Eventually, he would lead the decisive battle in Santa Clara which terminated the Batista regime. Accordingly, the study looks most closely at the discursive and visual portrayals of the mambí, guerrilla soldiers of Cuba’s wars for independence (1868-98) and, not incidentally, icons of Cuban identity and revolutionary ethos. Within or relative to these very portrayals and the same wartime history, however, stands the specter of the reconcentrado, victims to Spain’s “camps of reconcentration” and by far the largest and most tragic casualties of the wars.

Richmond’s people to people delegation: How beautiful is Cuba! January 29, 2014 by Willie Thompson, Tarnel Abbott and Marilyn Langlois “Cuba is neither the hell that our enemies like to pretend it is nor the paradise that our friends wish it to be, but a country which struggles just like many others.” This is the assessment of our Cuban tour guide during the last day of our 10-day, 10-person people to people visit to Cuba in December 2013, led by the mayor of Richmond, California, Gayle McLaughlin. The Richmond delegation arrives. Welcome to Regla! – Photo courtesy of Tarnel Abott We were gratified by the hospitality extended to us in an atmosphere where, by and large, people do right by each other. As the popular national song declares, “Cuba que linda es Cuba!” “How beautiful is Cuba!” Regla The primary impetus for our trip was to visit Regla, Cuba, Richmond’s sister city since 1999. Regla is a municipality within Havana Province and, like Richmond, has a port, a refinery and a very diverse population that takes pride in its culture and history. The delegation was warmly welcomed by local officials at the Peoples’ Power Municipal Assembly of Regla. We gave medical supplies we had brought from the U.S. to Regla’s public health director, which was much appreciated because of shortages in some medicines due to the U.S. trade embargo. We learned that the refinery will be closed and relocated further away from a population center because of air pollution. The Afro-Cuban folkloric troupe Nsila Cheche performs in Regla.

NOTES ON THE CUBAN REVOLUTION Saul Landau I recall standing high on the tribune in the Plaza of the Revolution on January 2. 1961' just as I did twenty-eight years later and straining my neck unsuc- cessfully to see the end of the crowd. And Fidel. with five microphones, the number he still uses to ensure that his words will reach even the far end of the rally, denouncing the imperialists with the same fervour and some of the same language as he used on December 5.1988. So much in Cuba has changed in thirty revolutionary years. Fidel at 62 and gray in hair and beard no longer shows that spontaneous grin of wonder. The casinos, beggars, sex shows and aura of free and dirty third world capitalism remain only in the film archives, captured on celluloid. So much remains the same, not just the same as before the revolution, but the same as the 19th Century, and even before. Cuba is Spain and Africa, the old world and the new. It is U.S. gangsters and gamblers, baseball players and novelists. A little of Cuba is the Soviet Union, much of it is Caribbean and Latin American. It is culturally diverse and provincial. It is also. in Fidel's mind. the last bastion of socialism left in the world. The visitor sees the superficial, members of the Cuban militia - more than a million strong throughout the nation - fastidiously dressed, occupying the front position of the crowd. the crack troops. including the Special Forces marching by with precision movements.

During the Cold War, the United States and Soviet Union clashed in a series of proxy wars, especially in the developing nations of the Third World, including many decolonization struggles. Contents 1 Overview 2 Criticism 3 See also 4 Notes Overview After the 1959 triumph of the Cuban insurrection led by a militant "foco" under Fidel Castro, his Argentina-born, cosmopolitan and Marxist colleague Guevara parlayed his ideology and experiences into a model for emulation (and at times, direct military intervention) around the globe. While exporting one such "focalist" revolution to Bolivia, leading an armed vanguard party there in October 1967, Guevara was captured and executed, becoming a martyr to both the World Communist Movement and the New Left. His ideology promotes exporting revolution to any country whose leader is supported by the empire (United States) and has fallen out of favor with its citizens. Guevara talks about how constant guerrilla warfare taking place in non-urban areas can overcome leaders. He introduces three points that are representative of his ideology as a whole: that the people can win with proper organization against a nation's army; that the conditions that make a revolution possible can be put in place by the popular forces; and that the popular forces always have an advantage in a non urban setting.
