Martin Scorsese Nasce a New York Il 17 Novembre 1942 Martin Scorsese nasce a New York il 17 novembre 1942. Martin Scorsese is born in New York on November 17th, 1942. Grown up in a devotely catholic community, he starts studying to enter priesthood before changing his mind and enrolling in cinematographic school of the New York Uni- versity, where he directs and produces his first short films. His debut in feature-length film is in 1969 with “Who’s that Knocking at My Door?”, a dramatic movie starring Harvey Keitel. But in this period Scorsese isn’t involved in direction only: in fact he starts teaching cinematography at the New York University – among his students we can remember Oliver Stone and Jonathan Kaplan – and releases the documentary “Street Scenes” (1970), realized by himself. Left New York toward Hollywood, in 1972 directs “Boxcar Bertha”, starring Barbara Hershey and David Carradine, produced by Roger Corman’s American International Pictures. The action is set during the Great Depression. His poetry peculiar elements – antiheroes and outcasts as main characters, New York and Little Italy settings, coex- istence of opposite elements such as religion and gangster life – start appearing just in the following movie, “Mean Streets” (1973), film which also marks the beginning of the prolific collaboration with Robert De Niro. Of the same setting is “Italianamerican”, a documentary that the director shoots one year later, one of his works he loves more: among the immigrants of New York’s Little Italy, we can recognize his parents. In 1974 Ellen Burstyn, protagonist of “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore”, wins the Best Actress Oscar, and Diane Ladd gets a nomination for the Best Actress in a supporting role Oscar. These awards seems to be a prelude to the Cannes’ Gold Palm won by Scorsese in 1976 for “Taxi Driver”, first of a long series of masterpieces, the dramatic history of a Vietnam veteran who reacts with violence against metropolitan life alienations. Protagonist is once again Robert De Niro, the actor who, more than any other, shares his career with the New Yorker director’s one. After “Mean Streets” and “Taxi Driver” they will be together in many other movies: “New York, New York” (1977) – for the occasion De Niro plays together with Liza Minnelli; “Raging Bull” (1980), dramatic biography in black and white of the fighter Jake La Motta, to play whom the actor put on lot of weight and wins the Oscar for Best Actor; “The King of Comedy” (1983), also starring an unusual Jerry Lewis in a dramatic role; “Goodfellas” (1990), a gangster-movie set in the New York criminal underworld, which gives Joe Pesci the chance to win the Best Actor in a supporting role Oscar; “Cape Fear” (1991), excellent remake of Lee J. Thompson’s movie (1962) starring Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum who play two cameos also in Scorsese’s film, while in the other leading roles we can see Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange and Juliette Lewis; “Casinò” (1995), about criminal gangs and gambling houses in Las Vegas during Thirties, with Sharon Stone as beautiful co-protagonist. Obviously Scorsese’s masterpieces aren’t just the ones in collaboration with the italian-american actor. “After Hours” (1985), Best Direction award in Cannes, is a comedy about nocturnal peregrinations, half Kafka and half Hitchcock. “The Color of Money” (1986) is a story set in billiards and illegal betting world, where the “hustler” Paul Newman becomes the teacher of promising Tom Cruise. Of another genre is Scorsese’s screenplay adaptation of a book by Nikos Kazantzakis, “The Last Temptation of Christ” (1988): performed by Willem Dafoe, the movie raises, especially inside catholic community, a chorus of complains and boycott threat because of the exaggerated secularization of Christ character. Another course changing is marked by “The Age of Innocence” (1993): taken from an Edith Warthon novel, tells a sentimental story set in the 1870’s New York, between decaying nobility and emerging middle class, with costumes and scenography (Dante Ferretti) worthy of the best Visconti.

But as empty gestures go, it is one of the best.” and, • “When I was in school, I cheated on my metaphysics exam: I looked into the soul of the boy sitting next to me.” all have in common?
