Faithful Transgressions.qxd 2/3/04 1:14 PM Page xi Preface Gender Trouble and My Hybrid Life The spectacle of a significant number of critics getting personal in their writing, while, not to be sure, on the order of a paradigm shift, is at least the sign of a turning point in the history of critical practices. —Nancy Miller, Getting Personal Nearly all who spoke to me expressed their surprise that intelli- gent men and women should be found in communion with the Mormon Church. How persons of education and refinement could ever have embraced a faith that prostrated them at the feet of the Mormon Prophet [Joseph Smith], and his successor Brigham Young, was to the enquiring mind a perfect mystery. —Fanny Stenhouse, Tell It All Since the official founding in 1830 of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, popularly known as the “Mormon Church,” Latter- day Saint (LDS) women have felt compelled on many occasions to explain and justify their religious beliefs. Throughout the late nine- teenth century in the United States, for example, Mormon women defended themselves at mass meetings and in writing against women social reformers who criticized or pitied Mormon women for practicing polygamy. Contemporary members of the mainstream LDS Church now contract only monogamous marriages, but many outsiders continue to criticize or patronize Latter-day Saint women for their allegiance to a patriarchal religion that valorizes motherhood and espouses strict reli- gious codes. As a Mormon woman myself—but one without a husband and children—I have sometimes felt the sting of outsiders’ criticism. From childhood, Mormon doctrine offered me the most explicit script for determining the “ideal” roles that women and men should per- form to achieve “ideal” family life: men provide and women stay home xi Faithful Transgressions.qxd 2/3/04 1:14 PM Page xii xii Faithful Transgressions in the American West with children. My own family, like many others, did not fit this ideal.

    Mormon Literature: Progress and Prospects By Eugene England This essay is the culmination of several attempts England made throughout his life to assess the state of Mormon literature and letters. The version below, a slightly revised and updated version of the one that appeared in David J. Whittaker, ed., Mormon Americana: A Guide to Sources and Collections in the United States (Provo, Utah: BYU Studies, 1995), 455–505, is the one that appeared in the tribute issue Irreantum published following England’s death. Originally published in: Irreantum 3, no. 3 (Autumn 2001): 67–93. This, the single most comprehensive essay on the history and theory of Mormon literature, first appeared in 1982 and has been republished and expanded several times in keeping up with developments in Mormon letters and Eugene England’s own thinking. Anyone seriously interested in LDS literature could not do better than to use this visionary and bibliographic essay as their curriculum. 1 ExpEctations MorMonisM hAs bEEn called a “new religious tradition,” in some respects as different from traditional Christianity as the religion of Jesus was from traditional Judaism. 2 its beginnings in appearances by God, Jesus Christ, and ancient prophets to Joseph smith and in the recovery of lost scriptures and the revelation of new ones; its dramatic history of persecution, a literal exodus to a promised land, and the build - ing of an impressive “empire” in the Great basin desert—all this has combined to make Mormons in some ways an ethnic people as well as a religious community. Mormon faith is grounded in literal theophanies, concrete historical experience, and tangible artifacts (including the book of Mormon, the irrigated fields of the Wasatch Front, and the great stone pioneer temples of Utah) in certain ways that make Mormons more like ancient Jews and early Christians and Muslims than, say, baptists or Lutherans.

I saw those who worship trees, stones, cows, mice, fire, money and other inanimate objects, and I saw those who do not believe in the existence of God or they do believe in the existence of God, but they say, “We do not know anything about him.” I liked to hear from each one his point of view about what he worships.

Brodie’s book, No Man Knows My History, the noted Mormon apologist Hugh Nibley declared: Yet of all churches in the world only this one has not found it necessary to readjust any part of its doctrine in the last hundred years. How does Brodie explain the fact that the doctrine which she claims was the haphazard outgrowth of complete opportunism remains the most stable on earth? (No Ma’am That’s Not History, 1946, pp. 46-47) Although most Mormons have always placed a great deal of weight in Dr. Nibley’s arguments, recent developments within the church itself will undoubtedly cause many to wonder about his claims concerning doctrinal stability. Woods LDS Church President Spencer W. Kimball has suggested that the word remember may be the most important word in the dictionary.1 This seems especially true with regard to centennial anniversaries. A reflective and joyful commemoration occurred on July 28, 2012, as hundreds of citizens of El Paso and Latter-day Saints came together to remember the compassionate acts rendered by El Pasoans a century ago when several thousand LDS men, women, and children fled Mexico and crossed the U.S. border to safety. These Mormon refugees were in great need, their lives uprooted and threatened due to the tumultuous events of the Mexican Revolution.2 The abruptness of the Mormon departure from Northern Mexico is apparent in the journal entries of John Walser, who lived in Colonia Juarez. In April 1912 he wrote: “My family are well, and we feel grateful to God for His great blessings, and protection over us. Colonia Juarez looks like a flower garden. The fruit trees all blossoming.” However,

In Jonah, the prophet is instructed to go to Nineveh “and preach against it.” However, instead of following God’s command, Jonah runs away from the Lord, fleeing in the opposite direction toward Tarshish. While he is aboard the ship to Tarshish, God sends a violent storm to threaten the ship.The crew, upon determining Jonah as the catalyst for the storm, throw him overboard. Immediately the sea becomes calm, and God sends a “great fish” to swallow Jonah whole, where he remains for three days and nights. There Jonah prays to the Lord and the fish expels him onto dry land. He at once heads to Nineveh to finally obey God’s command—and the Ninevites immediately repent and turn to the Lord. Seeing God’s compassion toward them, Jonah becomes angry and sulks away, prompting a rebuke from the Lord. In Malachi, we hear both God’s lamentation and indictment against post-exilic Israel. Though the temple had long been rebuilt and the people had long been established in the land after returning from exile, their commitment to faithfully live as God’s people began to wane—they had shown contempt for God’s name (1:6), offered false worship (1:7-14), led others into sin (2:7-9), broken God’s laws (2:11-16), called evil “good” (2:17), kept God’s tithes and offerings to themselves (3:8- 12), and became arrogant (3:13- 15).
