Keynote Address—Summary Notes San Francisco Bay as the Fountainhead and Wellspring Jack Lenor Larsen Jack Lenor Larsen led off the 9th Biennial Symposium of the Textile Society of America in Oakland, California, with a plenary session directed to TSA members and conference participants. He congratulated us, even while proposing a larger and more inclusive vision of our field, and exhorting us to a more comprehensive approach to fiber. His plenary remarks were spoken extemporaneously from notes and not recorded. We recognize that their inestimable value deserves to be shared more broadly; Jack has kindly provided us with his rough notes for this keynote address. The breadth of his vision, and his insightful comments regarding fiber and art, are worthy of thoughtful consideration by all who concern themselves with human creativity. On the Textile Society of America Larsen proffered congratulations on the Textile Society of America, now fifteen years old. -

2011 Fresh Wood student woodworking competition 2011 Fresh Wood Judges Thank you to the following industry professionals for committing their time to the Fresh Wood competition as judges! Margaret Casey joined the World Market Center Las Vegas in October 2007 as Director of Programming where she develops new initiatives and focused educational programs for the semi-annual Las Vegas Markets designed to engage, educate and empower retailers and the industry at large. Casey has more than 18 years of experience in the home furnishings industry along with extensive background in the design and production of large-scale events for Fortune 500 companies. She is also a founding member of the Sustainable Furnishings Council and currently its Vice President. Andrew Glantz is owner of Zenith Design in Scottsdale, AZ a one person furniture design studio. After teaching Graphic Arts for ten years, he turned to period piece renovation and construction for six years before devoting his eff orts solely to contemporary, sculptural furniture design and construction. Andrew is an arts activist and has been involved with multiple arts councils. He is a member of The Furniture Society, a former trustee and past president and has been a presenter at the Society’s Annual Conference. Alan Harp is a designer/maker at Alan Harp Design specializing in custom furniture, photography, product design, and design consulting. His work has been shown at numerous national design exhibitions and publications. Alan previously served as the furniture design and CNC instructor at the Advanced Wood Products Laboratory (AWPL) at Georgia Tech’s College of Architecture. Alan is a graduate of Georgia Tech with a BS and MS degree in Industrial Design. -

RITUAL USE OF THE HUMAN FORM: A CONTEXTUAL ANALYSIS OF THE “CHARLIE CHAPLIN” FIGURES OF THE MAYA LOWLANDS by LISA M. LOMITOLA B.A. University of Central Florida, 2008 A thesis in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Anthropology in the College of Sciences at the University of Central Florida Orlando, Florida Summer Term 2012 ©2012 Lisa M. Lomitola ii ABSTRACT Small anthropomorphic figures, most often referred to as “Charlie Chaplins,” appear in ritual deposits throughout the ancient Maya sites of Belize during the late Preclassic and Early Classic Periods and later, throughout the Petén region of Guatemala. Often these figures appear within similar cache assemblages and are carved from “exotic” materials such as shell or jade. This thesis examines the contexts in which these figures appear and considers the wider implications for commonly held ritual practices throughout the Maya lowlands during the Classic Period and the similarities between “Charlie Chaplin” figures and anthropomorphic figures found in ritual contexts outside of the Maya area. iii Dedicated to Corbin and Maya Lomitola iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to thank Drs. The Symposium committee has sought diverse presentations about these three categories hoping to appeal to widely different tastes. Yet perhaps each one of us is a maker and also a conceptualist AND a career minded person, merging many tastes. Might not a collector of art jewelry, who happens to be a business executive, be engaged with our three categories just like a beginning metals student? Of course they are, for we are all brought together by that great cultural bonding agent, art and its creative process.
