These notes are based upon 3 meetings on the 11th March 2016. This document will ultimately form an appendix to the final report for ‘The Operator’s Story’ piece. Although the findings have been arranged and structured by Imperial College London, they remain a collation of thoughts and statements from interviewees, and continue to be the opinions of those interviewed, rather than of Imperial College London. Prefacing the notes is a summary of Imperial College’s key findings based on comments made, which will be drawn out further in the final report for ‘The Operator’s Story’. Method This content is a collation in note form of views expressed in the interviews that were conducted for this study. This mini case study does not attempt to provide a comprehensive picture of Guangzhou Metropolitan Corporation (GMC), but rather focuses on specific topics of interest to The Operators’ Story project. The other three are Guangzhou Railway Station, Guangzhou North Railway Station, and Guangzhou East Railway Station. After its opening, Guangzhou South Railway Station has been gradually taking the leading role of train transport from Guangzhou Railway Station, becoming one of the six key passenger train hubs of China. Abstract. Along with the rapidly increasing pressure of urban transportation, China's subway operation is facing the challenge of high-density passenger flow. In order to improve the level of subway operation and ensure its safety, it is necessary to analyze and study the operation status of the metro station under the condition of high-density passenger flow, and propose the corresponding improvement scheme. Taking Guangzhou Metro as the study object, this paper discusses and analyzes the operation and management status of Guangzhou Metro Station. And combined with the risks and deficiencies in the operation and organization of Guangzhou metro, effective improvement measures are proposed in this paper. Operation Status of Guangzhou Metro The first line of Guangzhou Metro opened on June 28, 1997, and Guangzhou became the fourth city in mainland China to open and operate the subway. As of April 26, 2018, Guangzhou Metro has 13 operating routes, with 391.6 km and 207 stations in total, whose opening mileage ranks third in China and fourth in the world now. As of July 24, 2018, Guangzhou Metro Line Network had transported 1.645 billion passengers safely, with an average daily passenger volume of 802.58 million, an increase of 7.88% over the same period of 2017 (7.4393 million). -

Method: To achieve the aim, the scholar analyzed and investigated their fashion street images and the four influential factors which create the images of street fashion: social backgrounds based on bibliographic data, physical environments, surrounding factors, and human and cultural factors from the fashion consciousness survey. Findings: This study shows that while Guomao is grown into an upscale calm fashion street for adults, Sanlitun is developed as a fashion street for trendy young adults. However, both areas have a short history, and it’s hard to say their street cultures were born naturally. Generally, one place creates its unique image based on its street image, but Beijing’s fashion streets were intentionally created according to government policy. In other words, in addition to the social backgrounds, physical environments, surrounding factors, and human and cultural factors shown by many preceding studies, policy factors played an extremely critical role, and they dominated other factors, which differentiate the fashion streets in Beijing from other developing countries’ fashion streets. Implications/Novel Contribution: This study will provide some inspiration for other developing countries’ economic and fashion development. -
Job-Worker Spatial Dynamics in Beijing: Insights from Smart Card Data

Recent decades have seen policies and projects 6 aiming at decentralizing urban structure and job-worker patterns, such as subway 7 network expansion, the suburbanization of housing and firms. But it is unclear 8 whether these changes produced a more balanced spatial configuration of jobs and 9 workers. To answer this question, this paper evaluated the ratio of jobs to workers 10 from Smart Card Data at the transit station level and offered a longitudinal study for 11 regular transit commuters. The method identifies the most preferred station around 12 each commuter’s workpalce and home location from individual smart datasets 13 according to their travel regularity, then the amounts of jobs and workers around each 14 station are estimated. A year-to-year evolution of job to worker ratios at the station 15 level is conducted. We classify general cases of steepening and flattening job-worker 16 dynamics, and they can be used in the study of other cities. The paper finds that (1) 17 only temporary balance appears around a few stations; (2) job-worker ratios tend to be 18 steepening rather than flattening, influencing commute patterns; (3) the polycentric 19 configuration of Beijing can be seen from the spatial pattern of job centers identified. -

The construction and operation of a metro system are costly, and the sustainable development of a metro system is difficult using government funding alone, particularly for developing countries. The main source for metro system financing in China is, currently, government budget and bank debt. Many cities have begun to seek new ways to attract funds from finance markets, which is increasing the need for the evaluation of metro financing. This study uses Beijing as a case study that utilises various financing modes with impressive results. As participants of the financing reform, the authors collected all the relative government documents and interviewed stakeholders to accomplish this work. This article reviews the development of financing modes for the Beijing Metro system during the last four decades and analyses the role of the government in the reformed financing system within the Chinese social political environment. The study addresses the advantages and challenges of the reforms in this context. To further analyses the technical processes of typical financing modes, the public-private partnership mode of Line 4, the BT mode of Olympic Branch Line, the insurance claim mode of Line 10 and the failure of the market oriented financing for Capital Airport Line are analysed and evaluated in detail. -

Abstract: With the rapid development of urban rail transit network, traveler’s route decision become more difficult to make and travelers’ route preferences vary with their characteristics. This study proposed a route recom- mendation algorithm with the least generalized travel cost based on the classification of traveler’s personal characteristic. The generalized travel cost model was established with the consideration of LOS variables (e.g. in-vehicle time, transfer time, number of transfers, in-vehicle traveler density, etc) and then a traveler classifier was constructed based on the K- nearest neighbor algorithm by machine learning how travelers’ characteristics affect their route choice intentions, thus the optimal route with the least generalized cost for each type of travelers being generated. Finally, the model and algorithm were verified to be valid with the data from Beijing subway network. 1 INTRODUCTION 2 GENERALIZED TRAVEL COST MODEL FOR SUBWAY TRAV- As the rail transit network has formed in more and ELERS more cities and the seamless transfer operation mode is adopted, travelers will have multiple route choices Under the condition of seamless transfer, the route between a pair of OD (origin to destination). But at the same time, it caused many issues such as informal settlement, air pollution and traffic congestions, which are both affecting residents and stressing the environment. To achieve intensive and diverse social activities, the demand for transportation also increased, the proportion of cars travelling is getting higher and higher. However, the trend of relying too much on private cars has caused traffic congestion, lack of parking spaces and other issues, which is against the goal of sustainable development. It used to be the largest railway station during the time of 1950s – 1980s. Subway Line 2 runs directly to the station and over 30 buses have stops here. Domestic trains and some international lines depart from this station, notably the lines linking Beijing to Moscow, Russia and Pyongyang, South Korea (DPRK).
