The best way to generate interest and attract new players is through word-of-mouth. So don’t be shy in letting people know that Saints Cricket is the best club to register with in the BDCA !

------

Welcome Sausage Sizzle We love to welcome our new players and families, as well as our returning families, with an early-season sausage sizzle down at Panania Diggers. This is a great way to meet your new team mates and families in a social environment. Thank you to all the families that came down to our Sausage Sizzle on Saturday 22 October. It was especially pleasing to see so many of our new families attend. We like to think that we are a great family club and are always keen to get our families involved in our club functions. Special thanks also to Panania Diggers for their support of this event.

______St. Christopher’s Cricket Club 8 Season 2016-17

Pink Stumps Day The McGrath Foundation is a fantastic cause and Saints Cricket is very proud to have been raising much needed funds through our involvement with Pink Stumps Day since it was introduced in 2011. A big thanks to John, Dave and their mighty Under 10s for hosting the event on Saturday 18 February. It was great to see so many supporters get into the pink spirit. We were able to sell a lot of our pink merchandise and many people also donated generously. Also a special thanks to Michael Sleiman from Daystar First National Real Estate. Michael has been our major sponsor for several seasons and kindly donated $1,000 on the day.

------

Bunnings BBQ One of our most enjoyable events each season is running a fundraising BBQ at Bunnings Bankstown Airport and we did it again on Sunday 30 October. It is an important fundraising event for the club and helps us to purchase cricket gear for the club, get our teams on the field each week and keep our rego fees as low as possible. This year we raised a record amount after some shrewd purchasing by the organising crew ! A lot of hard work goes into organising the day and we can only do it with the support of volunteers throughout the day from our different teams. Thanks to all our club members that gave up their time to help on the day. It really is a fun day and we hope to see even more volunteers next season.

______St. Christopher’s Cricket Club 9 Season 2016-17

Club Junior Coaching Clinic Last season’s coaching clinic was a big success and helped improve the cricket skills within the club and also helped to develop more camaraderie and club spirit ! This season we held another club coaching clinic on Wednesday 17 November and we were very fortunate to secure the services of Len Pascoe, Australian and Bankstown cricket legend, to be our guest coach on the day. Len was willing to spend a lot of time helping the kids with their skills and importantly talking about the benefits of hard work at training translating to improved performances on game day. It was a great opportunity to get all our coaches involved and a big thank you to all the coaches and parents that helped on the day. Sometimes the kids seem to respond to a ‘new’ coach – even if they are getting the same message! It was hard work on the day, but a lot of fun as well. Hopefully we will be able to organise a similar clinic next season to further develop the skills within the club.

Super 8s Tournament - Jack Jarrett Shield After the success of the Super 8s last year, we couldn’t wait to start this season’s tournament. The number of teams quickly filled up and we eventually fielded more teams than last season. There were some dubious recruitment practices in the lead-up with plenty of brown paper bags being exchanged in the car park on the day. Most of it was clearly wasted ! We saw teams like the ladies ‘Bowled & the Beautiful’, the young ‘Tradies Get the Ladies’ and the eventual winners, Clint Gaughan’s ‘ For Answers’ take to the field. As well as the record number of players, we also had a large spectator group, cheering (or was it sledging?) the individual players and teams. The BBQ and drinks kept everyone fed and watered and the weather was kind to us after a long spell of terrible playing conditions. The trophy is named after our former Junior player, Jack Jarrett, who sadly passed away aged 17. It was great to see Dave Jarrett, Jack’s dad and former club committeeman, down there on the day to present the trophy. Already looking forward to next year’s tournament !!

______St. Christopher’s Cricket Club 11 Season 2016-17

Annual President’s vs Secretary’s Match The President’s vs Secretary’s Match this season was again played as part of the Super 8s tournament. We have tried many different formats, player selection processes, pep talks, bribery etc……but the President still can’t take a trick. The trophy was raised by our Secretary after another very competitive match played by our talented junior players. Congratulations to the kids on a great match……and commiserations to our President……AGAIN !

------

Club Jackets You may have noticed that a lot of parents, supporters and players are now decked out in our new club jacket…..and how good do they look ! The jacket is made from a high quality, lightweight material and is perfect to wear in the mornings at matches, at club events or even socially. It really makes us stand out from other clubs ! We will have some jackets ready again for the start of next season but you should get your orders in as soon as possible. Orders can be sent to [email protected] Big thanks to Paul Collins for co-ordinating design and orders (and as a smouldering jacket model !) and to Michael Sleiman, from Daystar First National, for sponsoring.

’Back to the 80s’ Night This year a brave group of parents and supporters donned their 80s gear at our ‘Back to the 80s’ night, held at Panania Diggers on Saturday 25 February. These events are planned as a night when our parents and supporters can leave the kids at home and just get out, have a good time and get involved in the well-known Saints Cricket family spirit. The DJ kept pumping out the 80s hits as people who looked remarkably like Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Maverick and Goose and even Michael Jackson took to the dance floor. Making sure that things didn’t get out of hand was someone looking (a bit?) like Dallas Donnelly ! A great night, with plenty of laughs, was had by all that attended. These are important events for the club so, if you couldn’t make it this time, we look forward to seeing you at our future club events. A big thanks to all that helped with the organisation of the night.

MILO IN2CRICKET

Saints Cricket registers as a MILO in2CRICKET centre each season as it is a great way to introduce kids to the joys of cricket as well introduce new players to our club. MILO Cricket is designed to introduce young kids to the game of cricket in a fun and safe environment while developing their skills at the same time. MILO in2Cricket players have an opportunity to participate in the Sydney Test match as well as in events run by NSW Cricket. This season we welcomed Vrishank Ganji, Ayden Aslam, Leo Karanfilovski, Lauchlan Smith, Kyaan Gilani, Murad Gilani & Christopher Chhabra to our program and we hope to see all the boys come back to play with Saints Cricket again next season. If you are aware of any kids that just want to come down and try cricket, we will be running MILO in2Cricket again next season.

MINIS - DIVISION 1 (BENNETTS)

Front Row L-R - Patrick Passarelli, Dylan Grace, Zachariah Eid, Isaac Deguara, Hugh Bennetts

Coach - Gary Bennetts

We started the season a bit low on numbers, with just 4 players making up the team. But it didn’t really matter given the keenness of Dylan, Isaac, Hugh and Patrick to be involved in everything that was happening. From game one, all the boys were enthusiastic and willing to learn. In round 7 we welcomed Zach into the team. He came up from MILO cricket and slotted straight in. ENTHUSIASM was the big thing I saw in the team this year. They put everything into every game and into every training session too. They learned from the things we did at training and we saw massive improvements over the Christmas break, especially in bowling. It’s obvious there was some good training happening in the break! Our team benefitted from a great bunch of parents. I am very thankful for them, their attitude to the games, their commitment to bringing the boys to training and their friendly willingness to help out. Very grateful too for all the efforts of the Saints committee – John, Andrew and all the other coaches and people who make Saints the club it is. See you next season!

Meet the Players

Dylan Grace Dylan embodied the enthusiasm of the team as much as any other player. Dylan was always keen to be in the action, whether batting or bowling. Dylan has a natural eye and hit some really big shots when batting. Because we were short on players, most boys batted twice each week. In round 4 Dylan racked up a total of 37 runs! Dylan also is a natural bowler and was very effective this season (especially when not trying to bowl too fast!). He was a real asset to the team and I’m sure will go on to play the game he loves for a long time to come.

Isaac Deguara Isaac is a natural and excelled this year, especially in bowling. He showed great control of the ball and kept it on the pitch really well. As keen at training as he was in the games, Isaac was always on task and focused. After the Christmas break Isaac’s bowling came on in leaps and bounds. This showed his dedication to improving and his overall great attitude. Isaac had a top score of 18 runs with the bat. It will be great to see Isaac develop into a very skilled cricketer in the seasons ahead.

