Edward T. Cone Concert Series Saturday, November 21, 2020 8:00 p.m. ET MATTHEW SHIPP PROGRAM THE PIANO EQUATION Matthew Shipp Funding for this concert is provided by the Edward T. Cone Endowment and a grant from the PNC Foundation. ABOUT THE MUSIC David Lang writes: Over the summer I asked Matthew Shipp if he would like to play for us the music from his recent recording The Piano Equation. This album came out towards the beginning of the pandemic and I found myself listening to it over and over—its unhurried wandering and unpredictable changes of pace and energy made it a welcome, thoughtful accompaniment to the lockdown. My official COVID soundtrack. Matthew agreed, but he warned me that what he would play might not sound too much like what I had heard on the recording. This music is improvised, which means that it is different every time. And of course, that is one of the reasons why I am interested in sharing it on our season. We have been grouping concerts under the broad heading of ‘virtuosity’–how music can be designed so that we watch and hear a musical problem being overcome, right before our eyes and ears. Improvisation is a virtuosity all its own, a virtuosity of imagination, of flexibility, of spontaneity.

  • John Tchicai Discography
JOHN TCHICAI DISCOGRAPHY Introduction This discography is the result of a special project following the preparation of the ”Danish Jazz Discography 1945-2000”. In the first phase John Tchicai did supply a lot of information on his recordings. However – because of the complications after he suffered a stroke in June 2012 – he did not see the final result. Edited by Erik Raben Please mail all corrections and comments to [email protected]. Content The Discography covers John Tchicai’s recordings 1962 – 2012. Available video recordings are also included. The Detailed Listing of Issues has information on the issues (LP/CD names etc.) – followed by the year of recording. An overview of some of the most relevant issues is found in the Selective Listing of Issues. LP/CD titles as well as the titles played are generally written with initial capital letters – except for titles in Scandinavian languages. It has to be remembered that this discography – like most other discographies – is not faultless! The above mentioned listings are separate .pdf documents and the Adobe search functions can therefore be used to locate specific musi- cians, issues etc. Instrumental abbreviations acc accordion hsc harpsichord alth alto horn keyb keyboards arr arranger ldr leader as alto saxophone mand mandolin b bass mar marimba barh baritone horn mcs maracas bars baritone saxophone mel mellophone band-vcl vocal by members of the band org organ bassax bass saxophone p piano bcl bass clarinet perc percussion bg bongo drum(s) picc piccolo flute bj banjo sax (unspecified)

Press Release Art & Language Letters to The Jackson Pollock Bar in the Style of The Red Krayola Featuring Matthew Jesse Jackson John Coxon and J. Spaceman Thursday, October 24, 2019 504 West 24th Street, New York Doors: 6pm Performances: 6.30 – 8.30pm RSVP required: [email protected] Lisson Gallery New York is pleased to present a night of performance, discussion and music inspired by the pioneering work of Art & Language and their 40-year collaboration with The Red Krayola, a punk band founded in Houston, Texas, by Mayo Thompson and Frederick Barthelme in 1966. The evening will also feature a discussion with Art & Language, hosted by art historian Matthew Jesse Jackson, as well as a newly commissioned homage to some of The Red Krayola’s earliest live shows, composed by musicians J. Spaceman (of Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized) and John Coxon (from Spring Heel Jack and the Treader label). After the conceptual art group known as Art & Language was formed in 1968 at Coventry College of Art in the UK, it quickly spread to New York where it centered on two important journals, Art-Language (1969-85) and then later The Fox (1975-76), by which time some 20 artists were connected in various ways with the name. It was around this time that an album entitled Corrected Slogans came out, marking the first collaboration between Art & Language in the UK and The Red Krayola, in which snippets and slogans from conceptual art theory and philosophical tracts were sung or chanted over music composed in response by Thompson’s band.

Dance music of the 1990s largely rejected the simple, jovial, hedonistic approach to body movement that had ruled since James Brown invented funk music in the 1960s. Disco, techno and house had simply imported new technologies (both for rhythm and arrangements) into the paradigm of funk. The 1990s continued that process, but further removing the "joy" of dancing from the beats, and, in fact, replacing it with fits of acute neurosis. One of the most important ideas to come out of Britain was "jungle" or "drum'n'bass", a syncopated, polyrhythmic and frantic variant of house, a fusion of hip-hop and techno that relied on extremely fast drum-machines, epileptic breakbeats and huge bass lines. Precursors of jungle included, in the USA, Bug In The Bassbin (1989), the rhythmic workout of Carl Craig's Innerzone Orchestra, and, in Britain, Perfecto's Baz De Conga (1989). The experiments of Plaid and Meat Beat Manifesto also laid the foundations of jungle. Jungle saw the light in 1992 in London with tracks such as Leakage Trip's Psychotronic, Nebula II's Flatliners and Johnny Jungle's Johnny, followed by Andy C's Valley Of The Shadows (1993) and Ed Rush's Bloodclot Attack (1993), while Omni Trio's Renegade Snares (1993) and especially LTJ Bukem's Music (1993) invented "ambient jungle" (a calmer, introverted version of that hyperkinetic dance music).

  • Matthew Shipp Joe Morris
Matthew Shipp With his unique and recognizable style, pianist Matthew Shipp worked and recorded vigorously during the 1990s, creating music in which free jazz and modern classical intertwine. He first became known in the early '90s as the pianist in the David S. Ware Quartet, and soon began leading his own dates -- most often including Ware bandmate and leading bassist William Parker -- and recording a number of duets with a variety of musicians, from the legendary Roscoe Mitchell to violinist Mat Maneri, who began appearing on recordings in the 1990s. Through his range of live and recorded performances and unswerving individual development, Shipp came to be regarded as a prolific and respected voice in creative music by the decade's close. Born in the 1960s and raised in Wilmington, DE, Shipp grew up around '50s jazz recordings. He began playing piano at the young age of five, and decided to focus on jazz by the time he was 12. Shipp played on a Fender Rhodes in rock bands while privately devouring recordings by a variety of jazz players. His first mentor was a man in his hometown named Sunyata, who had an enthusiasm for a variety of studies in addition to music. Shipp later studied music theory and improvisation under Clifford Brown's teacher Robert "Boisey" Lawrey, as well as classical piano and bass clarinet for the school band. After one year at the University of Delaware, Shipp left and took lessons with Dennis Sandole for a short time, after which he attended the New England Conservatory of Music for two years.
