3ltt jMemortam Helmer Jallen of Fargo, North Dakota, one of the Upper Mid-West's most active horseshoe for more than 25 years, passed away on June 2. He was the holder of numerous trophies while pitching in the Fargo-Moorehead leagues and throughout North and South Dakota and Minnesota. He was stricken with a heart attack following two days after pitching practice at Oak Grove courts in Fargo. In 1976 he became a charter member of the North Dakota Horseshoe Hall of Fame, an honor he cherished. One of his biggest thrills came when he served an active role on the World Tournament committee for the 1967 tourney held in Fargo, North Dakota. Jallen appeared in the state tournament for more than 20 years as well as open tournaments at Fargo, Moorehead, Kindred, Sheldon, Hannaford, Cloquet, Duluth, St. Paul, Aberdeen, Bismark and other cities. An excellent sportsman, Jallen spent countless hours keeping score for players wishing to pitch qualifying scores at the Oak Grove courts. His wife, Manty, served as a scorekeeper in the Fargo League for many years. He is survived by his wife Manty and a son Paul of St. Paul, Minn. The sympathy of the Fargo-Moorehead club together with that of the National Association is extended in this, their hour of sadness. The Western Montan Association was saddened by the passing of Alex Roots of St. Regis, Montana. He was a staunch supporter of the game in Montana and travelled hundreds of miles to attend tournaments. His presence will be sorely missed in the Western Montana Circles. The sympathy of the Western Montana Association and that of the NHPA is extended to his wife and son in their hour of bereavement. The passing of Joe Dubie of Toccoa, Georgia and former pitcher and resident of Illinois many years ago is reported by his son Orville. He was 92 years old at the time of his death in June, after 10 days in the hospital. His first love was horseshoes and the many friends he made through the years. The highlight of his pitching activities was to attend the World Tournament each year wherever they were held. The sympathy of the Georgia State Association and of the Illinois Association and that of the National Association is extended to his bereaved family. The New York State Horseshoe Pitchers' Association was deepened sadly by the passing of Hilton Zehr. He was a member of the NE-OS-CO Club in Pulaski and also this year's director of the New York State Tournament. Hilt loved the game of horseshoes and participated in many local, state, and Canadian tournaments. He was a fine gentleman on and off the courts and gave a good account of himself pitching horseshoes. His soft and easy 1 VA turn was poetry in motion going through the air. The members of NE-OS-CO have lost a true horseshoer. Our condolences go out to his wife and all his loved ones.

HERFURTH IN REPEAT OF 1927 PERFORMANCE—WINS 50TH ANNIVERSARY CHAMPIONSHIP OF WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS As our story begins, we learn that Bernard Herfurth of Northampton, Mass. gained recogni- tion in tournament circles when at the age of 16 in 1927, he won the first Western Massachu- setts Championship that was played at Forest Park in Springfield, Mass. 50 years ago. On June 19 in West Springfield, Mass. he repeated the feat. As a TV sportscaster commented, "It's not a common accomplishment". Winning the title was not altogether easy as he encountered strong opposition in the final game when he played A1 Rousseau, last year's runnerup. After trailing Rousseau 32 to 13 in a 40 point game, Herfurth rallied to overtake his opponent and win the game and title 40 to 38. Ralph Forsstrom was the conductor of the tournament. This tournament was held as a Memorial Tournament to the late Tom Laurino who was an ardent pitcher and supporter of the game from the 1930's until his death in the 1960's.
