"Travellers heading north on the Stuart Highway between Coober Pedy and Cadney Park had been mentioning a dog at the roadstop for a couple of weeks", said Mark Bzowy Leasee of Cadney Park Homestead.“

"There are a few station dogs crossed with dingoes around this way so at first I thought it was a feral being friendly. After we kept hearing about it I decided to contact the District Council of Coober Pedy to try and get some help as we have no chance here of finding any owner."

"It really isn’t in their jurisdiction and they were operating on a smaller crew of staff at that time. It was out of sheer humaneness that the Coober Pedy Council Works Department sent a crew up to rescue the dog," said Mark.

Coober Pedy’s two local heroes, James Michie and Denis Markovic from the DCCP went on two 400k round trips to try and catch the dog which had miraculously survived some of the Far North’s most extreme temperatures. Once caught, the dog was found to be wearing a collar and tag that belonged to an address in Coober Pedy, although the owner was not in town at the time and was uncontactable.

Currently the attractive, brindle kelpie cross is being housed at the Council Dog Pound, courtesy of the Coober Pedy ratepayers until such time as it’s owner claims him, or his Coober Pedy Regional Times future is determined.

Experience life in the outback town of Coober Pedy, famous for its fabulous opals and bizarre underground homes. For generations, miners have dug into the white and orange rock to extract the valuable, sparkling stone. The tunnels and chambers they dug were cool and dark, perfect to escape from the desert sun.

Coober Pedy ‘evolved’ as the result of a massive post war Opal Rush where hardy pioneers developed a make or break gem industry in the desert terrain.

See the extravagantly built UNDERGROUND SERBIAN CHURCH with it’s magnificent stained glass windows and carvings.

Visitors can stay overnight and experience underground life as the locals know it!

The heat wave, like all extreme weather events, had its direct cause in a complex set of atmospheric conditions that produce short-term weather. However, weather occurs within the broader context of the climate, and there’s a high level of agreement among scientists that global warming has made it more likely that heat waves and wildfires of this magnitude will occur. http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/NaturalHazards/ Alphabetical list including Australia at http://berkeleyearth.lbl.gov/country-list/ view.php?id=80252&src=nha Coober Pedy Dugouts made Hottest town in Australia heat wave bearable “takes one day at a time”

Exactly 12 months ago, a stunned Coober Pedy community gathered together to pay their final respects to everyone’s mate Dave Matters, aged 50 who tragically lost his life. (CPRT Thursday 16 February 2012)

Dave’s untimely death on Tuesday 31st January 2012 brought with it a great wave of sadness to the town.

Friends who were closest to Dave continue to come to terms with their loss and wonder if, being here at the time, might have made a difference. Shane McDonald was staying at Dave’s place just prior to Christmas, but for personal reasons had gone to Perth. which is where he heard the dreadful news.

“I was shocked, devastated and so far away. I still wonder to this day, if it might have been different had I been there. Not a day goes by when his friends don’t miss him and think of some of his funny quips,” said Shane.”

“Since the car accident that Dave was involved in 15 years ago where he sustained serious head injuries, things were much harder for Dave,” another friend Shelley recalls.

Shane remembers their first meeting when Dave first came to Coober Pedy. “Dave had set up his mechanical business in the workshop behind the BP garage to see if Coober Pedy might suit him”, he said.

“I was at the Opal Inn one night, playing Keno with one of Remembering Dave Matters (2005) my mates Sonny Lee, who is now an ex-Coober Pedian. Sonny and I got lucky and won some money. Dave was sitting at the same table so I bought him a beer. We started talking, and about 20 beers later we all went back to “A Frame” (Diamond Johns) and partied till the early hours of the morning until Dave ventured on home, only to more or less go straight to work,” said Shane.

From that point on Shane and Dave became best mates. Later Dave, Shane and Gus (Trevor Gutheridge ) started the “Get a Grip” Mining Company together, which lasted for several years.

Over Time Tina worked across many local Health and Social Services where she became more involved in the community and joined several local volunteer committees. Currently Tina is active in Community groups like the local Drive In, Coober Pedy Multicultural Community Forum and our local St Vincent de Paul Society to name a few.

Growing up in the small Adelaide hills township of Kersbrook, the need to get things done by volunteer community members was second nature to her as she followed the example her parents set as they were always on committees to improve that community. Thus to be awarded Coober Pedy’s Citizen of the Year award at the Australia Day Celebrations’ was an unexpected honour which Tina was not expecting and was overwhelmed with emotion at the presentation.

Tina said, “I am honoured to receive this award and thankful to those who nominated and confirmed the nomination.”

Tina believes it is important that people see that their time spent assisting their community is appreciated; be it in their work or volunteering or whatever way they contribute to our community, it proves individuals can contribute and make a difference to our Coober Pedy Lifestyle.
