CONDEMNATION OF COMMUNISM IN PONTIFICAL MAGISTERIUM since Pius IX till Paul VI Petru CIOBANU Abstract: The present article, based on several magisterial documents, illus- trates the approach of Roman Pontiffs, beginning with Pius IX and ending with Paul VI, with regard to what used to be called „red plague”, i.e. communism. The article analyses one by one various encyclical letters, apostolic letters, speeches and radio messages in which Roman Pontiffs condemned socialist theories, either explicitly or implicitly. Keywords: Magisterium, Pope, communism, socialism, marxism, Christianity, encyclical letter, apostolic letter, collectivism, atheism, materialism. Introduction And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born. These words, written over 2.000 years ago, didn’t lose their value along time, since then and till now, reflecting the destiny of Christian Church and Christians – „those who guard the God words and have the Jesus tes- timony” – in the world, where appear so many „dragons” that have the aim to persecute Jesus Christ followers. -

The Message of Fatima 100th Anniversary – 2017 1914-Apparition At 7 years old I (Lucia) began tending our flock of sheep. One day as we (Lucia & some friends) saw for the 1st time a figure that had a human shape, whiter than snow and which the sun turned transparent. This apparition recurred twice again without manifesting itself and always suspended in the air, over the wood at the bottom of the “Cabezo.” When questioned by her mother, “As I did not know how to explain clearly and to free myself from questions, I replied that it looked like someone wrapped in a very white sheet.” 1st 1916 Apparition of the Angel After quickly praying the rosary Lucia dos Santos with cousins Francisco & Jacinta Marto started to play a game. “We were feeding our flocks in a property belonging to my parents called “Chousa Velha,” which lies at the bottom of a hill called “Cabezo,” on the east side. It was there that the Angel appeared to us for the 1st time in the form of a youth, as white as snow, shining more brightly then the sun and as transparent as crystal. We began to see this light coming towards us and thus we gradually distinguished the features. We were taken by surprise and being half bewildered we did not say a word. On reaching us he said, “Don’t be afraid. I am the Angel of Peace. Pray with me!” And kneeling down, he bowed his forehead to the ground and made us repeat these words three times: My God, I believe, I adore, I hope and I love Thee! I beg pardon of You for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope and do not love You.” “Pray thus. -

Ad Caeli Reginam accepted so that with the encyclical Ad Caeli Reginam, of October 11, 1954, Pope Pius XII instituted the feast of the Queenship of Mary.[2] 2 Basic teachings According to Catholic teaching Mary should be called Queen, not only because of her divine motherhood of Je- sus Christ, but also because God has willed her to have an exceptional role in the work of salvation. Mary was cho- sen as Mother of Christ in order that she might become a partner in the redemption of the human race: “As Christ, the new Adam must be called a King not merely because He is Son of God, but also because He is our Redeemer, so, analogously, the Most Blessed Virgin is queen not only because she is Mother of God, but also because, as the new Eve, she was associated with the new Adam.”[3] 3 Context The Church has always taught that Mary is far above all other creatures in dignity, and after her Son possesses pri- macy over all. Fatima and the Holy Father In this evening’s talk on Fatima and the Holy Father, I am going to cover both the Pope in the message of Fatima and the history of the Popes’ response to the Fatima message from 1917 to the present, ending with insights from Pope Benedict XVI’s recent visit to Fatima. Reference to the Holy Father occurs at least four times in the “secret” revealed to the seers on July 13, 1917 …We then looked up at Our Lady, who said to us so kindly and so sadly: “You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. To save them, God wishes to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If what I say to you is done, many souls will be saved and there will be peace. The war is going to end: but if people do not cease offending God, a worse one will break out during the Pontificate of Pius XI. When you see a night illumined by an unknown light, know that this is the great sign given you by God that he is about to punish the world for its crimes, by means of war, famine, and persecutions of the Church and of the Holy Father. To prevent this, I shall come to ask for the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart and the Communion of reparation on the First Saturdays. If my requests are heeded, Russia will be converted, and there will be peace; if not, she will spread her errors throughout the world, causing wars and persecutions of the Church. -

