A 1975 Philadelphia College of Art graduate. Butter continued his education at Washington University, St. Louis, where he received his MFA

in 1977. His work, informed by his industrial and mechanical interests, also echoes the delicacy of flower petals, leaves, and other influences from nature, and has been described by one critic as "a kind of suspended meditation." Many of his best known works use fiberglass to convey a

sense of fluidity, translucency, and structural mystery, while some of his more recent works employ steel-link chains, resin-stiffened work gloves, oars, and other objects. Butter's sculptures

are represented in the permanent collections of Buffalo's Albright-Knox Gallery, Minnesota's

Walker At Center, the Frederick Wiseman Collection in California, and the Metropolitan Museum

of Art, among many others. In just 1 6 years he has participated in 1 5 solo exhibitions, three two-

person shows, and over 25 group exhibitions in locations such as Caracas, Lyons, Tokyo, New

York City, and Lausanne. Butter has also been much in demand as a teacher at Parsons School of Design, Rhode Island School of Design, and Yale University. In addition to receiving highly- competitive grants for his works from The University of the Arts and the New York Foundation for the Arts, he successfully secured three "Emerging Artists" awards from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Janine Cappello, Alumni Award Dancer Janine Cappello earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the Philadelphia College of the Performing Arts in 1986. During that time, Cappello danced with the Philadelphia Civic Ballet, Ballet South of New Jersey, the New Jersey National Ballet, and Group Motion Multi- Media Dance Theatre. In Philadelphia, she studied with her mentor, Pat Thomas, as well as

Ruth Andrien, Alexei Yudenich, Barbara Sandonato, Judith Jamison, and many other leaders in the field. In recognition of her talent, she subsequently earned a full scholarship for study at Peridance and a similar scholarship at The Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance,

both in New York. In 1990, Cappello was one of only two Americans accepted for study at London's Royal Academy of Dancing, where she earned her certification to teach the Academy's internationally-recognized curriculum of dance. She has taught at the Philadelphia

Civic Ballet, The Children's Professional School in Connecticut, Villanova University, and Rutger's Camden College of Arts and Sciences. Returning to Philadelphia, she recently discussed career options in dance on a professional panel during Career Day at The University of the Arts School of Dance, and also completed a choreographic residency at Point Breeze

Performing Arts Center. She is particularly proud to be the founding director of The Professional

School in Turnersville, New Jersey, an institution unique for its orientation toward serious technique and concert dance, and for not participating in competitions.

Robert M. Greenberg, Doctor of Fine Arts, honoris causa

Robert M. Greenberg is president of R/GA Digital Studios, a bicoastal design and production company renowned for the creative integration of film, video, and computer-imaging techniques.

R/Greenberg Associates, the original design and production company, was founded in 1977 in a 400-square foot New York apartment, where Bob lived with his brother, Richard. Today, R/GA

Digital Studios occupies a combined 60,000 square feet at its New York and Hollywood locations, with 90,000 square feet of new York City "air rights" for future expansion. Self- described as "virtually unemployable" when he graduated from college, Greenberg went on to

become a pioneer in the creative integration of film, video and computer imaging techniques. He

has made an interdisciplinary approach to media design his life's work, and has been honored for his creativity with virtually every industry award, including the Cannes Lion, the Clio, and the Academy Award. Greenberg and his associates have designed and produced special effects for countless feature films, ranging from Woody Allen's Zelig and Purple Rose of Cairo, to Predator, Silence of the Lambs, In the Line of Fire, and many more. R/GA also gave us the airborne baby which opens The World According to Garp, the edgy credits of Seven, and the panoramic sweep through a well-appointed library which sets the tone for PBS's Masterpiece Theatre.

Marjorie Samoff, Doctor of Fine Arts, honoris causa Marjorie Samoff lived in France for 10 years, where she performed as an opera singer, founded a new music theater company, and published research on music and the music business. From her experiences at the Avignon Festival and her travels throughout Europe, she developed her ideas for the American Music Theater Festival, which she continues to serve as founding

Producing Director. In just 12 years since its inception, the AMTF has earned a national reputation for excellence as what Time magazine calls "America's leading showcase for new and innovative music theater." AMTF has mounted over 50 new music theater works; toured to

Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, and Broadway; sent its premiere productions to more than

60 cities worldwide, including London, Vienna, and Paris; opened 28 of its productions in New

York; and commercially recorded 14 of its productions on original CDs. In recognition of her work

and commitment, Samoff received the first Philadelphia Music Association's Hal Weissman Award for "exemplary and sustained service to the Philadelphia musical community." She was also honored by Women's Way for her artistic vision and leadership, and was selected as part of the American delegation in a US/Russian international conference of young leaders. She has served as a national panelist and oversight reviewer for the National Endowment for the Arts, and has served on the boards of several nonprofit organizations, including the Greater Philadel- phia Cultural Alliance. History of The University of the Arts

The University of the Arts has evolved from two century-old institutions: the Philadelphia College of Art and the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts.

The Philadelphia College of Art (PCA) was formed in 1876 along with the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Initially known as the Pennsylvania Museum and

School of Industrial Art, the institutions were established in response to the interest in art and art education that was stimulated by the country's Centennial Exposition. In 194^ the school became known as the Philadelphia Museum School of Art, reflecting the expanded programs that trained artists in many other areas, including fine arts. The school received accreditation in 1959, and in 1964 separated from the Museum to become the

Philadelphia College of Art. Today, the Philadelphia College of Art and Design of The University of the

Arts offers curricula in design, media arts, fine arts, crafts, and art education. A new college of media and communication is planned for 1997.

The performing arts programs of The University of the Arts date to 1870 when three graduates of the

Conservatory of Leipzig opened one of the first

European style conservatories of music in America: the Philadelphia Musical Academy. The Musical Academy became an independent college of music in 1 950, granting a Bachelor of Music degree after a four-year course of study—one of only eight such music colleges in the nation at the time. While still offering only a music program, the school changed its name to the Philadelphia College of Performing

Arts (PCPA) in 1976, the first such college in Pennsylvania. One year later the former Philadel- phia Dance Academy became part of PCPA, in

1 983 the School of Theater was created, thus achieving the college's ideal balance of performing arts: dance, music and theater arts.

In 1 985, PCA and PCPA joined to become the Philadelphia Colleges of the Arts, and a true visual and pertorming arts university was in its formative stages. With its inauguration in 1987, The Univer- sity of the Arts is the largest comprehensive educational institution of its kind in the nation, preparing students for professional careers in design, fine arts, crafts, dance, music, theater arts, and the expanding fields of new electronic media. 1870 Philadelphia Musical Academy founded Board of Trustees