Hugh Bennetts Hughie has a great eye and was our sharp-shooter run out specialist this season. He hit the stumps a number of times during the season and with a strong throw that caught quite a few batters short of their ground. Hugh also took one of the only catches I saw all season. He is working on his bowling with some good improvement made over the course of the season. Also very handy with the bat, he hit a number of big 4s.

Patrick Passarelli Patrick showed great energy and skill throughout the season. When batting, Patrick was always on the lookout for the sneaky single and his speed between kept the score ticking over. His highest score for the season was a great 14. Like Hugh, bowling is improving, especially working on keeping the arm straight. But with his skill level, and love of the game, it is clear that Pat has many years to get that sorted out. Well played!

Zachariah Eid The David Warner of the team, big-hitting Zach landed some mighty blows in the half season he played with us after moving from the MILO ranks. Zach knocked up 24 runs in his final innings of the season. Though a late arrival in the season, Zach fitted in perfectly with the other boys. Zach clearly enjoys putting in some practise in the backyard with his Dad, so it will be great to see Zach develop over the next few seasons. Great work Zach!

MINIS - DIVISION 1 (GAUGHAN)

Front Row L-R - Marcus Hammoud, Jack Macan, James Mitchell, Ava Gaughan, Curtis Marsh Absent - Tanush Chauhan

Coach - Clint Gaughan Manager - Annmarie Gaughan

What a great year of cricket it has been. All the kids were keen to learn, which made training an enjoyable time and showed when it came to game time. The kids all improved throughout the season with everyone scoring runs and taking wickets. Even though Minis isn’t competitive, you could not tell the kids that they won all games bar one. Well done guys!! It has been a pleasure to coach such a great group of kids. A very big thank you to all the parents who helped score and coach throughout the season - your support was very much appreciated.

Meet the Players

Jack Macan Jack is a stylish left hand batsman that hits the ball very hard. Jack showed a willingness to listen and learn during the year. Jack also took a number of wickets with his leg spinners. Our leading run scorer – great year mate!

Marcus Hammoud Marcus had a great season with both bat and ball. He is also a great fieldsman, saving us a lot of runs with his speed and athleticism. Well done Cookie!

James Mitchell This was James’ first year of cricket and he showed great commitment all year, developing all the time. Both James’ batting and bowling improved out of sight. Well done mate!

Tanush Chauhan Tanush is another hard-hitting lefty who could take any attack apart. Tanush worked hard on his bowling every week, getting us some handy wickets throughout the season. Job well done!

Curtis Marsh This was Curtis’ first year of cricket and he showed great development throughout the season, both with the bat and ball. Who could forget his “Dab” when he took his first . Super effort mate!

Ava Gaughan Ava is a great all-rounder who was our leading wicket taker and scored plenty of runs. Ava absolutely loves training and playing the game of cricket and will have a bright future if she keeps it up. Great season Ava!

Watch closely guys…….this is how I won the Super 8s tournament !

MINIS - DIVISION 2 (RUSSELL)

Front Row L-R - Darrell Le, Jake Cutting, Jayden Sowerby, Brandon DeMarchi Absent - Oliver Trevitt, Rehan Anwar, Alex Weightman

Coach - Kerry Russell Manager - Kylee Trevitt

It was the first season for a lot of the boys, and what a season it was! Supported by a few seasoned players from last year, the rookies settled in and by the end of the season they were all playing some great cricket. As a new coach entering this season I didn’t know what to expect. But I thoroughly enjoyed the season, watching the boys approach each game and training session with enthusiasm, having fun along the way, and improving a little each and every week. The boys gelled well together in our new team, forming new friendships and cementing existing friendships. They are a great bunch of kids and I was very proud of them and the way they conducted themselves, above all supporting and encouraging each other each week in a positive manner despite a few disappointments along the way. A big thanks from me to all of the team parents. Your support and commitment each and every week, and your polite and respectful kids, made this a great season. There were weeks we outnumbered the opposition 2 to 1 demonstrating our parent’s dedication. A special thanks to team manager Kylee Trevitt who patiently deciphered my team sheet, scored weekly and helped me count to 6 or 5. I thank all of the boys and parents for making this season a special one. I hope to see you and your wonderful boys all back again next season.

Meet the Players

Rehan Anwar Rehan wasn’t always able to attend games and training but, when he was able, he was always energetic and keen to get on the field and play with his new friends. With a friendly smile, Rehan was always ready with his bat in hand when I said who wants to bat! Hope to see you again next year Rehan. Jake Cutting It was the first season of cricket for Jake. But with older brothers already playing, and being the coach’s son, the expectations were high. With his speedy bowling, ability to spot a quick run and take it, and wild swinging of the bat he didn’t disappoint. Most of all, he just had fun and made some new friends which is what it’s all about. But stop arguing with the coach Jake! ☺ Brandon DeMarchi Always ready to take a big swing with his big bat, Brandon had a great season making some solid runs to be one of our regular batting achievers. Quiet, respectful and enthusiastic Brandon was a pleasure to have on the team. In the field he was engaged and alert, and during the season his bowling improved immensely, with some great deliveries keeping the opposition on their toes towards the end of the season. Fantastic effort Brandon! Darrell Le Darrell was another of our quiet achievers this season. Again, quiet and respectful, Darrell’s actions on the field demonstrated his experience from past seasons. Darrell approached bowling, batting and fielding with enthusiasm, focus and energy. When others had lost interest in the field, squashing marker cones for entertainment, Darrell would remain focused, charging after the ball and firing it back at the stumps with pace and precision. Well done Darrell! Jayden Sowerby Jayden must have enjoyed the season as he was always smiling! At training, when bowling, batting and fielding Jayden always had a friendly smile for his team and coach. Jayden is a handy batsman, and was always trying to do his best, listening carefully and trying different techniques to improve his bowling. Thanks for always trying and always smiling Jayden! Oliver Trevitt Oliver was half of our pocket rocket duo! Along with his best mate Alexander he was always ready to run and, when put into bat, he made the most of this between the wickets. Very handy with the bat, Oliver would knock them around the park and sprint to the other end making plenty of runs over the season, and having a lot of fun along the way. Keep up the good work Oliver! Alexander Weightman Alexander is the other half of our pocket rocket duo. Being the first season for Alexander he started off lacking confidence in his abilities but with some encouragement, and the support of his best mate Oliver, he was playing some great cricket by end of season. A good all-rounder, Alexander will only improve with time. Keep at it Alexander!

What a year it was with four of last year’s team and the recruitment of three new players. Every week the kids showed up with great attitudes and were always keen to play which made it very easy to coach them. They all gelled well together which showed with some really great performances on the field by all players and that made it a very successful year. I would like to thank all parents for making it easy to coach the side especially Cameron and the two Jims for all the help they gave me throughout the year. I hope to see the kids again next year for another great year.

Meet the Players

Paige Wise Paige he been playing Minis for a couple of years now and is committed to her team. She is always at training and the games. Paige is quite accurate with the ball and now, being the only girl in her team, doesn't bother her one bit. She is always the first one there if someone is injured to see if they are OK, and has great team sportsmanship (sportspersonship !).

Kostas Saisanas Kostas is a very athletic energetic kid, never misses a training session and turns up to every game….always gives 100% and never complains. He also filled in for other sides if needed. He will be a great asset to any Under 9s team with his strong arm and good eye to hit the ball.

Dexter Phelps Dex is a budding young sporting superstar who has a good eye for the ball and a strong arm for a young bloke. He is a keen cricketer who I see playing for years and being better than his father. Good work Dex.

Campbell Whitney Cam is only new to the team this year and he fitted in perfectly. He seems to love the game and is a keen batter and is very active in the field. Keep up the good work Cam.

