ENEAS MACKAY, STIRLING 1911 PRINTKD AT THE " NORTHERN OHRONIOLB " OFFICE, INYBRNESS PREFACE The following Etymology of the Principal Gaelic ISTational Names, Personal Names, and Surnames was originally, and still is, part of the Gaelic EtymologicaJ Dictionary by the late Dr MacBain. The Disquisition on Ptolemy's Geography of Scotland first appeared in the Transactions of the Gaelic Society of Inverness, and, later, as a pamphlet. The Publisher feels sure that the issue of these Treatises in their present foim will confer a boon on those who cannot have access to them as originally published. They contain a great deal of information on subjects which have for long years interested Gaelic students and the Gaelic public, although they have not always properly understood them. Indeed, hereto- fore they have been much obscured by fanciful fallacies, which Dr MacBain's study and exposition will go a long way to dispel. • What's in an Irish Name?
What’s in an Irish Name? A Study of the Personal Naming Systems of Irish and Irish English Liam Mac Mathúna (St Patrick’s College, Dublin) 1. Introduction: The Irish Patronymic System Prior to 1600 While the history of Irish personal names displays general similarities with the fortunes of the country’s place-names, it also shows significant differences, as both first and second names are closely bound up with the ego-identity of those to whom they belong.1 This paper examines how the indigenous system of Gaelic personal names was moulded to the requirements of a foreign, English-medium administration, and how the early twentieth-century cultural revival prompted the re-establish- ment of an Irish-language nomenclature. It sets out the native Irish system of surnames, which distinguishes formally between male and female (married/ un- married) and shows how this was assimilated into the very different English sys- tem, where one surname is applied to all. A distinguishing feature of nomen- clature in Ireland today is the phenomenon of dual Irish and English language naming, with most individuals accepting that there are two versions of their na- me. The uneasy relationship between these two versions, on the fault-line of lan- guage contact, as it were, is also examined. Thus, the paper demonstrates that personal names, at once the pivots of individual and group identity, are a rich source of continuing insight into the dynamics of Irish and English language contact in Ireland. Irish personal names have a long history. Many of the earliest records of Irish are preserved on standing stones incised with the strokes and dots of ogam, a 1 See the paper given at the Celtic Englishes II Colloquium on the theme of “Toponyms across Languages: The Role of Toponymy in Ireland’s Language Shifts” (Mac Mathúna 2000).

  • Family Tree Maker
The Bloodline of the MacTavish Chiefs Generation No. 1 1. King of Connacht Eochaidh1 Muighmheadhoin1. Notes for King of Connacht Eochaidh Muighmheadhoin: Copyright: Patricia Adams, July 1, 2000, USA Please keep in mind that the pedigree of Clan MacTavish reaching this far back in history is in ancient times. There are no existing birth records, death records, etc., with the exception of the ancient annals and chronicles. There were no computers, no CDs, no microfilm, etc. Not everyone could read and write. The name of the same person was many times spelled differently by different scribes. We have to depend on the Annals of the Four Master, Annals of Ulster, Annals of Tigernach, and these records often time disagree on the year of the event. Later published materials may have picked up on incorrect information, or may have found newer documentation. Clans may very well have changed pedigrees over the years, sometimes because they learned of factual information and sometimes because they simply took advantage to change the line of a Chief to what they felt was a loftier claim. (The Clan Campbell, for example, changed their published Chief's line between 1975 and 1992.) I take this opportunity to caution you when reading history or pedigrees based on ancient documents or documents 1700, which may be written in another language (such as Latin) and call for translations. The line of any chief of a Clan (just as our personal family research) becomes speculation and opinion as you go back before the year 1000. Some of us in our own personal family research may not even be searchable before the year 1700.

