LEARN ABOUT YOUR THEATER: NURTURING NEW WORKS Northern Stage is committed to nurturing new works for the American stage in a myriad of ways, including our New Works Now new play festival, bringing world premieres to our main stage, transferring new plays to other theaters, and partnering with emerging playwrights to develop their work. Each year Northern Stage presents New Works Now. Over the course of one week, playwrights workshop new plays with professional actors and directors, culminating in a festival of free staged readings. New Works Now was designed to enrich the theater experiences of our audiences and artists. Inaugurated in January of 2014, the first festival attracted small audiences, but post-show responses proved that the Upper Valley was willing to engage with new work in a collaborative environment. Now our readings routinely fill the theater to capacity. We are honored to be part of a community that supports new works. Since 2014, Northern Stage has brought one world premiere play to every main stage season, many of which have gone on to other theaters, including three Off- Broadway transfers. Joe Sutton’s Orwell in America, part of the first New Works Now festival, enjoyed a fully-produced run in our 2014-15 Season and was Northern Stage’s first Off-Broadway transfer to 59E59 Theaters in 2016. Mad Love by Marisa Smith, also workshopped in 2014, enjoyed its world premiere in Northern Stage’s 2015-16 Season, followed by a run at New Jersey Repertory Company in the fall of 2016. Trick or Treat, by Jack Neary, was first presented in New Works Now 2016, then appeared on our main stage in the 2016-17 Season, and is currently enjoying a run at 59E59 Theaters (visit 59E59.org for tickets and more information). Only Yesterday, workshopped during New Works Now 2015, premiered on our main stage in the 2017-18 Season and will be transferring Off-Broadway this fall. This season, in addition to Venus Rising (originally workshopped in 2017 as She Exits, Laughing), our Youth Ensemble Studio will offer the world premiere musical, Pete(Her)Pan, Jr. in March. Northern Stage also offers support to local and emerging playwrights, assisting with the developmental process, facilitating small-scale workshops, and offering invited readings. Since 2014, Northern Stage has partnered with more than a dozen local and emerging playwrights to advance their work to the next level.

“I believe in the power of theater - to provoke, to educate, to entertain, to stimulate, and to engage. I have been blessed with many opportunities to experience all of these in theaters around the world, bequeathed to me by others. A legacy gift to Northern Stage is how I hope to ‘pay forward’ the great gifts of theater that have been given to me.” – Bob Wetzel