Jaxon Wise Jax is our youngest player at only 3 years old, is not scared of the ball and is willing to have a go at anything, but especially loves batting with "his bat". Bigger and better next year Jax.

Lachlan Wise Lachlan has come into his own with the bat with a good eye - he doesn’t miss many. Lachie loves to field, especially as he can produce run outs at will. Lachie loves playing and will definitely be back next year. Keep up the good work Lachie.

Michael Psirakis After missing the first few games with an arm injury, Michael came back determined to make an impact and that he did. With his super strong arm, his bowling was on target and whacking the ball to all parts of the ground, Michael left his mark. Keep up the good work Michael.

mmmm….I can never remember….are they 6-ball overs, or only 5, in Minis? ______St. Christopher’s Cricket Club 22 Season 2016-17

Congratulations on another successful season for all involved at St Christopher’s Cricket Club. Our Under 9s had a great season. Having a bye every third week made it hard to gain momentum, however the boys performed consistently well with many promising young cricketers honing their skills and enjoying the game. Their enthusiasm and attitude made coaching a pleasure. It was great to watch them enjoy the game and improve over the season. There are many people involved that I need to thank, sorry if I miss anyone. Obviously, all the people involved in running our great club, John Clay, Paul Collins, Andrew Divan, John Grealy and Peter Goodrick. Joel’s mum Karen Abela for managing our Under 9s team without whom I don’t think I could have managed. Thomas Clark’s mum, Linda, for doing a great job scoring for the majority of the season and all the other parents that helped with umpiring, scoring and training….Thank you !

Casch Tuckett A great little cricketer with a great attitude. He has taken to the role of wicket keeper and did a great job for the team throughout the season.

Edward Worger A great team player. Edward made some great improvements on last season.

______St. Christopher’s Cricket Club 23 Season 2016-17

Joel Abela Joel is also a great team player who improved throughout the season.

Nicholas Kladis Made some great improvements from last season and Nicholas excelled in the field.

Nicholas Passarelli It was great to have Nick back in the team again. A great listener and cricketer.

Nawfel Rashid Loves the game and it shows. Nawfel is a great little cricketer.

Owais Bin Hawel Owais had a great season and consistently performed with bat, ball and in the field.

Sadeem & Daniyal Ahmed These two brothers played well all season whether it be against the opposition or against each other ! They both love the game and the hours spent playing together have helped them both become quite skilful young cricketers. Very thankful for Sadeem always being willing to swap sides if the other team was short to ensure everyone got a game.

Scott Beattie Talented and skilled. Scott excelled throughout the season.

Thomas Budge Another talented young player with the bat and ball. This was Thomas’ second season with me and he keeps improving all the time.

Thomas Clark Very enthusiastic cricketer. Thomas is always getting involved and improved greatly throughout the season. Keep working on your bowling because a good left-arm bowler is priceless !

Well, another season of cricket has come and gone. We have had an amazing season with some great wins and some down-to-the-wire losses. All in all, I have to say that I am extremely proud of these boys and their efforts. If this season was an insight into how these boys will go in the years to come, they will give the other sides an even bigger run for their money. Our boys always showed determination each week. The improvement has been dramatic and, with only having 10 players, we did extremely well. We had a slow start but by the end of the season it was like we were a different team. It’s been a pleasure to coach these boys and watch them find their individual strengths and weaknesses. Each game the boys stood together and showed the opposition that we meant business. Boys, continue to work hard on your skills and next season we will give those Maroons a bigger run for their money. I would like to personally thank Carlton for also assisting with the scoring each game and Michael (Thomas’ dad) for stepping up when I was unable to be there. Also, Scott Beattie for making himself available to jump into the team to help make up numbers when we were short, with a special mention for taking 2 wickets in the U10s this season. I would also like to thank the parents for their ongoing support. I wouldn’t be able to coach these boys without your assistance each week. A big thanks to the committee (especially John who we beat in the last game of the season) who put in so much effort behind the scenes to make this club outstanding, We appreciate it.

Meet the Players

Patrick Delinicolis Patrick, always putting in a huge effort each week, showed how much he loved playing with this team. A very passionate player who was a great asset to the team. A great kid who was always doing something on the field, whether it be getting ready for a catch or ready for a bat and bowl. His bowling is progressing well and his batting is building with confidence.

Oscar Sullivan This was Oscar’s first season playing cricket and, from the look on his face at every game, he really enjoyed it. Playing against some really tough teams, Oscar showed just how to handle those kids. Each week he showed much improvement. He loved batting and always had a grin on his face as he took to the pitch. Can’t wait to see what you bring to the team next season !

Ashton Connelly Ashton is my quiet little achiever. He enjoyed his cricket and it showed. He took what he learnt at training and applied it to his game on match days. His batting and bowling improved each game. He showed up ready to put in his best efforts constantly which, in my eyes, is one of the best qualities I look for.

Silas Johnson Silas worked really well with the team - his fielding and catching were brilliant. He could read the bowler when batting and knew what shots to take. Silas knew again what was required of him out in the field either batting, bowling or as wicket keeper. Silas was one of my main go to wicket keepers…he was always willing to jump in and grab those catches.

Reagan Sidhu Each week Reagan showed huge improvement. He was always a little slow to get going each match but, once Reagan was entrenched in batting or bowling, he was there until the end. His batting built with confidence each game. He showed up each week ready to put in his best. Can’t wait to see what you have to offer next season.

Logan Lake It was a great season for Logan. He was very attentive at training and this showed on match days. His batting towards the end of the season showed how much he has improved but his main strength was his wicket-keeping. He, along with Silas, became another of my go to wicket-keepers. If he keeps this up, he will become a great wicket-keeper for any team further down the track. I’m just glad he’s in my team.

Thomas Beattie Thomas was my little surprise packet this season as he has a great eye for cricket. For someone who should have played in the U9s, he sure did carve up the opposition. What an effort from this little pocket rocket. He brought excitement to each game with either batting, bowling or fielding. Thomas was everywhere, making him my star allrounder.

Sean Woodard Sean is a very talented and serious cricket player - from the sock cover he made for his bat to how much he paid attention at training. This kid understands cricket. Each game, Sean improved his bowling technique and this showed each game when the wickets would fall. Sean was extremely close to getting his first hat trick but unfortunately, he just missed out. Sean has so much potential when it comes to bowling that I can’t wait to see what he can do next season.

Tristan Otomancek What a season Tristan had with the bat. Tristan’s keen eye always helped him get bat to ball and then on to the boundary. He has a great batting technique - It’s called the ‘smash it out of the park until you have to retire on 20’ technique. He listens to what I ask of him (except to keep it down along the ground). Can’t wait to see what he has in store for us next season. ______St. Christopher’s Cricket Club 26 Season 2016-17

Lucas McAndrew Unfortunately the stats don’t show just how well Lucas played this season. His determination and his confidence were amazing. Lucas had a great season and he was always willing to do what was asked of him. He improved each game in his batting and bowling. Next season he will be something to watch.

If I had to sum up our season in one word, Brilliant, comes to mind. Our first competitive season, in my opinion, was a very successful one indeed. All the boys backed up this season from the U9s plus Lucas Donnelly, and were a little taller, a little stronger and certainly a lot more skilled. The boys only dropped about 3 or 4 games this year to great sides, and a couple of those could have gone our way for sure. A little insight to how well we went was that Max Zanbaka, Kristian Zanbaka, Luca Croft, Matthew Fitzgerald and Harry Divan made the U10 Rep side. Congratulations boys! As a playing group, I believe every one of you improved from the first ball of the season to the last, and while we were a little lucky getting into the Finals because the Semi Final was washed out (which I know we would have won anyway), we gave Bankstown Sports an almighty scare and only narrowly lost. As this was my last season coaching you boys, I want to let you know what a privilege it has been for me over the last 3 years. You are all well behaved, well mannered, easy to coach and it gave me immense pleasure to watch the improvements as we went along. Of course, you don’t get a group of boys like this without mentioning the parents, who all came to every game and helped getting them ready to bat, scoring, helping with drills etc. It was a massive help to me. I believe we had more parents at our games than most other teams. ______St. Christopher’s Cricket Club 29 Season 2016-17

A big thank you to Andy Divan this year for taking them at training during the week as I had work commitments, and I have no doubt this contributed to the boy’s skill levels. Good luck in the future seasons boys, I am sure there will be much success.

