I had thought of slot car related items, but I think this would not be appreciated by the receiving parties, well perhaps Ciaran would, but at the minute Fireman Sam is flavour of the month and currently Scalextric don’t do Fireman Sam and Ciaran hasn’t yet been introduced to Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker or even James Bond so some of the latest releases from Hornby may be lost on him at the moment. As for the girls, well if is isn’t pink they are not interested and Denise did say if ever I bought her a Scalextric car I would risk having to have it surgically removed. So gentlemen, I am left to ponder what to buy with no hints or offerings from those who are to receiver. I am sure I am not alone, so to any wives, girlfriends or perhaps children reading this now could you give us dads, husbands or boyfriends an idea, because I hate shopping on Christmas eve, much preferring to be in the pub! Until next month. Jeremy November 2012 1 By Pete Simpson mazing, it’s happened yet again: I go on a business trip to the USA and AScalextric deliver thirteen new models to the retailers! Despite Karen’s belief, I didn’t have them all on order but, to compound the postman’s workload, I had also purchased the 2012 R18 from N*n*o (and very nice it is too!). So, when I got home I was guided towards a parcel for me in the lounge, another in the study, one in the kitchen and one, just arrived, by the front door. This should have created a nice, will only be available from the on-line Scalextric healthy stock level at most retailers well in shop or by personal collection at, you guessed it, advance of the Christmas rush: might be a good the Visitors’ Centre and will be limited to 999 time to leave this article lying around for examples. Certainly a welcome addition to the road car, an Australian Ford, a Ford GT, a Lotus ranks of road going machinery: not everyone 49 and another version of the Dodge Charger. wants all their slot cars to be race replicas. True I’ll leave the Charger to last as I’ve had a bit of to the prototype it is front engined, thereby fun with mine which I’ve detailed below. permitting the installation of a full interior. For First in the list is a brilliant red Mercedes lovers of Mercedes, this is a must; it looks so SLR McLaren, C3355. An unannounced car much nicer than the archetypal silver of most for this year, it is a Visitors’ Centre release and versions of the marque, although not quite as radical as a BRG Ferrari! Sitting on the track it gives every indication that its McLaren- developed 5.4 litre supercharged V8 will➳ 2 provide all of its 617 bhp to power it well out of the reach of even Scalextric’s police cars with 124mph being reached in a mere 10.4 seconds. And that’s only part of the story: 190mph is achieved only 20 seconds later. The Australian car is another new moulding for 2012: the Ford XB Falcon GT of Moffat Ford Dealers as run in the Bathurst Hardie- Ferodo 1,000 in 1976, C3303. The car The Ford GT3, C3290, is that of Lambda illustrated in this year’s catalogue is not quite Performance as driven by Dane Kurt Thiim and how it will appear when released; whilst German Thomas Mutsch during the 2011 correctly described as the 1976 Bathurst car, the ADAC GT Masters Series. Looking at images of the Torana, C3214, released at the beginning of this car racing at Hockenheimring in October of year, either in analogue or, with an Easy Fit 2011, this model appears to be a good Digital Plug fitted, in full-on lane changing representation although the “Baufeld” sponsor format. decal on the door, as shown in the catalogue image, appears to be only on the left side of the car, the right side being blank: the car as released does not have this on either side. Of course, it could easily be the livery as raced at another round of the series. The vagaries of Wikipedia were highlighted when researching Thomas Mutsch as the content displayed on the German site is significantly different to that of the UK version. Whilst searching for information on this car I came across a superb resource centre for old motor racing photos: www.MotorsportArchive.com. Searching can be a bit tedious as images are credited, and arranged, by contributor but there is a huge wealth of interesting old race car images, many described and photographed at the time they were actually racing rather than November 2012 3 images of restored examples and the associated degree of uncertainty. • Founded in the Year Nineteen Twenty-Four March 1980