  • Tochmarc Moméra As Echtra to the Otherworld
Tochmarc Moméra as Echtra to the Otherworld Ksenia Kudenko Tochmarc Moméra (TM), ‘The Wooing of Moméra’, is a tale found solely in the Yellow Book of Lecan (TCD MS1318, alias H.2.16; cols. 341–343).1 The tale belongs to the Cycles of the Kings and explores the Spanish journey of Eógan Taídlech, the eponymous ancestor of the Eóganacht, whose floruit is allegedly placed in the second century AD. The tale forms part and parcel of the lore of the Eóganacht, along with the early Irish account Do Bunad Imthechta Eóganachta, ‘Concerning the origin of the wandering of the Eóganacht’ (late ninth or early tenth century, Ó Corráin 1985, 53) and the late saga Cath Maighe Léna (CML), ‘The Battle of Magh Léna’ (late thirteenth or early fourteenth century, Jackson 1938, xxiv). According to Do Bunad, Eógan is an outsider who comes to Ireland with his fleet and saves the Irish from starvation, after which he or his son Eógan is granted kingship in the south of Ireland (Meyer 1912, 312–314). It has been suggested that TM represents another attempt to reconcile the Eóghanacht legend with the Milesian. According to the Milesian story, Eóghan was the descendant of Éibher son of Míl of Spain, and a native Irishman, while in Do Bunad Imthechta Eóganachta he was a foreigner from Spain. Tochmarc Moméra unites the two by making the Irishman Eóghan sail to Spain, marry the daughter of the king (significantly called Éibher) and return to conquer Ireland (Jackson 1938, xxvi–xxvii). While preserving the crucial link with Spain, TM relies on the traditional pedigree of the Eóganacht (O’Brien 1976, 192, 250).

  • Origins of the Maceoghainn Clan: What Information Can Y Chromosome Markers Provide?
Page 1 Origins of the MacEoghainn clan: What information can Y chromosome markers provide? John McEwan 10th July 2005 The intention of this article is to provide background to the Y chromosome investigation we are attempting to undertake into the origins of the Ewing and McEwen surname variants. There is no guarantee of success of the project and it may take some time before we are in a position to judge the outcome. The objective is to identify if the oral and written history of the clan and weigh it on the scales of the information DNA provides. Specifically, the article reviews the recorded origins of the MacEoghainn surname and then describes some potential investigations that can be done using the DNA data. Later articles will describe the results of work to address these questions. Surnames Surnames largely became fixed in England and Ireland during the period 1000-1200 AD, but in Scotland they are primarily related to the clan system. The reason for surnames derives from the Norman invasion and various aspects of the feudal system. However, detailed genealogies were a feature of Celtic life and many Scottish clans can trace their ancestry (at least as an oral tradition) back 1500 to 2000 years. Accepted origin The available oral and written tradition is that the Scottish MacEoghainn clan (to use a Gaelic rendering of the name which means “son of Ewen”) originally resided in Argyll. When transliterated into English, from Gaelic this became Ewing, McEwen, McEwan and other associated variants. In tracing my own family the earliest spelling of the name was McEwing in the late 1700s, then McEwen and after 1870 when they had shifted from Islay to the Glasgow area McEwan.

  • Insights Into the O'neills of Ireland from DNA Testing
Journal of Genetic Genealogy 2:18-26, 2006 Insights Into the O’Neills of Ireland from DNA Testing Edwin B. O’Neill and John D. McLaughlin The O'Neills of Ireland are one of the best known and important families in Irish history, descended from a long dynastic line that for centuries were Kings of Ulster and High Kings of Ireland. By traditional pedigree they are patrilineal descendants of Niall "of the Nine Hostages" who was the semi-historical High King of Ireland who died in 405 and who was the founder of the famous Ui Neill dynasty. But an examination of DNA data on males with the O’Neill, McLaughlin, O Cathain, McShane and other related surnames has led to a theory that the Royal Tyrone O’Neills of Ireland, from some point forward, were not, as history records, patrilineal descendents from the line of the Ui Neill. An analysis of available Y-DNA data on 102 males with the O’Neill surname reveals the existence of two different O’Neill Y-STR clusters, both primarily located in the region of Ireland associated with the Ui Neill line and the Royal O’Neills. Results of testing the Y-SNP M222 indicate that the two groups of O’Neills are distinctly separate. Documented Irish history, coupled with Y-DNA data on surnames linked to the Ui Neill line at different time periods (McLaughlin, O Cathain and McShane) suggest the approximate time frame of a non-paternal event (NPE) in the Royal O’Neill line occurred between the 900s and 1500s.