Meet the Players

Max Zanbaka Max had a cracking season and the first of our rep players. He is always in the game whether it be batting, in the field or bowling. Always thinking.

Kristian Zanbaka Kristian, like his brother, made reps this season on the back of some fantastic performances. I could always depend on him to pick up a wicket or put some runs on the board.

Lucas Donnelly His first year with us and playing park cricket, Lucas picked up very quickly along the way. He grew in confidence batting and bowling and I hope to see him back.

Harley Cutting Harley was our gun keeper, keeping the byes total low and taking some great catches. Very handy with the bat, and could chime in with some wickets too.

Harrison Divan The smiling assassin! Harry is a very handy cricketer. Another of our rep players. Great with the ball, taking a few wickets, he also gained confidence with the bat, having some good digs. Also, some great catches.

Joshua Agius Josh had a terrific year, and he seemed to really enjoy his cricket. A strong hitter of the ball scoring plenty of runs, and also taking wickets. Excellent in the field with a great pair of hands.

Zachary Agius Zac, like his brother, loved his cricket this year, which showed in his performances. Also hard hitting with the bat and brilliant in the field. Always the first to get the chatter going.

Samuel Weightman My most improved this season! Not very confident last season but definitely holding his own this year. Scored some important runs for us, and took a wicket or two. A chatter box in the field and great to have around.

Kai Allie A very accurate line and length bowler who troubled even the best batsmen in the comp. An excellent fielder taking some good catches and a consistent run scorer.

Luca Croft Another of our rep players and biggest hitter of the ball, who almost cleared the rope a couple of times. A fearsome bowler off the long run and troubled all batsmen.

Matthew Fitzgerald Mr Consistent. Matthew, also a rep player this year, is an excellent bowler taking plenty of wickets this year, including a 5 wicket haul. Extremely good with the bat and a very safe pair of hands close in. ______St. Christopher’s Cricket Club 30 Season 2016-17

In competitive sport, success should always be measured by a team’s win-loss record and trophies in the cabinet. In this sense, the Under 11s remain a highly successful team. Unfortunately, sometimes those involved in kid sport use this as the only measuring stick and the true value of the endeavour is missed. Success also involves: application leading to improvement; spirit within a team and support of team-mates when things are tough; effort and persistence; enjoyment and celebration. These were all hallmarks of the Under 11s team in the 2016-17 season, which culminated in a successful defence of their premiership from the previous season. With only one other Under 11s team in the combined competition, it may seem that ours is an easy accomplishment. However, it is important to acknowledge that this team has four players who are actually eligible for Under 10s and that we also beat every Under 12s team at some point throughout the competition. The season started with successive wins over Under 12s teams and a third victory against the Under 11 Milperra Vikings team. This was followed by two successive losses against the strong Panania-East Hills and Revesby Workers Under 12s teams whose bigger, stronger boys outmuscled our bowling. We finished 2016 with a win over Milperra Vikings. 2017 began with two games in a row against the strong Panania team before our Grand Final rematch against Milperra. It was always going to be a difficult assignment against the Panania team, but we were confident such tough games would be a great lead up into the Grand Final. As it turned out the team played brilliantly, only losing in the last over of the one day game

______St. Christopher’s Cricket Club 32 Season 2016-17

against Panania before backing up to beat them in the proceeding two-day game with some outstanding bowling and fielding. We were primed for our second Grand Final in two years. The Grand Final was in our hands from the very first over after our wily leg-spinner, Baha, took a wicket with the first ball of the game and the team backed it up with a run-out on the last ball to have Milperra reeling at 2-2. Wickets fell steadily until the changeover with Milperra at 7-60 after their 25 overs. At the end of the first day, Pat and Josh had steered us to a strong position of 1-71 in our first 25 overs. Both boys pushed on slowly and steadily to reach their 30 retired not out, which was an ideal launching pad for the following batsmen. And launch we did! Ryan and Mitchell hit the ball to all parts of the field and ran beautifully between wickets before Mitchell was run out chasing runs. Lachie continued the onslaught with some masterful stroke-making and we finished our fifty overs with 176 for the loss of only three wickets. The weight of runs was too much for Milperra and a run out and two wickets to Josh saw them dismissed for 85. The game was played in a fantastic spirit and was a testament to the great sense of spirit within both teams as a conclusion to another great season of cricket. As always there are many thankyous to all those who contributed so much to our team and our club. Firstly, a huge thank you to our Committee who work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure our kids can play cricket each week. Thank you also to our wonderful group of parents who support their sons and daughters in their endeavours each and every week, but never at the expense of what is best for the team or the way the game is played. It makes the job of coaching so much easier. Thanks to co-coach Steve Burke for all his work at training and games every week, whether it be scoring, hitting catches or packing the kit and finally to Kelli, our manager, who ensures everything works each and every week.

Paul Forrester Coach

Meet the Players

Ethan Blewitt Without doubt the most improved cricketer in the team, Ethan’s top scores of 20 and 17 this year clearly indicated his progression in the game. A crucial wicket in the Grand Final demonstrated his development in all aspects of the game. As always, he was an absolute pleasure to coach.

Lachlan Burke An explosive cricketer, Lachie was playing outstanding cricket in the lead up to the season finale. He bowls a very heavy ball, taking four wickets for the year, including knocking out the middle stump of the opposition’s best batsman in the Grand Final. Lachie also hits the ball hard and played some important innings throughout the year with a top score of 27 n.o. He was selected in the BDCA Foster Shield team.

Baha Dadarkar A natural cricketer, Baha had an outstanding first season of cricket. A capable leg spinner and a technically strong batsman, Baha has a bright future in the game. Opening the bowling in the Grand Final, Baha took a wicket with his very first ball to swing the game immediately in our direction. Congratulations on an excellent debut season.

Rory Duane-Barry Rory played a few games for us this year and showed significant improvement, particularly in his bowling. He loved to bowl fast and as his control improves with practice, I am sure he will become a dangerous proposition for opposing batsmen.

______St. Christopher’s Cricket Club 33 Season 2016-17

Mia Diamond Mia epitomises all that is good about sport. Whilst working hard to improve her skills in her first year of cricket against boys two or three years her senior, Mia’s effort in every game was an example to her own team and opposing teams. Her commitment to the ball and encouragement of all team mates in the long overs in the field make her a very valuable team member. She has been an absolute pleasure to coach.

Patrick Forrester Paddy continued his strong development in the game this year with some excellent results. His batting, in particular, improved significantly, culminating in an outstanding 30 not out as opener in the Grand Final. In an area that often goes unnoticed, Pat’s contribution in the field swung the tide of a number of games. Two catches and an incredible eight run outs in the year made him a lethal target in the field. He was selected in the BDCA Foster Shield team.

Jabir Hossien Another debutant to competitive cricket, Jabir had a great first year, smiling his way through the entire season. Jabir is one of those kids who is always happy and this is a great benefit to any team. Taking some valuable wickets, including one in the Grand Final, Jabir looks set for greater things in the game in ensuing seasons.

