MICHAEL MANTLER RECORDINGS COMMUNICATION FONTANA 881 011 THE JAZZ COMPOSER'S ORCHESTRA Steve Lacy (soprano saxophone) Jimmy Lyons (alto saxophone) Robin Kenyatta (alto saxophone) Ken Mcintyre (alto saxophone) Bob Carducci (tenor saxophone) Fred Pirtle (baritone saxophone) Mike Mantler (trumpet) Ray Codrington (trumpet) Roswell Rudd (trombone) Paul Bley (piano) Steve Swallow (bass) Kent Carter (bass) Barry Altschul (drums) recorded live, April 10, 1965, New York TITLES Day (Communications No.4) / Communications No.5 (album also includes Roast by Carla Bley) FROM THE ALBUM LINER NOTES The Jazz Composer's Orchestra was formed in the fall of 1964 in New York City as one of the eight groups of the Jazz Composer's Guild. Mike Mantler and Carla Bley, being the only two non-leader members of the Guild, had decided to organize an orchestra made up of musicians both inside and outside the Guild. This group, then known as the Jazz Composer's Guild Orchestra and consisting of eleven musicians, began rehearsals in the downtown loft of painter Mike Snow for its premiere performance at the Guild's Judson Hall series of concerts in December 1964. The orchestra, set up in a large circle in the center of the hall, played "Communications no.3" by Mike Mantler and "Roast" by Carla Bley. The concert was so successful musically that the leaders decided to continue to write for the group and to give performances at the Guild's new headquarters, a triangular studio on top of the Village Vanguard, called the Contemporary Center. In early March 1965 at the first of these concerts, which were presented in a workshop style, the group had been enlarged to fifteen musicians and the pieces played were "Radio" by Carla Bley and "Communications no.4" (subtitled "Day") by Mike Mantler. -

Lagaay Alice in Conversation with Geerken Hartmut
Lagaay Alice in conversa0on with Geerken Hartmut On the ethos – and ethnography – of 'creave indifference': discovering the philosophy of Salomo Friedlaender keynote lecture Bio: Hartmut Geerken is a free-jazz musician, composer, writer, publisher, author of radio plays, filmmaker and joyful prac==oner of crea=ve indifference. He lived and worked in Athens, Cairo and Kabul before seDling with his family on the shores of Ammersee in Southern Germany. Hartmut and his wife Sigi came across the wri=ngs of Salomo Friedlaender by chance in 1966, when they travelled to France to inves=gate the correspondence and other wriDen work by Victor Hadwiger, a German- speaking poet from Prague. This chance discovery led to a series of further encounters and a curious passion out of which a life=me’s project was born, leading to the compila=on and later publica=on – in their own ‘Waitawhile’ publishing house – of the collected wri=ngs of Salomo Friedlaender. Alice Lagaay is currently a research fellow in philosophy at the IKKM in Weimar (Bauhaus University). She is a founding member of the Performance Philosophy network, and co-editor (with Laura Cull O’Maoilearca and Will Daddario) of the Performance Philosophy book series published with Palgrave Macmillan. Her work in recent years has focused on no=ons of ‘nega=ve’ performance: silence, failure, leng-be, the neutral, (crea=ve) indifference, and the impossible. In 2013, while researching for an ar=cle she was wri=ng on the potency of the concept of the ‘neutral’ (that which is neither ‘this’ nor ‘that’), Alice stumbled upon a footnote in a book by William Watkin. -

