    Paperinik, ou comment les Italiens sont parvenus à mettre des pantalons à Donald Duck Gianni Haver et Michaël Meyer Parmi la production des bandes dessinées Disney, un personnage peu connu dans le contexte francophone est pourtant un véritable mythe en Italie. Il est à la fois un héros apprécié pour les histoires dans lesquelles il apparaît et un ambassadeur de l’école Disney italienne. Il s’agit de Paperinik, le double super-héroïque de Donald Duck. Du point de vue de l’étude de la bande des- sinée, il constitue une figure très pertinente pour interroger la circulation des modèles visuels et narratifs de la culture de masse américaine, et leurs réap- propriations par le Vieux Continent. Pour faire apparaître les échanges et les hybridations qui sont à l’ori- gine du personnage de Paperinik, il est nécessaire d’effectuer un itinéraire qui tient compte à la fois de l’arrivée des productions Disney en Italie et de la diffusion des récits de super-héros américains. L’intégration de ces produc- tions dans le paysage culturel italien est démontrée par une appropriation rapide qui donne lieu à une production locale, aussi bien de récits Disney que d’aventures super-héroïques. Dans le cadre du personnage de Paperinik, ces influences vont se combiner avec des motifs issus de productions autochtones, en particulier les bandes dessinées mettant en scène des héros criminels.   • The Translation of American Comics During Italian Fascism
    Between Censorship and Innovation: The Translation of American Comics during Italian Fascism Caterina Sinibaldi (University of Warwick) Abstract This article outlines the main issues surrounding the process of import, trans- lation and cultural adaptation of American comics in Italy from 1908 to 1942. During this time, the first comics were translated from Europe and the United States, leading to a revolution in Italian children’s literature. These were also the years in which comics began to be perceived as a political, as well as pedagogical problem, which prompted the Fascist regime to issue censorship measures aimed at limiting their circulation. The aesthetic and ideological dimension of comics will be investigated alongside the different strategies of translation and adaptation used by Italian editors and cartoonists. The reasons behind the disapproval of comics by Italian pedagogues, and the ambivalent attitude of the Fascist regime, will also be explored. In conclusion, my anal- ysis aims to offer insights into the cultural function of children’s literature during Fascism and the specific role of comics as a site for innovation. Comics and Translation The history of Italian comics is a history of translation. Foreign comics, mostly from the United Kingdom, France and the United States, entered the Italian mar- ket at the beginning of the twentieth century, adding movement and colour to the pages of the first children’s magazines. Being labelled as a product for children, comics had to comply with specific translation norms and pedagogical (as well as aesthetic) requirements. Such requirements acquired political connotations during the years of Fascism (1922–43), when books for children became powerful tools for propaganda in the service of Mussolini’s regime.

Johnston, Jr. Commanding Officer, 2nd Bn., 334th Regt., 84th Infantry Division August 8, 2007 Dear 84th ID Veteran, Major Johnston’s mother Margaret and my father were sister and brother, so I am Major Johnston’s first cousin. I was born in 1940 and remember vividly the day my dad got word that Jimmy, his nephew, had been killed in March of 1945. After a Memorial Day service in 2005, I decided to try to use the Internet to find out about cousin Jimmy. I did not know his unit or rank, but quickly discovered several accounts about him. As I accumulated more information about him and about all of you of the 84th ID, I decided to attend the Nash- ville reunion and try to compile this document to honor him and all of the men of the 84th. I attended the reunion in Nashville in 2006 and met Brick Bradford and Art Mahler whose accounts are in this document. I wanted to meet more of you in Springfield but was not able to make it, so I sent some copies of an early DRAFT of this document to Brick to bring and to hand out for com- ments. That early draft has been updated with an account of my wonderful meeting with Sgt. Walter Chapman, a mortar man in Co. H and later the artist who illustrated the Division’s history by Draper.

    FUMETTO Venezia, Venezia è una città che con il fumetto città di fumetti e di spie ha sempre mantenuto rapporti molto stretti. Numerosi sono i fumettisti originari del capoluogo veneto che in Laguna hanno svolto, più o meno continuativamente, la propria GIUSEPPE POLLICELLI professione. Tra questi, Hugo Pratt, Dino Battaglia, Romano Scarpa e Giorgio Cavazzano, che non raramente hanno inserito la città delle gondole nelle loro tavole, talvolta facendone persino la protagonista dei loro lavori. Over the past two years we have finally been able to process the bulk of the very large DC collection known as the Jerome Wenker Collection. He started collecting comic books in 1983 and has assembled one of the most complete collections of DC comics that were known to exist. He had regular ("newsstand" up until the 1990's) issues, direct afterwards, the collection was only 22 short of being complete (with only 84 incomplete.) This collection is a piece of Comic book history.