Ryan Klem 154 runs at an average of 51.3! 10 wickets at an average of 7.4! 5 catches and two run outs! Sometimes statistics lie. In Ryan’s case, they don’t. Ryan clearly had an outstanding season. He is what I call a strike cricketer. He bowls fast, hits the ball hard and sweats on batsmen’s mistakes in the field. He is to be congratulated on a consistently brilliant effort all year.

Daniel Louka Daniel, as the best wicketkeeper in the competition, is such a steady influence on our team. A top score of 20 and 8 wickets illustrate his all-round contribution to the team. However, it is his silky and ever improving skills behind the stumps that is such a crucial element of our team. Run out chances become run outs when Daniel is keeping. Daniel was again selected in the BDCA Creak Shield team this year.

Mitchell Rowles A powerhouse of a cricketer, Mitchell had another excellent season. Our leading wicket taker with 13 wickets at an average of 5.3, Mitchell has the knack of taking wickets when they are most needed. He hits the ball very hard and has very safe hands, leading the most catches with seven in the year. Well done Mitch on another great season.

Cooper Sutton Cooper gives everything for his team. He would be picked in any team I was coaching for his sheer enthusiasm and commitment to his team mates. He is always the first to congratulate a team member on their success. This does not underestimate his ability in his own right. Cooper had a top score of 32 n.o., however it was his stump to stump bowling towards season end that was most significant. He finished with an economy rate of just 2.8 for the year. It was great to see his selection in the BDCA Creak Shield team this year.

Joshua Trevitt Another strong season from an accomplished cricketer. Josh finished the season with a batting average of 41 and a of 6.6. He is a wholehearted competitor who enjoys the game and takes pride in his performances each week. His Grand Final contribution of 32 n.o. and two wickets was testament to his efforts throughout the year. Josh was again selected in the BDCA Creak Shield team this year.

This season the team made some big improvements with some outstanding performances during the year. When the team was up for the challenge, there wasn’t a better team in the competition, with improvement in batting from all the players a highlight for me. The day we chased down a massive 194 against Revesby Workers with 15 overs to spare was the proudest moment for me. They had the right attitude, backed their ability and they deserved the win. A big disappointment for me was the lack of improvement in the field. Bowling was too inconsistent and the team didn’t back up the bowlers in the field. Too many dropped catches and a lack of concentration meant we were always chasing more runs then we should have. Like last year, our performance after Christmas were nowhere near as good as before and, as a coach, I haven’t figured out why. The boys can play the game very well but seem to find ways to not put in 100% on Saturdays when it was required. They are at an age where they need to learn to play to win and they will find the enjoyment of the game will be better. One thing I will say about the team is they are a great bunch of kids and I have been blessed with a good group of parents which has made coaching the kids a real pleasure. I would like to thank Tim Millar for helping this year. Without him my job would have been harder and it wouldn’t have been as enjoyable as it was. There were other parents that helped during the year and I want to thank them as well.

______St. Christopher’s Cricket Club 36 Season 2016-17

I would love to have all the kids back next year as I think we have the core group to give the competition a real shake next year. We had beaten Revesby Workers, who won the competition, during the year so the boys can do it when they show up with the right attitude.

Meet the Players

Hayden Swibel Hayden is a very talented cricketer, great keeper, very consistent bowler and has a great batting technique. Hayden needs to take his game to the next level and needs to learn by pushing himself a little harder. He has the skill and we would like to see him take a bigger leadership role. If he can perform consistently, I think it would help improve the whole group.

Jarrod Vangent Jarrod’s first year of cricket and it was outstanding. He is a great kid to coach and showed great ability with the bat. Jarrod has a good technique hitting through the offside and had some great performances throughout the year. He will be so much better next year with a year under his belt.

Alex Alkhair Alex had a great year this year. He is one of the better bowlers in the team, bowling a very consistent line and length. Improved with the bat and took some outstanding catches during the year. I think Alex is in for a big year next year. He can swing the ball and, as he gets stronger, will be a real handful for any batsman.

Blake Pryde Blake was a big improver and this year did well at times with the bat and is one of the best runners between the wickets. Great set of hands and the best throwing arm in the team, he was outstanding in the field. If he applied himself, Blake could be one of the leaders in the team.

Owen Millar Owen is a confidence player who can play the game very well when he is confident. Scored a fantastic 50 against Revesby Workers which got us over the line after coming in to bat under pressure. Great in the field and can bowl very well when he hits his line and length.

Marcus Spaits Marcus is one of the biggest hitters in the team and had some great innings this year. He has also improved his bowling this year. He has shown great improvement year on year and just needs to be more focused in the field to become a complete cricketer.

Dylan Cutting Dylan showed great improvement in batting and bowling this year. When he was in form, he was outstanding. If he works on being more consistent, Dylan will be a real asset to the team. Was a big improver with the ball, bowling consistent quality spin towards the end of the season.

Cameron Stevens Cameron is a very quiet kid but is an outstanding all-rounder. He was a great opening batsman and had one of the better techniques in the team. Bowled great leg spin and was always a handful for any batsman. If he can improve his fielding next year, he will be a complete player.

______St. Christopher’s Cricket Club 37 Season 2016-17

Connor Bryce Connor was the best batsman in our team and played a few fantastic knocks throughout the year. Very clean hitter and can play both sides of the wicket. Bowls with good pace and, if he keeps working on his technique, will be a dangerous bowler.

Lachlan Connelly Lachlan is new to our club and I enjoyed having him in the side. Excellent in the field and is a very consistent bowler who bowls great line and length. Good batsman who, if he works on his technique, could be a great batsman.

Caleb Divan Caleb improved his bowling this year. Although he didn’t get the wickets he should have, opposition batsmen found him hard to score off. Caleb, when confident, could bat very well and he just needs to work on his technique to get to the next level.

Lachlan Hill Lachlan improved in all aspects of his game. He is a very strong offside batsman and bowled very well this year, bowling a great line and length. He always seems to get wickets when we needed them. Enjoyed coaching him this year.

Nicholas Otomancek Nick was a big improver this year. He bowled well and his batting was great at the end of the season. As a coach, I really enjoy seeing the big improvement in players and it was great to see Nick do so well this year.

Boys, I want you to go out there and bat like ……Kane Williamson !

This year was another successful year, reaching the Grand Final for the fourth consecutive year - a fantastic achievement! Unfortunately, the weather played a part in the GF which meant we finished runners up to Revesby Heights after finishing the rounds 1 point behind them. Had we got on to play, I was very confident that we would have played strongly and come out on top as the boys were peaking at the right time. Our last 2 games against Sports highlighted this. With 186 runs on the board, Sports were 2-172 needing only 14 runs with plenty of overs left. True to form, these boys never give up and we took 8-10 to secure an unlikely victory. This confidence carried into the Major Semi against the same team. We scored 6-221 with Moh and Arash adding over 150 run partnership, batting like seasoned pros. Sports were never going to chase this and we rolled them for 139. Then came the rain!! All in all, it was a good year, plenty of improvement, heaps of good performances. We welcomed 3 new players, Ethan Nennas, Liam Bateup and Tyler Richter and it was a pleasure to have them in the team. A big thank you to Mick Martin our manager and to Kelli Forrester for scoring in Mick’s absence, and to all the parents for their support throughout the year. Meet the Players

Mahsen Narval Just keeps getting better and better. His game awareness and ability to change a game are beyond his years. He made several big scores this year and made batting look easy. Well done on your selection.

Arash Basnet Has become very reliable in both batting and bowling. Got us out off to some solid starts as an opener, and took crucial wickets with his accurate bowling.

Tom Forrester Struggled a little at times, batting against bigger boys, but I could never question his courage and commitment. Nothing ever worried Tom and he was always up for the challenge of bowling in tight situations.

Mick Forrester Big improvements with his batting. Showed a lot more aggression in taking on the bowling and also running between wickets, sometimes to the detriment of others, but showed good intent. Handy spin bowler that was hard to get away.

