The seed of the plant was extracted by percolation using ethanol. The extract was partitioned to obtain chloroform, water, methanol, and pet-ether fractions. The chloroform fraction was discovered as the most active fraction in anticholinesterase activity. The compound displayed a very high anticholinesterase activity (99.5%) in an in vitro test. The result did not support the use of physostigma venenosum as an ordeal poison by the Calabar people of Nigeria to justify person accused of witch craft. Major bodily complications often result, necessitating a search for affordable solutions. Phytochemicals are commonly used in alternative medicine but less so in areas where obesity and T2D prevail. This thesis studies ellagic acid (EA) and its metabolite urolithin A (UA) as potential treatments for insulin resistance, focusing on the main site of glucose uptake, skeletal muscle. In diet-induced insulin-resistant mice, long-term dietary EA&UA administration reduced glucose levels in IPITTs, while UA alone also reduced serum FFA and fasting glucose levels. Mitochondrial turnover and ROS detoxification markers increased with treatment, indicating improved mitochondrial quality control. Differentiated C2C12 mouse myotubes were utilized to study cellular effects of EA and UA. In insulin resistant myotubes, treatment enhanced ATP ii production and reduced ROS, cytotoxicity, and apoptosis. With insulin, UA increased uncoupled respiration while decreasing ROS, implying increased fuel oxidation without adding oxidative stress.

    1 Original Research Article 2 3 THE MALOIDEAE (ROSACEAE) STRUCTURAL AND FUNCTIONAL FEATURES 4 DETERMINING PASSIVE IMMUNITY TO MYCOSIS 5 6 7 With the help of microscopic methods the leaves and fruits surface tissues of plants of four 8 genera of the Maloideae subfamily were screened: Malus Mill., Pyrus L., Cydonia Mill., 9 Mespilus L., as model objects, and attempts were made to explain the dependence of mycosis 10 damage on microstructural features. The species composition of fungi that cause damage to the 11 Maloideae leaves and fruits in the Russia southern regions is analyzed. It is established that 12 among pathogens with different types of parasitism there are common excitants, as well as 13 highly specialized, more represented on Mespilus germanica. Higher resistance to the complex 14 of fungal diseases, in comparison with apple and pear, was found in quince and medlar. This 15 stability at the initial stage of the pathological process is associated with structural features such 16 as micromorphology of the fruits and stomata cuticle in the abaxial leaves epidermis. The leaves 17 stomatal cracks of the medlar are narrow with raised outgrowths, on the surface of the fruit – the 18 layered structure of the cuticular layer. Quince has a powerful continuous cuticular cover. 19 Compared with Malus and Pyrus, Cydonia and Mespilus also have a large (30 % or more) 20 polyphenol content in the pericarp outer layer cells. In addition to the gender-specific differences 21 in the microstructure of the integumentary tissues and the content of polyphenols affecting the 22 resistance to pathogens at the stage of their penetration, general patterns of leaf surface 23 formation, such as hypostomacy, anomocytic stomata, folded microrelief of the cuticular surface, 24 and the presence of single and multicellular trichomes are noted.

Overall, 189 flavonoids have been documented, while the majority were identified from the Asteraceae, Moraceae, and Poaceae families. Application of SLH has led to isolate 79 flavonols, 63 flavones, and 18 flavanones. Homoisoflavanoids, and proanthocyanidins have only been isolated from the Asparagaceae and Lauraceae families, respectively, while the Asteraceae was the richest in flavones possessing 22 derivatives. Six flavones, four flavonols, three homoisoflavonoids, one flavanone, a flavanol, and an isoflavanol have been isolated as the new secondary metabolites. This technique has been able to isolate quercetin from 19 plant species, along with its 31 derivatives. Pure methanol and in combination with water, chloroform, and dichloromethane have generally been used as eluents. This comprehensive review provides significant information regarding to remarkably use of SLH in isolation and purification of flavonoids from all the plant families; thus, it might be considered an appreciable guideline for further phytochemical investigation of these compounds.

Maleae consists of economically and ecologically important plants. However, there are considerable disputes on generic circumscription due to the lack of a reliable phylogeny at generic level. In this study, molecular phylogeny of 35 generally accepted genera in Maleae is established using 15 chloroplast regions. Gillenia isthemostbasalcladeofMaleae,followedbyKageneckia + Lindleya, Vauquelinia, and a typical radiation clade, the core Maleae, suggesting that the proposal of four subtribes is reasonable.

These plants contain various phenolic compounds and fatty acids with valuable biological activity. Among green and selective extraction methods, supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) extraction has been shown to be the method of choice for the recovery of these naturally occurring compounds. Operative parameters and working conditions have been optimized by experimenting with different pressures (300–400 bar), temperatures (50–60 ◦C) and CO2 flow rates (50 mL/min) with 1% ethanol as co-solvent. The extraction time varied from 60 to 70 min.
