The 617St Academic Year at the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow
CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by Analecta Cracoviensia „Analecta Cracoviensia” 46 (2014), s. 315–360 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.15633/acr.971 The Canonization of the University Patron: The 617st Academic Year at the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow Without a doubt, one of the most important events of the past academic year was the canonization of our founder, Pope Blessed John Paul II. It is especially worth noting that the decision about the canonization and its date was announced public- ly precisely on the day of our university’s pilgrimage to Kalwaria Zebrzydowska. It was during a consistory on September 30th 2013 that Pope Francis announced that he would canonize two popes, John XXIII and John Paul II, on April 27th 2014, Divine Mercy Sunday. It immediately became apparent that this would be a unique event that would forever remain etched in our memories. Along with the inauguration of the new academic year, preparations for the fullest experience of the canonization of John Paul II – the founder, caring guardian and ultimately illustrious patron of the university – were undertaken. These were not only preparations related to the organization of travel to the canonization ceremony, but above all those whose purpose was to deepen the knowledge of the great Polish pope and the popular- ization of his teachings. Symposia and academic conferences organized on this occasion will be presented below in separate summaries. It was with great joy that we heard the words of the formula for canonization -

The Cradle of Sainthood
PEREGRINUS CRACOVIENSIS Zeszyt 10, 2000 ISSN 1425−1922 Stanisław Dziedzic The Cradle of Sainthood ow many universities can be found in Europe or even in the world, of which it can be said that they have been the cradles of saints, as is the case Hwith the Jagiellonian University? In fact it has been, and still is, the host of saints, blessed and those who died with a reputation of holiness are still growing by both those who died in the distant and not−so−distant past. During the mass in which the canonization was declared of Queen Jadwiga, the great founder and benefactor of the Cracow University, Pope John Paul II expressed this statement while highlighting and praising the queen’s contribution to his former Alma Mater. “Should not Cracow”, said the Pope, “along with all of Poland, be grateful for the works of Jadwiga that have blossomed so magnificently in the lives of so many sacred students and professors? Today, these great men of God of all generations, from John Kanty and Stanisław Kazimierczyk to the blessed Józef Sebastian Pelczar and God’s Servant Józef Bilczewski, appear before us to join in our hymn of the thanksgiving to God for the fact that, owing to the generous works of Queen Jadwiga this city has become the cradle of sainthood.”1 The ceremony in which Jadwiga was declared saint, held on Cracow’s Błonia on June 8, 1997, coincided with the 600th anniversary of the Faculty of Theology which was established due to the efforts of Jadwiga and her husband Jagiełło within the Studium Generale. -

Farewell to the First Great Chancellor 619Th Academic Year at the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow
„Analecta Cracoviensia” 48 (2016), s. 401–461 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.15633/acr.2034 Farewell to the First Great Chancellor 619th academic year at the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow Among the many events that occurred during the past academic year, it is especially worth noting Cardinal Franciszek Macharski’s passing away on August 2, 2016, at the age of 89. Cardinal Macharski was our university’s first Great Chancellor starting in 1981, when Pope St. John Paul II established it as the Pontifical Academy of Theology. Our community was greatly saddened to learn about this. However, this sadness was mixed with joy resulting from the conclusion of World Youth Day, the international meeting of Catholic youth. In his communiqué, His Excellency Rev. Prof. Dr. Hab. Wojciech Zyzak, Rector of our university, wrote: “The academic community of the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow learned of the passing of Cardinal Franciszek Macharski ‒ Archbishop of Krakow in 1979-2005, Great Chancellor of our university, pastor, and continuer of the legacy of Cardinal Karol Wojtyła ‒ with great sadness […] In 1981, when the Pontifical Academy of Theology [presently the pontifical University of John Paul II] was founded, he became the Great Chancellor of our university. He holds an honorary doctorate from the Pontifical Academy of The- ology, the Jagiellonian University, and the Academy of Catholic Theology in Warsaw among others.” Cardinal Franciszek Macharski’s funeral took place in Krakow, first in the Fran- ciscan basilica (on August 4, 2016), and next in the Wawel Cathedral (on August 5, 2016). -

The 616Th Academic Year at the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow
Analecta Cracoviensia 45 (2013), s. 355–390 Pursuing the Faith: The 616th Academic Year at the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow In his apostolic letter Porta Fidei inaugurating the Year of Faith in the Church, Pope Benedict XVI reminded that “Having reached the end of his life, St. Paul asks his disciple Timothy to ‘aim at faith’ (2 Timothy 2:22) with the same constancy as when he was a boy (cf. 2 Timothy 3:15). We hear this invitation directed to each of us…” (Porta Fidei 15). The Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow also tried to answer this invitation, which through its ordinary didactic work and research as well as through specific initiatives undertaken on the occasion of the Year of Faith served to strengthen and deepen life in accordance with the professed faith. The completed 2012–2013 academic year, as previous ones, began with a pilgrimage to the Marian shrine in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska on Friday September 28th 2012. The first part of the program was a lecture devoted to the problem of homelessness given by Dr. Małgorzata Duda of the Faculty of Social Sciences. Next, Mass was concelebrated with the rector of the university Rev. Dr. Hab. Władysław Zuziak, a professor of the Pontifical University of John Paul II, leading. The homily was said by Rev. Dr. Wojciech Krawczyk, SDB, the rector of the Major Seminary of the Society of St. Francis de Sales in Krakow. In the afternoon, the Stations of the Cross, which were prepared by students of theology, took place on the Calvary’s paths. -