The Piano Equation
Edward T. Cone Concert Series Saturday, November 21, 2020 8:00 p.m. ET MATTHEW SHIPP PROGRAM THE PIANO EQUATION Matthew Shipp Funding for this concert is provided by the Edward T. Cone Endowment and a grant from the PNC Foundation. ABOUT THE MUSIC David Lang writes: Over the summer I asked Matthew Shipp if he would like to play for us the music from his recent recording The Piano Equation. This album came out towards the beginning of the pandemic and I found myself listening to it over and over—its unhurried wandering and unpredictable changes of pace and energy made it a welcome, thoughtful accompaniment to the lockdown. My official COVID soundtrack. Matthew agreed, but he warned me that what he would play might not sound too much like what I had heard on the recording. This music is improvised, which means that it is different every time. And of course, that is one of the reasons why I am interested in sharing it on our season. We have been grouping concerts under the broad heading of ‘virtuosity’–how music can be designed so that we watch and hear a musical problem being overcome, right before our eyes and ears. Improvisation is a virtuosity all its own, a virtuosity of imagination, of flexibility, of spontaneity. -
John Tchicai Discography
JOHN TCHICAI DISCOGRAPHY Introduction This discography is the result of a special project following the preparation of the ”Danish Jazz Discography 1945-2000”. In the first phase John Tchicai did supply a lot of information on his recordings. However – because of the complications after he suffered a stroke in June 2012 – he did not see the final result. Edited by Erik Raben Please mail all corrections and comments to [email protected]. Content The Discography covers John Tchicai’s recordings 1962 – 2012. Available video recordings are also included. The Detailed Listing of Issues has information on the issues (LP/CD names etc.) – followed by the year of recording. An overview of some of the most relevant issues is found in the Selective Listing of Issues. LP/CD titles as well as the titles played are generally written with initial capital letters – except for titles in Scandinavian languages. It has to be remembered that this discography – like most other discographies – is not faultless! The above mentioned listings are separate .pdf documents and the Adobe search functions can therefore be used to locate specific musi- cians, issues etc. Instrumental abbreviations acc accordion hsc harpsichord alth alto horn keyb keyboards arr arranger ldr leader as alto saxophone mand mandolin b bass mar marimba barh baritone horn mcs maracas bars baritone saxophone mel mellophone band-vcl vocal by members of the band org organ bassax bass saxophone p piano bcl bass clarinet perc percussion bg bongo drum(s) picc piccolo flute bj banjo sax (unspecified) -

This series of events works with musicians and artists to develop an idea (or project), undertake research, capture a specific meeting of particular musicians and ultimately to explore the creative resource that is listening and the differences between the two predominant modes of making music: composition & improvisation. Experimental music and recording technology has undeniably influenced 20th and 21st century music making and developing a culture of listening to experimental music. Recording sessions intends to explore the interconnections among the aesthetics of Experimental Music and the aesthetics of sound recording with a focus on the act of Listening to research & explore our responses to music as it is experienced at live events (or when listening to recordings). Tom Chant, John Edwards, Eddie Prévost Trio Eddie created the trio in the spring of 1997 for a recording session that was to be used for their first disc “Touch.” This was followed in the year 2000 with “The Virtue In If” and 2003 with “The Blackbirds Whistle.” Their fourth disc, titled “All Change” was recorded beneath Waterloo Station in London in the summer of 2012. -

Ware • Kadima Collective • Event Calendar NEW YORK Despite the burgeoning reputations of other cities, New York still remains the jazz capital of the world, if only for sheer volume. A night in NYC is a month, if not more, anywhere else - an astonishing amount of music packed in its 305 square miles (Manhattan only 34 of those!). This is normal for the city but this month, there’s even more, seams bursting with amazing concerts. New York@Night Summer is traditionally festival season but never in recent memory have 4 there been so many happening all at once. We welcome back impresario George Interview: Mark Feldman Wein (Megaphone) and his annual celebration after a year’s absence, now (and by Sean Fitzell hopefully for a long time to come) sponsored by CareFusion and featuring the 6 70th Birthday Celebration of Herbie Hancock (On The Cover). Then there’s the Artist Feature: David S. Ware always-compelling Vision Festival, its 15th edition expanded this year to 11 days 7 by Martin Longley at 7 venues, including the groups of saxophonist David S. Ware (Artist Profile), drummer Muhammad Ali (Encore) and roster members of Kadima Collective On The Cover: Herbie Hancock (Label Spotlight). And based on the success of the WinterJazz Fest, a warmer 9 by Andrey Henkin edition, eerily titled the Undead Jazz Festival, invades the West Village for two days with dozens of bands June. -
