CONFESSIONS OF A BLACK FEMALE RAPPER: AN AUTOETHNOGRAPHIC STUDY ON NAVIGATING SELFHOOD AND THE MUSIC INDUSTRY by CHINWE MAPONYA-COOK Under the DireCtion of Jonathan Gayles, PhD ABSTRACT The following research explores the ways in whiCh a BlaCk female rapper navigates her selfhood and traditional expeCtations of the musiC industry. By examining four overarching themes in the literature review - Hip-Hop, raCe, gender and agency - the author used observations of prominent BlaCk female rappers spanning over five deCades, as well as personal experiences, to detail an autoethnographiC aCCount of self-development alongside pursuing a musiC career. MethodologiCally, the author wrote journal entries to detail her experiences, as well as wrote and performed an aCCompanying original mixtape entitled The Thesis (available on all streaming platforms), as a creative addition to the research. -

Within these specific speech communities, language is a vital part of constructing reality; of showing class values; and of defining who is ‘in’ and who is not - often in terms of being in opposition to and standing apart from mainstream society. Inclusion in the Hip-Hop and Country subcultures indicates a delineating boundary of authenticity, which clearly suggests that there are others who are therefore not ‘authentic’ and must be excluded. Members view their group as separate and work to maintain the boundary from the other, from the majority. In the sociolinguistic exploration of Hip-Hop and Country communities, there are five major themes that will be considered: Legitimacy, Commodification & Globalization, Boundary Margins, Sexuality, and Rebellion – giving prominence to the social context of language use rather than to purely lexical considerations within the two communities. -

The thesis is structured around critical femininity studies, Abstract This thesis sets out to examine the making of femininity in hip-hop, with a special focus on the performances of three artists - Mykki Blanco, Angel Haze, and Brooke Candy - and their representations made through music videos and lyrics. The thesis is structured around critical femininity studies, and created through a somatechnics perspective. I am investigating how femininity and the feminine body is made through and in relation to technology and different expressions of race, class, and sexuality. By questioning how structures of femininity is made and re-made through a somatechnical perspective, this thesis offers alternatives to interpret feminine representations in hip-hop, and bases its conversation in both culture studies and critical femininity studies. In the paper‘s conclusion, questions regarding active feminist resistance in hip-hop are raised, with hope to widen the discussions about female identified artists and their performances in this specific discourse. From Queen Latifah, Lauryn Hill and Rah Digga to Lil Kim and Nicki Minaj, women in hip hop embody the contemporary archetypes of Goddess Worship. Our High Priestess of the beat; the Female MC is archetypal and trance inducing. She reigns over and is beyond language. Staking her claim within the initially male dominated world of hip hop, she is becoming increasingly visible and taking many different forms. The work of artists Noelle Lorraine Williams and Marcia Jones underscores the parallels between hip hop - a holistic folk art born in the South Bronx in the 1970s amongst Black and Latino youth - and spiritual lineages outside the mainstream. Female MCʼs new to the scene, such as Angel Haze, and those associated with Brooklynʼs queer underground, including BONES and Cunt Mafia, have built on earlier foundations giving nuance and character to the voice of women in rap. For male and female artists alike, hip hopʼs reach now encircles the planet, staining the world with a transnational, spiritual swag; an honest speech aimed at power structures speaking truth to power that far exceeds its original local resonances. The nation language of hip hop, an earth-based wisdom vernacular, has many links to shamanist blending dialects from around the world. Like a “howl, or a shout, or a machine gun or the wind or a wave,” it is both contemporary and ancient.i Shamanism -- an umbrella term for a variety of spiritual practices involving dance, song, ritual and the imbibing of medicinal plants to achieve altered states of consciousness and access to the spirit world. -

“Fall for Your Type”: Opening up for Love in Angel Haze's
Two Sides to “Fall For Your Type”: Opening Up for Love In Angel Haze’s remix of Drake’s “Fall For Your Type,” Haze raps “Shakespeare couldn’t’ve wrote a better love.” Out of context, the listener might feel she is—perhaps a bit delusionally—bragging about the strength of her relationship. When we look at her song as a response to Drake, however, the line becomes meta—subtly bragging about the nuanced love story she crafts in her remix. These two versions together form a story of two emotionally damaged people—people with trust issues and confusions about their own desires—failing time and again to understand each other. Like many Shakespearean romances, this story is fraught with tragedy. While the original “Fall For Your Type” may seem shallow and even selfrighteous, Haze’s remix leads us to reconsider the merit of Drake’s song. We view his desire to rescue women as a product of low selfesteem instead of a messianic view of himself. Considered together, the two versions of “Fall For Your Type” ultimately promote a disillusioned view of love: Both people in a relationship must not only open themselves up, but also open their minds to each other’s complexity. In the original “Fall For Your Type,” we see a seemingly shallow protagonist that cannot understand why all his relationships fail. By viewing love through such narrow lens, Drake acts as the antithesis to how one should communicate. The language he uses in his lyrics reflects the narrowness of his vision: “with all that recognition/ It gets hard for you to listen to the things/ That I must say to make you mine.” Here, Drake constrains himself to a very conventional view on relationships; the “must say” implies that there exists some correct combination of words to win a woman’s heart.
