Regional Variation in West and East Coast African-American English Prosody and Rap Flows

However, little is known about AAE regional variation regarding prosodic rhythm and melody. In hip-hop music, regional variation can also be observed, with different regions’ rap performances being characterized by distinct “flows” (i.e., rhythmic and melodic delivery), an observation which has not been quantitatively investigated yet. This study concerns regional variation in AAE speech and rap, specifically regarding the United States’ East and West Coasts. It investigates how East Coast and West Coast AAE prosody are distinct, how East Coast and West Coast rap flows differ, and whether the two domains follow a similar pattern: more rhythmic and melodic variation on the West Coast compared to the East Coast for both speech and rap. -

TUULETAR Tules, Maas, Vedes, Taivaal (Fire, Earth, Water, Sky) (Bafe's Factory)
TUULETAR Tules, Maas, Vedes, Taivaal (Fire, Earth, Water, Sky) (Bafe's Factory) Among the most promising pop vocal groups in Finland and Scandinavia today—the modern girl-group sound of Tuuletar comes alive on their much anticipated first album Tules, Maas, Vedes, Taivaal. The eight song CD was superbly recorded and produced at Liquid 5th studios based in North Carolina. Visiting and performing in New York on the way back to Finland, Tuuletar can't wait to bring their “Folk-Hop” sound — accapella vocals all sung in their native Finnish—to the attention of music fans World Wide. The skillful production by the Liquid 5th team shines a bright light on Tuuletar’s phenomenal pop vocal approach. For music listeners challenged by the unusual complexities of the Finnish language, Tuuletar’s album title translates to “Fire, Earth, Water, Sky”, with each group member representing a different element or sign. At the core of the Tuuletar sound are four accomplished singers—Sini Koskelainen, Piia Säilynoja, Johanna Kyykoski and the band’s human Beat-Boxer / singer Venla Ilona Blom. With Venla supplying the percussive beat-boxing sounds, and the impressive production of Liquid 5th putting on the sheen, Tuuletar’s vocal arrangements are fully realized on their CD debut. Commenting on the unique Tuuletar sound in the following interview, Sini Koskelainen tells mwe3.com, “Beat-boxing is a form of vocal percussion primarily involving the art of mimicking drum machines using one’s mouth, lips, tongue and voice. The folk-hop sound blends Finnish folk music with hip-hop, electronic music and world music.” The perfect showcase for their unique talents as a group, the debut Tuuletar album is filled with appealing vocal harmonies yet the music is also quite experimental sounding. -

A Multi-Dimensional Study of the Emotion in Current Japanese Popular Music
Acoust. Sci. & Tech. 34, 3 (2013) #2013 The Acoustical Society of Japan PAPER A multi-dimensional study of the emotion in current Japanese popular music Ryo Yonedaà and Masashi Yamada Graduate School of Engineering, Kanazawa Institute of Technology, 7–1 Ohgigaoka, Nonoich, 921–8501 Japan ( Received 22 March 2012, Accepted for publication 5 September 2012 ) Abstract: Musical psychologists illustrated musical emotion with various numbers of dimensions ranging from two to eight. Most of them concentrated on classical music. Only a few researchers studied emotion in popular music, but the number of pieces they used was very small. In the present study, perceptual experiments were conducted using large sets of popular pieces. In Experiment 1, ten listeners rated musical emotion for 50 J-POP pieces using 17 SD scales. The results of factor analysis showed that the emotional space was constructed by three factors, ‘‘evaluation,’’ ‘‘potency’’ and ‘‘activity.’’ In Experiment 2, three musicians and eight non-musicians rated musical emotion for 169 popular pieces. The set of pieces included not only J-POP tunes but also Enka and western popular tunes. The listeners also rated the suitability for several listening situations. The results of factor analysis showed that the emotional space for the 169 pieces was spanned by the three factors, ‘‘evaluation,’’ ‘‘potency’’ and ‘‘activity,’’ again. The results of multiple-regression analyses suggested that the listeners like to listen to a ‘‘beautiful’’ tune with their lovers and a ‘‘powerful’’ and ‘‘active’’ tune in a situation where people were around them. Keywords: Musical emotion, Popular music, J-POP, Semantic differential method, Factor analysis PACS number: 43.75.Cd [doi:10.1250/ast.34.166] ‘‘activity’’ [3]. -