James Apostolakis A big tall fast bowler and middle order batsman. Put fear into batsmen with his speed and bounce and really gained more confidence as the season went on.

Jack Martin Our leg spin bowler/wicket keeper. Great team man. Just needs to apply himself more when batting, value his wicket and this will see him score more runs.

Ky Rodoreda The spin king! Has really taken to spin bowling and the opposition batsmen found him hard to play. Gained more confidence when batting and could turn into a very good all-rounder.

Abdullah Kayani The big surprise packet. When given an opportunity with the new ball he never looked back. Really good outswing bowling that good batsmen found difficult to play, but it was his improved control that was most impressive…Well done.

Ethan Nennas New player this year playing up an age group. Shared the wicket keeping throughout the year and made some valuable runs as well. Handy bowler and probably took the catch of the year in the first game.

Hanan Narval Hanan’s batting theory was swing hard and hope to connect, and quite often she did. Hanan’s bowling was always steady, taking wickets and putting pressure on the opposition.

Liam Bateup New player this year from Moorebank. Liam is a reluctant batsman, but quite a handy left-arm bowler. Lacks a little self-confidence, but did pretty well in his first year with us.

Tyler Richter Also a new player from Moorebank who was keen to have a go at anything. Tyler’s slow bowling saw batsmen think they could go after him, but often to their own downfall. He really improved throughout the year.

Sean Foster Realised that you don’t need a long run up to be effective. Off a few steps, he bowled with the same speed, but with so much more accuracy. Well done! Got off to a few starts but was never able to carry on to a big score. Was unlucky with some run-outs during the year, but it’s all learning.

Coach - Albert Abela

This is our last season for most of the boys in Junior cricket. Some have been with The Saints for around 10 years and we have had some newer players into the team so this year was a mix. I first started coaching Riley’s team (now Under 13s) some years ago and I came back into coaching and managing the team this year after helping out my little Joel in Minis last year. I have known most of the boys in the 16s and watched them grow up with my involvement with The Saints. I am so grateful for the opportunity Saints Cricket has given me to be able to have coached 3 of my 4 boys over the years. It’s not just about the coaching and cricket but to get to know your kid’s friends and have some of my kid’s friends become part of our life in either going to see Roosters games, doing numerous things that we can do in Sydney, or just to throw a frisbee or kick a ball down at the park. While we did not win many games over the years, I persisted in trying to give each player a fairly even go, when the rules of Bankstown Cricket allows so called better bowlers a lot more overs in a game. Yes, I know this cost us a lot of wins. But it has always been my belief that unless you persist with a player, even if they have little skill when they join a team, how are they ever going to get any better if they don’t get a go? As a ‘Junior Amateur Cricket Club’, are we here to just win games or are we here to develop a player who has signed up to play? For so many years I would shake the opposition team coach’s hand after we lost a game. Yet I would look at the scorebook and see that they went for the kill and 3, 4 or 5 players on his team did not get a bowl and everyone in ours got at least 2, 3 or 4 overs each. Our last game of the year when we had a plan, executed it, and won “as a team”, while the opposite team went for the kill, would have to be one of the happiest days of my life. The photo you see is just after this win and I think, it’s fair to say, a photo says a million words.

I hope I have instilled in the boys a passion for cricket, which I believe is one of the best games on earth. I hope the boys have some solid stepping stones to allow them to go on and play cricket for the rest of their life in any grade they wish and I am so proud that “every player” can strap on the pads and hold their own with the bat (don’t let me down boys LOL) and the can throw them the ball and say “give us your best mate” and they can all bowl really well. It was very interesting to read the Glenn McGrath autobiography which reveals that he was never given a proper bowl when he played his Junior Cricket for Narromine. Yet bowling is what he wanted to do so he left home, moved into a caravan here in Ramsgate, walked across the road to a park and just bowled to himself. He forced his way into playing for Sutherland, taking wickets and the rest is history. It was great coaching and managing you boys. Just two more years before we can have a beer together! It’s up to you now as to what level you want to push towards.

Albert Abela Coach

Meet the Players

Adrian Bai Studying for the HSC this season, Adrian was missed after Christmas but it was great to have him back in our last game. Adrian would always be one of our key opening bowlers whom opposition would always have trouble scoring off. One of the cleanest actions you will see. Adrian had a quieter year with the bat but is capable of some long innings and I know has a great cricket future if he wants it. Coming from Pymble to play each Saturday shows he loves the game. Hope we can play together in the future Adrian!

Alex Passarelli With all round skill bowling, batting and wicket keeping, Alex would always come out to bat with a big smile on his face and walk off with a smile on his face! There were some innings where the team really needed to get a good partnership happening and Alex would deliver most of the time. Another great season Alex.

Ethan Burke Coming up a grade from the year before, Ethan developed all year with some outstanding performances with bat, ball and fielding. He had some excellent innings where he became anchor man so the team could build partnerships and I saw him also do this in Senior cricket in the afternoons playing against him. I will always play his shot in my mind …..as he hit it to deep mid-wicket to win that last game !

Harry Anderson What can I say - Harry just loves his cricket! Always down at the nets when he can, working on his mystery balls and working on different ways to get a batsman out. I witnessed the best innings I have seen from Harry, digging in for his 25 runs over 2 hours in the last game, turning the strike over for Alex to hit....a patient and sensible innings. Great mental strength is a very good trait to have. Use this innings as a platform not just for your cricket but everything you do. Sometimes we need to dig in be it sport, studies, work etc and the results are very rewarding.

Jonathan Delinicolis New to the side this year, Jono is a great all round player. Imagine a cross between Adam Gilchrist with the bat, Ricky Ponting in the field, including always talking the boys up, and with bowling like Shaun Tait... the ball never goes in the same spot but, when it does, is very dangerous. That’s not a bad trait to have when bowling as the batsman never knows what’s coming next! Always happy and positive. Excellent season Jono. ______St. Christopher’s Cricket Club 45 Season 2016-17

Callum Whyte With a leg injury sustained from winter sport last year, Callum could only play the last game. We made him Captain and it was so good that he was part of our last game. I actually think the boys were so happy he was back that he brought new energy to the team so the whole team performed better..... and we won !

Daniel Cutrupi Daniel had a huge year. He developed some real fire in the belly for bowling and ended up being one of the best bowlers in the team. His batting was rock solid with a number of not outs. The boys turned to Daniel for more input as the season went on. Not bad for a quiet kid in only his second season.

Ben McGuire Ben had an up and down year but always worked on ways to improve himself. He admitted he was in a form slump with bat and ball coming into the last game and ended up playing one of his best innings ever to hit the winning runs with Ethan. Ben loves cricket and, if you love doing something, you generally get very good at it! Keep going Ben.

Ethan Carlos In only his second year, Ethan has become an excellent player. He was always consistent with the bat and gets better all the time. Ethan developed some really good rhythm after Christmas where he looked very comfortable bowling and his pace picked up to be one of the fastest in the team. His economy rate with the ball was 2.83 runs each over. He has natural sporting ability and can go places if he wants it in his heart. A really good year Ethan.

Harrison Abela Haz has been become a rock-solid, all round player. He looks very comfortable defending his wicket. Every time he was given the ball, we knew he was a joker card that could take wickets to break a partnership if catches stuck. I hope the old man didn’t embarrass him too much in front of his mates with some of my speeches before or after the games!

Kosta Savvas Improving with every game, Kosta really enjoys his cricket. Kosta is a bit like me…. he may not be a born cricketer skill wise, but he puts in and keeps trying to learn and improve all the time. As long as you want to learn and try to get better, which he does, you will become an even more steady player. Just keep being positive, enjoy your cricket Kosta and you will keep getting better. That’s an absolute promise!

