SPORTS BUSINESS CLASSROOM 25 OPERATIONS CURRICULUM

This GE-only topic gives students insight into the inner workings of an NBA front office. We start with a 360˚ view inside a front office, and then we delve into two major topics of NBA business – establishing value in the draft, and putting trades together.

OPERATIONS 101: INSIDE THE FRONT OFFICE Instructor: Wes Wilcox

An inside look at how an NBA front office works – leadership, resources, departments, roles & responsibilities; player evaluation, and the various areas of focus during each part of the year.

OPERATIONS 201: DRAFT CAPITAL Instructor: Eric Pincus and Dan Purcell

Draft Capital is a new term but it represents enormous value in today’s league. We will walk you through an overview and examples that will help you understand what it all means. We’ll also break down the various teams with major draft capital and how they may exercise their options during trades and the draft.

OPERATIONS 301: THE TRADE MARKET Instructor: Eric Pincus and Brian Pauga

How trades are put together, from teams’ running lists of potential targets, through outreach, negotiation, agreement, and the trade call. Emphasis on how trade equity is established.

This hands-on exercise has been a highlight of SBC since its inaugural year. Every year we expand and

SPORTS BUSINESS CLASSROOM 26 TERM PROJECT

improve it, and this year is no exception. This year the Term Project will be a focal of your entire week at SBC. You will be assigned teams and given your assignment on the first day, present your analysis to SBC’s experts in the midterm session, engage in SBC’s famous mock trade deadline, and go back before SBC’s experts to present your results in the Final.

INTRODUCTION AND TEAM ASSIGNMENTS Students will spend much of the week working on an ongoing small group project to take over an NBA team. First they will analyze their team, determine its goals, strategy for achieving those goals and tactics for getting there. Later in the week they will engage in a mock trade deadline, and finally they will present their results to a panel of experts. In this first session the term project will be explained in detail. Students will be broken into their small groups and given their NBA team assignments.

TEAM WORK SESSIONS The entire week of SBC will be packed with content and students will be pressed for time. Time will be set aside for teams to work on their presentations before presenting them to SBC’s panel of experts.

MIDTERM Your first assignment will be to analyze your assigned team. Who are you? How good are you? What are your strengths and weaknesses? What is your cap situation? What are your assets and liabilities? What are your goals? Then comes your strategy – what approach are you going to take in order to achieve your goals? Finally, tactics – what specific moves do you want to make to get there?

In this midterm session, teams will present their analyses to SBC’s panel of experts. You will receive valuable feedback, which you should incorporate into your strategy before proceeding to the mock trade deadline. These sessions will be conducted in private, to avoid tipping-off other teams.

PRACTICUM - MOCK TRADE DEADLINE The Mock Trade Deadline has been a highlight and focal point of SBC ever since it began in 2016. Here is where your analysis and planning will be put to the test. In this live session you will negotiate with other teams to try to achieve your goals. SBC staff will fill the roles of ownership, agents, the league office and the media while you try to complete your work before the trade deadline.

FINAL How did the mock trade deadline work out for you? In this final session you will go back in front of SBC’s panel of experts to defend your analysis, strategy and tactics. You will recap how your team did in the mock trade deadline and defend the moves you made. Once again you will receive feedback from SBC’s panel of experts.

TEAM REVIEW & AWARDS We will recap the work all the teams did and present our analysis. One team will be identified as the winner.

SPORTS BUSINESS CLASSROOM 27 JOBS CURRICULUM

SBC is fundamentally about helping people fulfill their dreams of working in sports. Having good job hunting skills is essential in this pursuit. We discuss the fundamentals of a good resume, networking and interviewing skills. We cover how to make yourself stand out from the crowd who want the same jobs you want. Whether you’re fresh out of college or contemplating a mid-career change of direction, we’ve got you covered.

JOBS 101: NETWORKING AND RESUME WRITING Instructor: Jeff Fellenzer

We will discuss how to showcase your skills, begin building your network of contacts, and interview effectively. Once you have the skill set to do the job, it’s imperative that you know how to sell yourself and communicate how you will provide value to an organization. But today’s job market often comes down to who is most effectively utilizing the portal power of the portal, and we also will provide analysis on portal strategies.