March 1980 MOTOR SPORT Founded in the year nineteen twenty-four offices would be possible is something to be discussed. The point is that two-tier control of motoring sport is vital and should take place quickly. Note that there is no suggestion whatsoever that the RAC, which controls British motoring sport with the approval of the Government, should be overthrown; only that it must be restrained from exploiting, knowingly or inadvertently, those Clubs and their hundreds of members which can less-well than the Big Battalions afford to pay ever- increasing permit and licensing fees. That the situation, in a world of galloping inflation and rising petrol costs, has become desperate, is evident when you realise that the Motor Cycling Club, the oldest sporting Motor Club in this country, which continues to organise its classic long-distance trials dating back to 1908, had to pay more in Ministry-of-Transport Authorisation-Fees to run last year’s Land’s End Trial than the RAC did to hold the sponsored International RAC Rally — something to do with the MCC having more entrants who cover a bigger mileage. It is understandable that the Forestry Commission has to charge for the alleged wear-and-tear that the MATTERS OF MOMENT passage of fast-moving rally cars cause to its forest tracks and for spectator protection (ropes and whistles), ■ EXPLOITATION IS A DIRTY WORD! but it is not clear to us why a Government Department should charge the MCC for competitions which use “Man’s rich with little, were his judgement true; public roads, with every competitor paying his or her Nature is frugal, and her wants are few; These few normal road-licence duty.

ACES WILD ACES WILD The Story of the British Grand Prix THE STORY OF THE Peter Miller Motor racing is one of the most 10. 3. BRITISH GRAND PRIX exacting and dangerous sports in the world today. And Grand Prix racing for Formula 1 single-seater cars is the RIX GREATS toughest of them all. The ultimate ambition of every racing driver since 1950, when the com petition was first introduced, has been to be crowned as 'World Cham pion'. In this, his fourth book, author Peter Miller looks into the back ground of just one of the annual qualifying rounds-the British Grand Prix-which go to make up the elusive title. Although by no means the oldest motor race on the English sporting calendar, the British Grand Prix has become recognised as an epic and invariably dramatic event, since its inception at Silverstone, Northants, on October 2nd, 1948. Since gaining World Championship status in May, 1950 — it was in fact the very first event in the Drivers' Championships of the W orld-this race has captured the interest not only of racing enthusiasts, LOONS but also of the man in the street. It has been said that the supreme test of the courage, skill and virtuosity of a Grand Prix driver is to w in the Monaco Grand Prix through the narrow streets of Monte Carlo and the German Grand Prix at the notorious Nürburgring. Both of these gruelling circuits cer tainly stretch a driver's reflexes to the limit and the winner of these classic events is assured of his rightful place in racing history.

! 1980 Tyrrell 010 Chassis No: 010/2 • A competitive and useable ground effect entry to the flourishing FIA Historic Formula One Championship, with a sister 010 taking six wins so far this season. • Raced for 11 Grand Prix in 1980 by Derek Daly with a 4th at the British Grand Prix. • Driven in 1981 by Ricardo Zunino and Eddie Cheever, with another 4th at the British Grand Prix for Cheever. • HSCC Historic Formula 1 Champion with Richard Peacock in 1989. • In the current ownership for the last 10 years, with minimal use. The Tyrrell Racing Organisation is a name that rings out with some of the all time Formula 1 greats, with three Formula 1 World Championships and one Constructors Championship to its name. It’s founder, Ken Tyrrell first came into racing in 1958 when he ran three Formula 3 cars for himself and a couple of local stars. Ken soon realised that he was not destined to be a racing driver and stood down from driving duties in 1959, instead to focus on running a Formula Junior team from a woodshed owned by his family business, Tyrrell Brothers. Tyrrell ran a variety of cars in the lower formulas through the 1960s, giving drivers like John Surtees, Jacky Ickx and most notably Jackie Stewart their single seater debuts. In 1968, Tyrrell’s involvement with Matra in Formula 2 was stepped up to the main stage of Formula 1, where Ken ran Matra International, a joint venture between Tyrrell and Matra. They had many wins with Stewart in the MS10 during ’68.