Mark Walter Wicket keeper, batsman and bowler, Mark is a very good all round player. He had some very good innings with the bat and can dig in. Batsmen find it hard to score off his bowling and he knows to put it on the stumps. They miss, they are out. Pretty simple really. Mark has continued to get better each year. The only thing wrong with his game is that he is a Dogs supporter. What is it with Dogs supporters? They love talking it up but when they lose ….they go quiet!

Matthew Bailey With a nice clean bowling action, Matt always seemed to bog down batsmen and take wickets when we really needed it. Keep doing what you are doing Matt but try to pick the pace up as you get older. Let’s not dwell on your batting, but I have to say hitting the ball with the back of your bat down to leg-gully for a couple of runs after Christmas was the most bizarre shot I have ever seen and will likely never see anything like it ever again ! How did you do that?

C RESERVE

Back Row L-R - Alec Bennetts, Gurjinder Sidhu, Gary Bennetts, Matthew Agius, Mark Walter, Steve Burke, Ethan Burke Front Row L-R - Michael Martin, Santosh Vanka, Ranjeet Singh, Stephen Mitchell, Paul Collins, Jaiden Collins Absent - George Apostolakis, James Apostolakis, Ethan Carlos, Harry Anderson, Alexander Passarelli, Ray Evans Jack Martin

The 2016/17 season was certainly an interesting one for the C Reserve team. The team itself was made up of the biggest bunch of motley rag-tags ever to grace a cricket field! From blokes that had never played cricket before, to blokes whose old injuries were worn as badges of pride, to a bunch of young blokes who should (or should not) have been playing in our grade. But despite this, the camaraderie established between the guys was second to none. It was like we had all known each other for years, such was the great mateship in which the team came together. Perhaps unsurprisingly for such a new team (young in heart, old in age) we had a fairly slow start to the season, losing most matches. This can mostly be blamed on (former) captain Gaz for losing the coin toss every week. But what was encouraging was seeing the team slowly, but surely, improve every match. Every week, our batting would improve just that little bit more. Our bowlers would start to find their rhythm and take more wickets. More catches were held and our standard of fielding rose noticeably. This eventually culminated in the team winning the last few matches of the season, particularly the last game in which we dethroned the top-ranked Panania side with a thrilling 1 wicket victory. Victory never tasted so sweet. Along the way, there were some incredible individual performances worth a mention. Sid and Apostle’s last wicket stand of 77 runs in the final match to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat was incredible. AB’s slow-ball hat-trick was just brilliant. Mick collapsing from exhaustion after a blistering 59 n.o. against South West to win us the match. Singa running himself and other teammates out on multiple occasions. Sid’s ‘experiment’ with spin that resulted in a 10 ball over. And who can forget Santy being pulled from umpiring duties after allowing too many consecutive 7-ball overs.

______St. Christopher’s Cricket Club 48 Season 2016-17

Even though we may not have won the trophy, there was one area in which we were leagues ahead of every other team…..and that was our culture ! Every week, our blokes turned up and played the game with a positive outlook and in the right spirit. While other teams were degenerating into in-fighting and aggressiveness, the C Res team took it all in their stride and played with pride. It was a pleasure to be part of such a great team, that it really didn’t matter whether the result went our way or not. The only time arguments broke out was over whether it was someone’s ‘turn’ to open the batting! Boys, it was a pleasure. Many laughs and great times were had. I hope to see you out on the field next season.

Mitcho Captain

Meet the Players

Michael ‘Mick it’s all in the stick’ Martin Comparisons with Australian all-rounder James ‘The Finisher’ Faulkner were appropriate when talking about Mick (praise which I’m sure he would undoubtedly accept). Mick was a pillar of the team, someone who you could rely on in any circumstance. Need a few wickets taken? Chuck the ball to Mick. Need some quick runs? Send Mick in to the middle. The only bloke to score 2 half-centuries this season (but sadly not a century, falling agonisingly short on 96), Mick’s infectious love of the game and upbeat attitude often managed to dull our crushing defeats.

Jaiden ‘Jai Bananas’ Collins When things weren’t going our way, the team would often collectively think ‘well, it’s time to rely on Jai again’. And indeed, Jai was that ever reliable constant force in the team. When all other players fell away, there was Jai who resolutely dug in. He was a true inspiration to the rest of us, and I think we all learnt a great deal from his steadfast attitude. Batting, bowling, amazing in the field: you name it, he could do it. His season could probably best be summed up by the fact that his name appeared in The Torch every second week! He has many, many good years ahead of him with such a great attitude to the game.

Gurjinder ‘Sid Leggy Siddles’ Sidhu What can I say about Sid? Well, how about stick to your fast bowling and never, ever bowl spin again! Like many of us, Sid hadn’t played cricket for a number of years but his natural ability shone through very quickly. We admittedly heaped a lot of pressure on Sid, having him often opening the bowling and batting. Many people would be crushed under such pressure, but not Sid who rose to the occasion every time. His secret was having such a great attitude towards the game and those around him. Our team benefited greatly from his ability and upbeat nature.

George ‘The 13th Apostle’ Apostolakis We all knew that George would turn up to the games, the question was simply when he would do so! But when he was on the field, boy, did the opposition have a hard time. I would say that George was our best bowler this season with an incredible strike rate and runs were hard to get off his bowling. His experience and eye for the game was a blessing to all of us, as was his competitive but fair nature. Being an umpire himself, he certainly wasn’t afraid to call a spade a spade, especially when opposition umpires made numerous blunders, leaving us in stitches.

Gary ‘Nice Gary Gaz’ Bennetts One of the most impressive attributes of Captain Gaz was his ability to lose the coin toss every week, leading to a leadership challenge of Kevin Rudd/Julia Gillard proportions. But more seriously, Gaz had a great season particularly with ball in hand. His short run up and deceptive spin troubled many a batter, picking up well deserved wickets. His eye for the game and well thought out strategies devised throughout the week impressed all of us, particularly those of us whose simple aim was to ‘not get flogged this week’. Thanks for the great season Gaz. ______St. Christopher’s Cricket Club 49 Season 2016-17

Alec ‘AB what about me’ Bennetts Although we didn’t get to see as much of AB as we would have liked due to Year 12 commitments (pfft, what has education ever done for anyone?), his presence was very welcome. The highlight of his season was an amazing hat-trick from some world class slow bowling that bamboozled the opposition. (It’s irrelevant that it was achieved in a practice match…). His commitment in the field was also second-to-none, showing us oldies what actual decent fielding looks like. We may not see AB again next year so, from all of us, thanks so much for playing and we hope we can convince you otherwise!

Stephen ‘Mitcho cracked a stitcho’ Mitchell All hail the Mighty Mitcho! He earned his way to the top spot by never losing a toss. The title of Captain however is well deserved by our team’s leading wicket taker and run scorer. Mitcho’s commitment to the team was outstanding, playing more games than anyone else and always the first to turn up (unless the Wiggles are in town). Showing signs of aging (most likely from Captaincy pressure), Mitcho filled in as keeper for our last game proving there is nothing this legend cannot handle. Congratulations on a fantastic season Captain Mitcho. May there be plenty more to come under your great leadership! (written by PC)

Santosh ‘Santy keys in his panty’ Vanka The turning point of Santy’s season was a trip to India, where we are convinced he received some training from the Indian cricket team. Upon his return, it was like having a Ravi Ashwin impersonator in the team, with Santy ripping some amazing spin bowling that terrorised the opposition. It was an amazing thing to behold! But what I liked most about Santy was his incredibly joyful attitude towards the game, even when things weren’t going our way. Santy even saw the funny side of being given out caught behind after forgetting to take his car keys out of his pocket. Thanks for the great laughs this season. I hope we weren’t too hard on you!