JOBS 201: FINDING DIFFERENTIATORS Instructor: Jeff Fellenzer

It starts with understanding a critical component of the hiring process: This hire is not about you finding your “dream job.” It’s about making sure they understand why you would be a great hire for their team! What are you bringing to the table that will add value and help make their company or product better? Have you studied the company? How prepared are you? Are you projecting energy and enthusiasm? We will focus on how you can separate from the pack and reinforce the importance of having a strategic game plan as you approach every opportunity.

JOBS 301: TRANSITIONING CAREERS Instructor: Jeff Fellenzer

Hardly anyone lands their dream job right out of college. For most people it’s a winding path full of stops and detours. Each step along the way is filled with opportunities to further educate yourself, build your network, gain valuable experience, and prepare for the next step. They say it’s not the destination, it’s the journey – and this session talks about transitioning your vision and passion into reality.

These spots fill up quickly, and many former SBC students inquired too late this year to be considered.

SPORTS BUSINESS CLASSROOM 31 ADAM CAVE

Adam Cave was a student in the 2016 Sports Business Classroom, and was a favorite of the SBC staff and his fellow students. He earned recognition as a “Rising Star,” as a top young performer in the program. After SBC Adam was employed by the organization, serving as the video coordinator for the LA D-Fenders, their developmental league franchise. Adam tragically died in a motorcycle accident in late 2016.

Adam embodied the goals and spirt of Sports Business Classroom. Following the program, he wrote:

“The Sports Business Classroom was so enlightening and I learned more in 6 days than I had in 6 years at my “real” college. It was an amazing class but I think the most important thing was the people who were there on a day to day basis. Don’t get me wrong the speakers were unbelievable (Adam Silver came which was insane) but I loved getting to know all the people in our classroom. The other students were fantastic and I like to think that I formed some life long friends and colleagues while attending the class. I am also honored to have been named a rising star. At the beginning of the program I said to myself that I wanted to be a top student but I didn’t think that I could achieve what I did. It meant so much to me to be considered a rising star so thank you.”

Adam left a lasting impression, and will not be forgotten. We continue to honor his memory as an integral part of the spirit and ethos of Sports Business Classroom.

SPORTS BUSINESS CLASSROOM 32 SEKOU SMITH

Successfully working in basketball means taking on a series of increasingly difficult challenges. But no task in the business would be more challenging than finding a person anywhere in the entire basketball community with a bad word to say about Sekou Smith. He was truly a friend to everyone he met.

Tragically, our friend Sekou was among the millions of lives lost during the COVID-19 pandemic, but his influence in the basketball community at large, and specifically at Sports Business Classroom, lives on.

Sekou, wonderfully led our Media and Broadcasting 101 program and worked steadfastly to help create the specific curriculum the students would learn. He wanted everyone to leave Sports Business Classroom with an understanding of the bedrock principles of solid journalism and, memorably, in a planning meeting, added, “These students also need to learn how to work a damn gym.” And so they did.

Sekou was a critical member of the team at Turner Sports covering the league as an analyst on NBA TV, and as a writer and podcast host for NBA.com. Steve Quintana, the Executive Producer for NBA.com remembers him fondly saying, “He was an incredibly talented and incredibly versatile journalist. Lots of NBA journalists today can do well on TV and podcasts, but they can’t write. Or they can write, but they don’t do so well in front of the camera or behind the microphone. Sekou could do it all very well… As good as he was at his job, Sekou was even better as a person. Extremely friendly, he never met a stranger.”

Sekou was among the journalists selected to go to Orlando and live in the NBA Bubble. Fresh off his release from Orlando after the NBA Finals, he graciously shared his experience with our 2020 SBC Virtual Conference students and it was in his description of why he chose to go to the NBA Bubble that we find the essence of who Sekou Smith was as a journalist and a professional.

“If I wouldn’t have spent time in there so I could know what it was like and understand what the players and everybody else was going through, I would have been sitting at home and it would have been eating me alive.”