ABOUT THE AUTHOR A graduate of Eugene Coyle High School in St. Louis, Missouri, Father Ralph J. Doorack, S.M., attended the Marianist Novitiate in Galesville, Wisconsin, before going to the University of Dayton where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Teaching assignments followed in Marianist schools in Chicago, and East Saint Louis, Illinois. He entered the International Marianist Seminary, Regina Mundi, at Fribourg, Switzerland, in 1956, and was ordained to the holy priesthood in July, 1959. After completing his seminary, he continued his studies in theology at the General Administration of the Society of Mary in Rome. The present article, "The Nature of Mary's Influence in the Distribution of Grace," is taken from the International Marianist Seminary journal, Etudes Marianistes 3 (1960), 2-16, and represents a serious attempt to justify the physical cooperation in the distribution of graces claimed for Mary by a number of eminent theologians. Christian Brugger Frontmatter More Information catholic social teaching Catholic Social Teaching (CST) refers to the corpus of authoritative ecclesiastical teaching, usually in the form of papal encyclicals, on social matters, beginning with Pope Leo XIII’s Rerum Novarum (1891) and running through Pope Francis. CST is not a social science and its texts are not pragmatic primers for social activists. It is a normative exercise of Church teaching, a kind of comprehensive applied – although far from systematic – social moral theology. This volume is a scholarly engagement with this 130-year-old documentary tradition. Its twenty-three essays aim to provide a constructive, historically sophisticated, critical exegesis of all the major (and some of the minor) documents of CST. The volume’s appeal is not limited to Catholics, or even just to those who embrace, or who are seriously interested in, Christianity. Its appeal is to any scholar interested in the history or content of modern CST. Gerard V. Bradley is Professor of Law at the University of Notre Dame. He has been a Visiting Professor of Politics at Princeton University, a Fellow of the Hoover Institution at Stanford, and is currently a Senior Fellow of the Witherspoon Institute. At Notre Dame he is Co-Editor-in-Chief of The American Journal of Jurisprudence and serves as Co-Director of the Natural Law Institute. E. The Immaculate Heart of Mary in the Theology of Reparation Arthur Burton Calkins I. Introduction One can never speak of the Immaculate Heart of Mary without direct reference to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus because these two persons, one divine and one human, of whom their Two Hearts are symbols, were from all eternity united in the mind of God. Blessed Pope Pius IX declared this solemnly in the Bull Ineffabilis Deus in which he proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception when he stated that God by one and the same decree, had established the origin of Mary and the Incarnation of Divine Wisdom [ad illius Virginis primordia transferre, quæ uno eodemque decreto cum divinæ Sapientiæ incarnatione fuerant præstituta.]1 Precisely because these two persons are not equal we cannot speak of them in exactly the same way and yet they are not entirely different. Thus, we must speak of them in terms of the principal of analogy or “likeness in difference” and then the analogy between the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. I trust that this necessary preliminary treatment will prove to be of value in the end. II. The Principal of Analogy Analogy, in the classical sense in which this term is used by St. Thomas Aquinas and his followers, denotes “a kind of predication midway between univocation and equivocation.” 2 Here is the Angelic Doctor’s own description of what he meant by analogous predication: It is evident that terms which are used in this way [i.e. analogically] are intermediate between univocal and equivocal terms. -

Nesta parte teológica analiza-se a natureza da consagra- ção. É Deus quem consagra o homem, como se pode verificar no Antigo e no Novo Testamento e continua a realizar-se na Igreja, principalmente através dos sacramentos do Batismo, da Confir- mação e da Ordem. O homem responde a esta graça principal- mente pela fé, mas também e duma forma mais perfeita, nos con- selhos evangélicos e por atos de “devoção” (devotio), aos quais pertencem as consagrações. Pode haver também consagrações a criaturas, isto é, aos “San- tos de Deus”, pois, segundo S. Tomás de Aquino, uma tal consa- gração (devotio) não termina nas criaturas mas passa para Deus. Assim foi entendida, desde a Patrística até o Magistero atual, a consagração a Maria. O mesmo vale, analogamente, para uma consagração aos santos Anjos. A sua relação ao Batismo e aos conselhos evangélicos mostra o objetivo e a essência duma con- sagração aos santos Anjos: ela é uma aliança com eles, na qual o homem se compromete e se esforça por agir em tudo como e com os santos Anjos, cooperando pela vinda do reino de Deus, para ser mais perfeitamente unido a Cristo e tornar-se mais se- melhante a Ele. * * * I.
