About the Key Scope of the Key This key is intended to assist Connecticut Envirothon students in the identification of aquatic benthic macroinvertebrates. As such, it is targeted toward organisms that are most commonly found in the riffle microhabitats of Connecticut streams. When conducting an actual field study of riffle dwelling macroinvertebrates, there may be an organism collected at a site in Connecticut that will not be found in this key. In this case, you should utilize another reference guide to identify the organism. Several useful guides are listed below. (Polycentropodidae), Eoneureclipsis chinachotiae n. sp. (Psychomyiidae), Hydropsyche khaonanensis n. sp. (Hydropsychidae), and Lannapsyche tairomyenensis n. sp. (Odontoceridae) are described and illustrated. Polyplectropus hofmaierae n. sp. is distinguished from other species by the shape of the apical end of its inferior appendages and its sharp intermediate appendages. The posterior edges of their inferior appendages run slanting to the ventrodistal point and are densely covered by short and stiff bristles. Eoneureclipsis chinachotiae n. sp. is differentiated by characters of its phallus, as the first two thirds of its length are slender and slightly curved. The distal part has a dorsal hump with a very slender thread on its caudal edge and is slightly bent downward and dilated. -

E-mail: [email protected]; [email protected] ABSTRACT The caddisfly genus Canoptila Mosely (Glossosomatidae: Protoptilinae), endemic to southeastern Brazil, is diagnosed and discussed in the context of other protoptiline genera, and a brief summary of its taxonomic history is provided. A new species, Canoptila williami, is described and illustrated, including a female, the first known for the genus. Additionally, the type species, Canoptila bifida Mosely, is redescribed and illustrated. There are three possible synapomorphies supporting the monophyly of Canoptila: 1) the presence of long spine-like posterolateral processes on tergum X; 2) the highly membranous digitate parameres on the endotheca; and 3) the unique combination of both forewing and hind wing venational characters. They are distributed unevenly; with the greatest number and density occurring in the Oriental Biogeographic Region and the smallest in the East Palearctic. Ecosystem services provided by Trichoptera are also very diverse and include their essential roles in food webs, in biological monitoring of water quality, as food for fish and other predators (many of which are of human concern), and as engineers that stabilize gravel bed sediment. They are especially important in capturing and using a wide variety of nutrients in many forms, transforming them for use by other organisms in freshwaters and surrounding riparian areas. -

SPECIES FACT SHEET Common Name: Haddock’s Rhyacophilan Caddisfly Scientific Name: Rhyacophila haddocki Denning 1968 Synonyms: Phylum: Arthropoda Class: Insecta Order: Trichoptera Family: Rhyacophilidae Type Locality: Gravel Creek, Mary’s Peak, Benton County, Oregon, July 30, 1666, James Haddock, col. Gravel Creek is more commonly known as Parker Creek. OR/WA BLM and FS Region 6 Units where Suspected or Documented: BLM: Mary’s Peak Resource Area. Myrtlewood Resource Area Salem District. Coos Bay District USFS: Siuslaw National Forest. Siskiyou National Forest. Description: Adult caddisflies resemble small moths with wings held tent-like over their back when at rest. They have long hair-like antennae and lack the coiled mouthparts that moths and butterflies have. The adult wings are covered by hairs. The forewings are usually darker and stronger. Adult Rhyacophila haddocki are 11 mm in length and light yellowish in color. The wings are yellowish with dark colored veins and an irregular pattern of dark markings (see photograph in Technical Description Appendix). Adult Caddisfly (NC State 2005). Rhyacophila haddocki Denning 1968 1 Life History: Rhyacophila is a large genus of primitive caddisflies that live in cool, running freshwater throughout the northern hemisphere. Species in this genus are usually associated with small,. cool or cold montane streams where their diversity is greatest. Fifty species of Rhyacophila have been recorded from Oregon, 28 from Marys Peak in Benton County (Wisseman 1991). Larvae of this genus are free-living and largely carnivorous. This group of caddisflies does not construct a case until just prior to pupation. Cases are typically a crude shelter of small stones tied together and attached to the substrate with strands of silk. -

All sites were characterized physiographically by application of environmental assessment protocol to Atlantic Forest streams and by some physical and chemical parameters. Of the 19 streams sampled, six were classified as reference, six streams as intermediate (moderate anthropic impact) and seven streams as poor (strong anthropic impact). In each site, a multi-habitat sampling was taken with a kick sampler net. -

Psilotreta is an infrequently collected odontocerid caddisfly in which the larvae are known for constructing an incredibly strong case and often aggre gating in large numbers when attaching their cases to rocks for pupation (Parker and Wiggins 1987). -
