Mark Cuban Hit with Massive Fine Over Comments Mark Cuban Hit with Massive Fine Over Comments David Diaz, Senior Executive, Davenport Laroche Mark Cuban, billionaire owner of the Dallas Mavericks and one of several “sharks” on the popular TV show “Shark Tank,” is not known for mincing words. Cuban has a habit of telling it like he sees it, and that has earned him millions of fans … it’s also cut some sizeable chunks out of his very big bank account. And it happened again recently. The National Basketball Association (NBA) has fined Cuban for remarks he made during a podcast interview with NBA Hall of Famer Julius Erving. In that interview, Cuban quipped: “I’m probably not supposed to say this, but I just had dinner with a bunch of our guys the other night… And here we are. We weren’t competing for the playoffs. I was like, ‘Look, losing is our best option.’” Cuban said the context of his remarks was frustration that his team had fallen from among the best in the league and couldn’t seem to claw its way back to those heights, when, not that long ago, the Mavs were fighting for a Western Conference Title nearly every season. That explanation was not good enough for NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, who called Cuban’s comments “detrimental to the NBA” before dropping a massive $600,000 fine on Cuban for the off-the-cuff remarks. Cuban defended the comments, saying they were included in an “honest talk” with certain players about what was best for their team at this point in what has been a disappointing season so far. The Mavs have made some moves in recent years, trading big- name players Andrew Bogut and Deron Williams, but they haven’t been able to restock with talent in the draft. Lose a lot, and you can improve your draft status, helping your team in the long run. So, in principle, Cuban was right. With the current way the NBA draft lottery is set up, it’s generally better to be terrible than to be mediocre. Privately, Silver might admit what Cuban said was accurate, and that the conversation Cuban had with his players, about their off-season plans to build the team, was forthright talk from of a conscientious owner… again, privately… Silver can’t allow those comments to hit the headlines on All-Star Weekend. Later, Cuban would apologize, at least indirectly, through Dallas head coach Rick Carlisle, who said Cuban was “embarrassed” by his comments. However, that won’t stop Cuban, or his comments, from motivating fans to choose sides. And Dallas fans will definitely choose sides on this issue. After all, the team isn’t giving them much to cheer about, as they are in the league cellar among teams with the fewest wins. So, at this point, any talk of getting better is likely to be well-received. But giving up? Some die-hard fans won’t want to hear that. Even from their notoriously honest owner. ..

Jason Kidd's path from future Hall of Fame point guard to unproven coach of the Brooklyn Nets didn't begin with his 10 All-Star appearances or his 2011 title with the Mavericks. It started with a notebook. "It was something I started during my second time in Dallas," said Kidd, who played for the Mavericks from 1994-96 and 2008-12. "After a game, I would write about different situations and how different coaches handled things. Our coach at the time was Rick Carlisle, and the notebook [which later morphed into a smart phone] was about what kinds of things he did that I agreed with, disagreed with, and what worked for him and what didn't. It also detailed what our opponent's coach might be doing. So I took notes with the idea of, If I was ever in that situation how would I handle it? What would I do? "There was one game at Golden State where we were on a 20-0 run and they took a timeout. They come out and go on a 4-0 run, and our coach calls a timeout. You could feel the air come out of us; you could feel the momentum swinging toward them because of the timeout.

  • Utah Jazz Draft Ex-CU Buff Alec Burks
Page 1 of 2 Utah Jazz draft Ex-CU Buff Alec Burks Guard taken 12th to end up a lottery pick By Ryan Thorburn Camera Sports Writer Boulder Daily Camera Posted:06/23/2011 06:57:18 PM MDT Alec Burks doesn't need 140 characters to describe the journey. Wheels up. ... Milwaukee. ... Tired. ... Sacramento. ... Airport life. ... Charlotte. ... Dummy tired. ... Phoenix. ... Thankful for another day. These are some of the simple messages the former Colorado guard sent via Twitter to keep his followers up to date with the journey from Colorado to the NBA. After finishing the spring semester at CU in May, Burks worked out for seven different teams. The Utah Jazz, the last team Burks auditioned for, selected the 6-foot-6 shooting guard with the No. 12 pick. Hoops dream realized. "It was exciting," Burks said during a teleconference from the the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. not long after shaking NBA commissioner David Stern's hand and posing for photos in a new three-piece suit and Jazz cap. "I'm glad they picked me." A lot of draftniks predicted Jimmer Fredette and the Jazz would make beautiful music together, but the BYU star was taken by Milwaukee at No. 10 -- the frequently forecasted landing spot for Burks -- and then traded to Sacramento. "I don't really believe in the mock drafts," Burks said. "They don't really know what's going to happen. I'm just glad to be in the lottery." Burks, who doesn't turn 20 until next month, agonized over the decision whether to remain in college or turn professional throughout a dazzling sophomore season in Boulder.

4/3/2021 Blockchain, Bitcoin and NFTs are the risky 'next generation of value creation' in sports – The Athletic Blockchain, crypto and NFTs are the risky ‘next generation of value creation’ in sports By Bill Shea (/author/bill-shea/) Mar 30, 2021 135 Joining terms such as Wins Above Replacement and Player Efficiency Rating in the sports lexicon are phrases such as non-fungible token (NFT), blockchain and cryptocurrency. The language of Silicon Valley entered the sports industry this year on the back of the white- hot sports collectibles market (https://theathletic.com/2428346/2021/03/05/sports-cards- tom-brady-luka-doncic-andre-the-giant/) because of the enormous sums of money involved. Why? Simple: In an era with little or no in-game fan revenue because of pandemic health- safety protocols, concepts such as NFTs and blockchain are viewed by leagues, teams, owners and athletes as opportunities to make more money. https://theathletic.com/2484646/2021/03/30/bitcoin-crypto-nfts-ethereum-sports-business/ 1/45 4/3/2021 Blockchain, Bitcoin and NFTs are the risky 'next generation of value creation' in sports – The Athletic Fans can expect to see a growing wave of NFT promotions — would you value a bobblehead that exists solely on your iPhone? — and the possibility that future re-sale of tickets will occur on a blockchain that allows the team to get another cut of money. While the technology has been around for years, it’s only in the past couple of months that it’s widely entered both sports and the broader national culture.
