Dale Chihuly | Chronology 1941 Born September 20 in Tacoma, Washington, to George Chihuly and Viola Magnuson Chihuly. 1957 Older brother and only sibling, George, dies in a navy flight-training accident in Pensacola, Florida. 1958 His father suffers a fatal heart attack at age fifty-one, and his mother has to go to work. 1959 Graduates from high school in Tacoma. Enrolls at College of Puget Sound (now University of Puget Sound) in his hometown. 1960 Transfers to University of Washington in Seattle, where he studies interior design and architecture. 1961 Joins Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity and becomes rush chairman. Learns to melt and fuse glass. 1962 Interrupts his studies and travels to Florence to focus on art. Frustrated by his inability to speak Italian, he moves on to the Middle East. 1963 Works on a kibbutz in Negev desert, Israel. Reinspired, returns to University of Washington and studies under Hope Foote and Warren Hill. In a weaving class with Doris Brockway, incorporates glass shards into woven tapestries. 1964 Returns to Europe, visiting Leningrad and making the first of many trips to Ireland. 1965 Receives BA in interior design from University of Washington. In his basement studio, blows his first glass bubble by melting stained glass and using a metal pipe. 1966 Earns money for graduate school as a commercial fisherman in Alaska. Enters University of Wisconsin at Madison on a full scholarship, to study glassblowing in the first glass program in the United States, taught by Harvey Littleton. 1967 After receiving MS in sculpture from University of Wisconsin, enrolls at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in Providence, where he begins exploration of environmental works using neon, argon, and blown glass. -

Margaret Casey joined the World Market Center Las Vegas in October 2007 as Director of Programming where she develops new initiatives and focused educational programs for the semi-annual Las Vegas Markets designed to engage, educate and empower retailers and the industry at large. Casey has more than 18 years of experience in the home furnishings industry along with extensive background in the design and production of large-scale events for Fortune 500 companies. She is also a founding member of the Sustainable Furnishings Council and currently its Vice President. Andrew Glantz is owner of Zenith Design in Scottsdale, AZ a one person furniture design studio. After teaching Graphic Arts for ten years, he turned to period piece renovation and construction for six years before devoting his eff orts solely to contemporary, sculptural furniture design and construction. Andrew is an arts activist and has been involved with multiple arts councils. He is a member of The Furniture Society, a former trustee and past president and has been a presenter at the Society’s Annual Conference. Alan Harp is a designer/maker at Alan Harp Design specializing in custom furniture, photography, product design, and design consulting. His work has been shown at numerous national design exhibitions and publications. Alan previously served as the furniture design and CNC instructor at the Advanced Wood Products Laboratory (AWPL) at Georgia Tech’s College of Architecture. Alan is a graduate of Georgia Tech with a BS and MS degree in Industrial Design. -

Today’s objectives: 1. For each student, using colored markers and water, to create a “macchia” or spot of color reminiscent of Dale Chihuly’s colorful glass work. 2. To allow students to observe what happens when colors mix together. 3. To combine all of the students’ individual pieces into a larger work that will represent a kaleidoscope of colors. On view December 9, 2015-July 3, 2016, New Arrivals: Matisse Prints & Drawings features approximately 40 recently acquired prints and drawings, most bestowed to the BMA by the collection of Matisse’s daughter, Marguerite Matisse Duthuit, and The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation in New York. The exhibition—one of nine celebrating the museum’s enormously successful Campaign for Art—demonstrates the legacy of renowned collectors Etta and Claribel Cone and the BMA’s continued relationship with members of the Matisse family. “Etta and Claribel Cone’s dedication to collecting the art of Matisse established at the BMA one of the most comprehensive collections of the artist’s work,” said Jay Fisher, Interim Co-Director and Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs. “The close personal relationship between the artist and the Cone sisters provided the opportunity to acquire key works from the late ’20s and early ’30s, while encouraging Etta to collect all aspects of his work—painting, sculpture, and graphic arts.” Recognizing the unique character of the BMA’s Matisse collection, the artist’s family has made significant gifts that have added breadth to the museum’s collection. This support, which has included loans for major exhibitions such as Matisse: Painter as Sculptor, has enabled the BMA to organize exhibitions and undertake new research on the artist. -

Annual Budget Process The City of Durham’s annual budget process is the framework for communicating major financial operational objectives and for allocating resources to achieve them. This process is a complex undertaking involving the whole government. The process begins in October and runs until the end of June. By state law, the City must adopt an annual budget ordinance by June 30 of each year. Coordination of the process is essential to the building of the budget. To achieve coordination, a calendar of activities is summarized on this page. Once the budget is approved, the focus of the budget becomes control. Ongoing monitoring of expenditures and revenues throughout the year is a responsibility shared by department heads and the Budget Department. The Accounting Services Division ensures that changes are correctly entered and payments are appropriate. The Budget and Management Services Department reviews all requests from departments to make sure that sufficient appropriations have been budgeted. All funds are reviewed on a regular basis, and a budget report is submitted to the City Council on a quarterly basis. The City Manager has the authority to transfer budgeted amounts between departments within any function. However, transfers between functions, additions or deletions require a budget amendment. The Autobiography of Alice B Toklas (1933) by Gertrude Stein Chapter 1 - BEFORE I CAME TO PARIS I was born in San Francisco, California 1877. California, mid 1800s Alice B. Toklas circa 1878 I have in consequence always preferred living in a temperate climate but it is difficult, on the continent of Europe or even in America, to find a temperate climate and live in it. My mother's father was a pioneer, he came to California in '49, he married my grandmother who was very fond of music. She was a pupil of Clara Schumann's father. My mother was a quiet charming woman named Emilie. My father came of polish patriotic stock. His grand-uncle raised a regiment for Napoleon and was its colonel. His father left his mother just after their marriage, to fight at the barricades in Paris, but his wife having cut off his supplies, he soon returned and led the life of a conservative well to do land owner. I myself have had no liking for violence and have always enjoyed the pleasures of needlework and gardening. I am fond of paintings, furniture, tapestry, houses and flowers and even vegetables and fruit-trees. I like a view but I like to sit with my back turned to it. I led in my childhood and youth the gently bred existence of my class and kind. I had some intellectual adventures at this period but very quiet ones. When I was about nineteen years of age I was a great admirer of Henry James. I felt that The Awkward Age would make a very remarkable play and I wrote to Henry James suggesting that I dramatise it. -
