Diane Monroe

Diane Monroe, a graduate of The University of the Arts, has created a special niche for herself in a crowded marl

Quartet. She is a frequent performer at such renowned festivals as Marlboro, Caramoor,

Sitka, North Sea Jazz, Mellon Jazz, New Music America, Bach Aria Festival and Institute, and The Quartet Program, not to mention Mark O'Connor's Fiddle Camp. With famed cellist, YoYo Ma, Monroe performed Henry Cowell's string quartets at the Brooklyn

Academy of Music; she has appeared with the Ethos Percussion Ensemble in Weill Recital

Hall at Carnegie Hall, and as guest soloist at Symphony Space in New York City.

As a reviewer in The Philadelphia Inquirer noted of Monroe "The stylish fingerslides of her jazz-violin style (think Stephane Grappelli with lots of funk) gave extra personality to her work and other composers' works. Compositionally, on evidence of her uptempo

Vibes and Groovin' Roots, she walks lines so fine as to be invisible, with interplay too intricate and textured to be improvised but too spontaneous not to be. Don't ask, just enjoy. Her remarkable solo-violin piece Spiritual, Blues and Beyond jumps off from Bach and rampages through blues and Paganinian virtuosity seamlessly." If you can't catch a concert by Diane Monroe, you can hear samples of her work on her website: http://www.monroesbow.com

Eileen NefY

Contemporary art often incorporates different media, can be disorienting, and evokes a strong mix of interpretations, memories, and feelings. For these very reasons, though, many viewers reject new art, and wish to retreat to the safety of the familiar - an unfortunate reaction. The work of artist Eileen Neff is unusual in that, while as challeng- ing and evocative of work by other respected contemporary artists, hers also draws in and engages even the most skeptical viewer. Whether Neff 's pieces explore the work and personality of Cezanne, analyze anew the use of perspective in art, or examine the complex relationship between mankind and the rest of nature, all are marked by an intelligent, original, and ultimately humanistic sensibility: her work calls upon us to see the world, and understand it differently, and we willingly accept this challenge. This transformative mission is accomplished via the manipulation of paintings, photographs, and three-dimensional objects, another mark of Neff's creativity and ability to use media in new ways.

Eileen Neff earned her BA degree from Temple University, her BFA from The University of the Arts, and her MFA from Tyler School of Art. She has exhibited in a wide range of venues in Philadelphia and beyond, including the Locks Gallery, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and New York's Artists Space. Among her numerous commissions and awards have been an Artist's Residency at the MacDowell

Art Colony, a Leeway Foundation Grant, a Pew Fellowship in the Arts, and a Fellowship in

Photography from the National Endowment for the Arts. She writes regularly for publica- tions such as ARTFORUM, where she has been a critic since 1989. Eileen Neff has also taught in several departments at The University of the Arts for 12 years, helping new artists at her alma mater to find their own voice and vision. Walter E. Dallas

Philadelphia's Freedom Theatre is the oldest African-American theatre in the state, and

only the second African-American theatre to join the prestigious League of Resident

Theatres. The theatre, founded in 1966, has grown substantially since its founding; two

years ago, the opening of its new, 299-seat, state-of-the-art John E. Allen, Jr. Theatre

honored the groundbreaking worl< of the organization's founder. Substantial credit for

the success of Freedom Theatre belongs to Walter Dallas, who became the Artistic

Director of the organization in 1992.

Walter Dallas, a graduate of Morehouse College and the Yale School of Drama, also

studied music and theology at Harvard University, as welt as dance and theater in traditional African societies. He taught theatre at Antioch College and the University of

California, Berkeley. Of particular note to this institution is the fact that he created the

School of Theater Arts for The University of the Arts in 1983, while a tenured faculty

member here. Mr. Dallas has earned many awards for his work, including a local Emmy

Award (San Francisco), New York's prestigious AUDELCO National Achievement Award for Excellence in Black Theatre, and several Bronze Jubilee Awards for Outstanding

Direction. Atlanta's Mayor Maynard Jackson proclaimed a "Walter Dallas Day" in his

honor; he has also been honored with two Creative Genius Awards from the Atlanta

Circle of Drama Critics.

In the decade since he joined Freedom Theatre, Dallas has injected new vitality, creativity,

and resources into that organization. Through his efforts, the Theatre has introduced world premieres of works by James Baldwin, Leslie Lee, Sam Kelley, Kia Corthron,

Ntozake Shange, Samm-Art Williams, Clarice Taylor, Thulani Davis, and others. History of The University of tiie Arts

The University of the Arts evolved from two century-

old institutions: the Philadelphia College of Art and

the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts.

The Philadelphia College of Art (PCA) was formed in

1876 along with the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Initially known as the Pennsylvania Museum and

School of Industrial Art, the institutions were

established in response to the interest in art and art

education that was stimulated by the country's

Centennial Exposition. In 1946 the school became

known as the Philadelphia Museum School of Art,

reflecting the expanded programs that trained artists

in many other areas, including fine arts. The school

received accreditation in 1959, and in 1964 separated from the Museum to become the Philadelphia College

of Art. Today, the Philadelphia College of Art and

Design of The University of the Arts offers curricula in

design, media arts, fine arts, crafts, and museum and

art education.

The performing arts programs of The University of the

Arts date from 1870, when three graduates of the

Conservatory of Leipzig opened one of the first

European style conservatories of music in America: the Philadelphia Musical Academy The Musical

Academy became an independent college of music in

1950, granting a Bachelor of Music degree after a four-year course of study-one of only eight such

music colleges in the nation at the time. While still

offering only a music program, the school changed its

name to the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts

(PCPA) in 1976, the first such college in Pennsylvania.

One year later the former Philadelphia Dance

Academy became part of PCPA, and in 1983 the School of Theater was created, thus achieving the

college's ideal balance of performing arts: dance,

music and theater arts.

In 1985, PCA and PCPA joined to become the Philadel-

phia Colleges of the Arts, and a true visual and

performing arts university was in its formative stages.

With its inauguration in 1987, The University of the

Arts is the largest comprehensive educational

institution of its kind in the nation, preparing students

for professional careers in design, fine arts, crafts,

dance, music, and theater arts.

In 1997 the University added a new College of Media

and Communication, offering degrees in communica-

tion, writing for film and television, and multimedia. 18/0 Philadelphia Musical Academy founded