Ranjeet ‘Singa bowls like Binga’ Singh Singa was a late import into the team, but the (slightly exaggerated) promises of C Reserve glory meant he became quickly indispensable. His youthful enthusiasm, and lack of debilitating ‘old man’ injuries, meant he was a highly prized member of the team. In particular, Singa always looked lethal with ball in hand. In his first match, his express bouncers left one opposition batsman with multiple bruises. What a sight to behold ! He also had an uncanny ability to run himself or other team members out, often to our bemusement. We hope you remain a part of our team for many years to come but next year, you’re buying a beer for every person you run out!

Paul ‘Pauly Walnuts’ Collins Late in the season, Pauly earned himself a second nickname – The Gazelle. And just by looking at him, you’d have to agree that the nickname suits well – elegant, graceful and light on his feet…right? Well, Paul’s contribution behind the stumps was nothing short of spectacular throughout the season (and hence the second nickname). In the weeks where Pauly was unable to make it, we truly missed his presence. His ability to read the bowler well and make stunning saves off some less-than-perfect bowling saved the team many runs. But his contribution in organising the team every week should also be acknowledged. It’s a thankless and difficult job, so we thank you Pauly for all your hard work this year.

Steven ‘Burkey, don’t worry it’s mine’ Burke Good ol’ Burkey is a true all-rounder if I’ve ever seen one. Beneath a humble and jovial exterior lies a bloke with lots of skill and a great attitude. Burkey has the enviable ability to always look on the bright side and see the positive in every situation. Bowled out for 50? Don’t worry, Burkey will be able to see some positive in it! It was a great reminder to us all about the spirit in which we should be playing the game, and I think we all benefit greatly from his encouragement. His commitment in the field was also noteworthy – even with a leg that was about to fall off in one match, he still hobbled with determination after the ball. He should be thankful we put him in the outfield.

______St. Christopher’s Cricket Club 50 Season 2016-17

Matthew ‘Matty that’s gotta hurt’ Agius I have never known someone that has such an uncanny ability like Matty to be able to stop a speeding ball with every part of his body except his hands! And I mean that in a positive way. Matty has such great commitment in the field but he always seemed to cop a bad bounce or poor return from his teammates. You name it – shins, arms, fingertips, chest – he copped it sweet. But we couldn’t have done it without you Matty! It made us wince at times (particularly the one to the shins) but we absolutely loved your commitment. You undoubtedly saved us scores of runs.

The Support Crew Throughout the year, the team relied heavily on a number of our junior players to fill numerous vacancies on game day. We’d like to extend a massive thanks and sincere gratitude to Jack Martin, Ethan Burke, Alex Passarelli, Harry Anderson, Mark Walter, Ethan Carlos and James Apostolakis. The father of cricket Ray Evans also joined us for a game. We had a blast playing with you guys and I hope you were able to learn some new skills from the best C-Reserve team the Club has ever had.* * Claim unsubstantiated.

B GRADE

Players - Sebastian De Bellis, David Cosgrove, Andrew Phelps, Cameron Phelps, Mitchell Wise, Tim Croft, Leigh Berwick, Peter Solway, Andrew Divan, Luke Stocks, Mark Davidson, Chris Yates, Jim Whitney, Anthony Harb, David Wylie, Jayden Yates, Ray Evans

I have been associated with great teams over the last 35 years but this one wasn’t one of them. Probably had one of the best sides on paper (toilet paper) in B Grade. We started the season winning our first 3 games and I thought ‘How good is this?’……then we lost every game from there. Our issue was we had too many players who couldn’t play every week and the team wasn’t settled. If we showed up each week we could have won the competition. We can score big one week and get bowled out below 100 the next. Our fielding was horrific at times and our bowling wasn’t up to scratch and wickets were down on last year. In saying that, 3 players, Luke Stocks, David Cosgrove and Cameron Phelps scored 100 this year so we had the talent but probably not the commitment to do well this year. But still enjoyed playing with the boys - we had some laughs and that’s what it’s all about. Hope to see most of the team return next year.

Andrew Divan

Meet the Players

Dave Wylie ‘Probably one of the greatest cricket minds’…… wouldn’t be used in the same sentence ever with Dave. Dave is a great allrounder but under bowled himself all year with the motto ‘just want to give everyone a go’. His battles with Tilly will be spoken about for generations.

______St. Christopher’s Cricket Club 53 Season 2016-17

Cameron Phelps One of our big signings who was probably our most consistent batsman, fielder and bowler behind Andrew Divan and Dave Wylie. Scored a great 100 and a 50 and was our top run scorer. He was also our top wicket taker. It was a shame he had weekend work commitments which meant he couldn’t play every week. His season went downhill when he bought a fence paling with a handle off the internet. Actually, I can say the team never won again when he purchased it. He cursed us !

Luke Stocks Luke scored his first 100 for the club which was fantastic but, like most players, missed a few games due to work and other commitments. He is a great bowler on his day when he pitches it up and lets it swing.

Andrew Phelps One of the most intense cricketers I have ever played with. If there was a Barry Blow Up award he would have got it. I have never seen a cricket bat fly like it’s just been launched from NASA. Andrew hits the ball hard and is a great left arm bowler.

Leigh Berwick If Leigh added his wife’s surname to his initials, he would have been LBW ! Unfortunately got more LBW batting then bowling. Great guy to have in your team. Great batsman with a great technique and a very good fielder.

Seb De Bellis Seb was one of our consistent batters, best driver in our team and a great competitor. Ripped through the Bankstown Sports middle order when he bowled for the first time this year. Was close to getting a 100 this year but found a way to get himself out.

Mark ‘Funky’ Davidson Mark is one of the more handsome players in our team - he even loves to wear his designer glasses while batting. But if I had to be a critic, it would be nice if he laundered his pants and cricket shirt. Has been a very good cricketer for our club for a long time.

Dave Cosgrove Great to have Dave back this year. He scored a 150 with the bat but, like most of our players, was unable to play as many games as I would have liked. Great bowler who still bowls with good pace and was unlucky not to get a few more wickets.

Tim Croft Was great having Tim in our side, but again another player who couldn’t play every week due to injury and other commitments. It is great to get Dads of kids who play playing in our Senior ranks. Great allrounder.

Mitch Wise Mitch had an up and down season with the bat this year. We couldn’t tell if he was in form because he was only facing a few balls before getting out. But Mitch did manage to play a couple of good digs during the year. We thought his keeping gloves had holes in them at times. Like the rest of us, was consistently inconsistent this year.

Anthony Harb The biggest disappointment of the year, was always out with the boys instead of playing cricket. Spent more time talking about our wives and girlfriends than scoring runs in the middle and his sledging towards his own team mates was horrific. Great season mate!

______St. Christopher’s Cricket Club 54 Season 2016-17

Jayden Yates If I had a team full of Jaydens, we would have won the competition. Unfortunately could only muster 3 games due to Rugby League commitments. Great in the field, tidy bowler and a great batsman.

Chris Yates It was hard for Chris playing in the shadow of his son being the best player in his family. I think at times it was quite embarrassing for him. Bowled a few overs now and then and was out injured for the rest of the season. Think Chris needs to have a hard look at himself and put in at pre-season to make sure his body is ready for week to week park cricket.

Jimmy Whitney Jimmy was a late recruitment to our team when the captain was desperate for results so grabbed one of his lawn bowling mates. Jimmy could bat and was a handy bowler. We will be raiding the Picnic Point bowling club for more talent next year.

Peter Solway We always knew what to expect with Pete - just like his love life, he was in for a good time, not a long time. Can hit a 6 and is great in the field. Bowlers used to hate bowling to him when he was on. Don’t know who coached him but I never seen him play a forward defence.

Andrew Divan The best-looking player in the team. He found it hard to soar like an eagle when he was surrounded by turkeys ! Deserved so much better than what his team mates dished up at times. Wasn’t sure if the players actually had watches, as most never showed up on time.
