"Travellers heading north on the Stuart Highway between Coober Pedy and Cadney Park had been mentioning a dog at the roadstop for a couple of weeks", said Mark Bzowy Leasee of Cadney Park Homestead.“ "There are a few station dogs crossed with dingoes around this way so at first I thought it was a feral being friendly. After we kept hearing about it I decided to contact the District Council of Coober Pedy to try and get some help as we have no chance here of finding any owner." "It really isn’t in their jurisdiction and they were operating on a smaller crew of staff at that time. It was out of sheer humaneness that the Coober Pedy Council Works Department sent a crew up to rescue the dog," said Mark. Coober Pedy’s two local heroes, James Michie and Denis Markovic from the DCCP went on two 400k round trips to try and catch the dog which had miraculously survived some of the Far North’s most extreme temperatures. Once caught, the dog was found to be wearing a collar and tag that belonged to an address in Coober Pedy, although the owner was not in town at the time and was uncontactable. Currently the attractive, brindle kelpie cross is being housed at the Council Dog Pound, courtesy of the Coober Pedy ratepayers until such time as it’s owner claims him, or his Coober Pedy Regional Times future is determined. For generations, miners have dug into the white and orange rock to extract the valuable, sparkling stone. The tunnels and chambers they dug were cool and dark, perfect to escape from the desert sun. Coober Pedy ‘evolved’ as the result of a massive post war Opal Rush where hardy pioneers developed a make or break gem industry in the desert terrain.
