ALPI It was 70 years ago, on August 2, 1945, when my father and Mr. NORD-EST2 Pitigliani established the Company in Prato, a textile center near Florence.     Archbishop says Berlin Wall was a Good Friday in German history BERLIN (CNS) — Catholics and Protestants gathered Aug. 13 to remember the day in 1961 when their city was divided, becoming a symbol of the Cold War. Catholic Archbishop Heiner Koch joined his Protestant counterpart, Bishop Christian Stäblein, for an ecumenical prayer service in the Chapel of Reconciliation, on the spot where part of the wall was built. Today, a few wall remnants still remain in a remembrance garden. Archbishop Koch reminded those gathered in the small chapel that without Good Friday, there would not have been a Resurrection on Easter. “Today we remember one of the Good Fridays in the history of Berlin and Germany. We have gathered at one of the many Golgotha mounds in our city and our country, directly at a monument that for many of us was a symbol of bondage and confinement, and which reminds us today of the preciousness of freedom,” he said. Archbishop Koch remembered how, as a young boy, he was on vacation with his parents in Italy when the wall went up. He recalled the anger and powerlessness of his parents and other adults as they watched, in disbelief, the images on television. It was his mother’s birthday, but no one was celebrating. Early on that Sunday morning in 1961, the Soviet sector border was sealed off when more than 10,000 East German security forces started to tear up the pavement in Berlin; they erected barricades and barbed wire fences. A few days later, the concrete slabs that would become the wall started to go up.

    Berliner Mauer und innerdeutsche Grenze Bestandsverzeichnis aus der Bibliothek der Bundesstiftung Aufarbeitung In der Nacht zum 13. August 1961 begann die Abriegelung der Grenze zu den Berliner Westsektoren durch das SED-Regime. Mit einem Großaufgebot an Einsatzkräften von Volks- und Grenzpolizei sowie Betriebskampfgruppen der SED wurden Verbindungs- straßen aufgerissen, Spanische Reiter und Stacheldrahtverhaue errichtet und der öffentliche Nahverkehr zwischen den beiden Stadtteilen dauerhaft unterbrochen. In den folgenden Tagen und Wochen wurden die provisorischen Stacheldrahtsperren unter scharfer Bewachung durch DDR-Grenzposten mit einer Mauer aus Hohlblock- steinen und Betonplatten ersetzt. Walter Ulbricht hatte sein Ziel erreicht. Der letzte noch offene Fluchtweg in den Westen war geschlossen und die bis dahin stetig wachsende Fluchtbewegung aus der DDR gestoppt. Die Berliner Mauer existierte über 28 Jahre lang und wurde zum Symbol für das menschenverachtende Regime in der DDR-Diktatur und zum Symbol der Deutschen Teilung und des Kalten Krieges. Die Mauer stand zudem für die Unerbittlichkeit eines Regimes, das auch vor Todesschüssen auf Flüchtlinge nicht zurückschreckte. Founded in the thirteenth century as Berlin-Cölln, the settlement occupied a major strategic position in what was known as the March of Brandenburg. Soon, it developed into the region’s leading trading and market town. In the early seventeenth century, Berlin was almost entirely destroyed in the Thirty Years War. Afterwards, Friedrich Wilhelm, Elector of Brandenburg and Duke of Prussia, revitalised the town to create a flourishing cultural and economic centre. The rulers who followed, later kings in and then of Prussia, developed the city as their royal residence. In 1871, with the founding of the German Empire, Berlin became the new capital, growing into a major metropolis with an international profile. In the Golden Twenties, the city’s many attractions and vibrant night life drew thousands of visitors, as did the first major trade fairs held here.

    DIE GEDENKSTÄTTE BERLINER MAUER „Die Mauer muss weg!“ hieß es nach der Grenzöffnung im November 1989. Wenig Verständnis gab es zunächst für For- derungen, Reste der Mauer als Mahnmal zu erhalten. However, the conscious use and presentation of historic built environments are factors that require more deliberate attention in historic soundscape analysis. The following paper presents a multimodal research methodology and promising preliminary results from a study at the Berlin Wall Memorial in Berlin, Germany. Here, the historic context from the Wall’s recent past is presented within the surroundings of the contemporary unified capital city. The study approached the past soundscape and present site by combining historic and current-conditions research, linking archival research, conditions assessments via binaural recording and psychoacoustics analysis tools, and soundscape surveys rooted in standardized soundscape research practices. In so doing, archival textual and pictorial sources provided a rich source of primary information integrated within the study and are suggested as a resource for similar inquiries elsewhere. The investigation identified concerns specific to heritage sites that require critical consideration for historic soundscape research of the recent past—survey-participant composition and the problematized use of typical descriptors in soundscape surveys are the two concerns that are discussed. Some standardized soundscape terminology and research methodologies were found to be insufficient in historic contexts. Initial qualitative results from the research are presented as a proof of concept for the research approach with signposts for future analysis and developments.

In order to track this voyage from the particular to the universal, I developed a theoretical concept of “global iconic events.” I define global iconic events as news events that are covered extensively and remembered ritually by international media. I suggest five narrative aspects to consider in connection with them: (1) their narrative prerequisites; (2) their elevated and interpretative story; (3) their condensation into a simple phrase, a short narrative, and a recognizable visual scene; (4) their competing stories; and (5) their ability to travel across multiple media platforms and changing social and political contexts. I perform textual analysis on media representations from four distinct national contexts (West German, East German, Hungarian, and American) to examine two case studies. With the help of the central case study, the “fall of the Berlin Wall,” I exhibit the successful social construction of a global iconic event. The second case study, the 1956 Hungarian revolution, illuminates some factors, in particular local counter-narration, incoherent and contextual international representation, forgetting, and marginality of the event’s location, as instrumental in the failure of an event to become a global iconic event.
