Given some familiarity with, and personal connections to, Kenya, this dissertation began first with shock and concern, and later with suspicion of the way the post election violence was presented in the Western media as yet another example of sudden, prolific, and nonsensical outbreaks of violence in Africa. It seemed notable that the violence occurred around political elections and important to explore the stakes therein. A review of available literature on the topic revealed that historical injustices and ethnic inequality seemed to be contributing factors in the post-election violence. A review of the psychological literature pertaining to collective violence raised questions about identity and power, obedience and conformity, and the breakdown of law and order. To the extent to which these factors and principles shed some light on what iv happened in Kenya, the question remained: what might all of this mean, concretely, in people‘s lives? Beyond the stories of Western journalists and behavioral scientists, I wanted to know how Kenyans narrated the post-election violence. I turn to multisited ethnography, a method of research and writing that affords the procedural flexibility to follow the traces of such a complex phenomenon and to reflexively document the process of ―finding‖ and understanding. If what both the Western press and conventional psychology provide tend to be general, abstract, ahistorical explanations of violence, I present a situated account involving a diversity of descriptions and explanations given by Kenyans from various tribes, classes, and political affiliations about the post-election violence and prospects of sustained peace. This includes detailed first person accounts of how things unfolded, or, fell apart. The Kenyans I spoke with narrate the post- election violence by both contextualizing it in (post)colonial history and by personalizing it in a manner that shows ethnicity in Kenya to be highly nuanced and complex. What results from this dissertation is a rearticulation of the post-election violence through revealing relations that have been obscured by the dominant discourse. Finally, with regard to studying violence and peace, it is assumed that total understanding is impossible; I have been attendant to the challenges associated with understanding and writing about others as subjects of violence. In this effort the regime was assisted by collaborators, known as loyalists, drawn from the same communities as the insurgents. Based primarily on new archival sources, this article sets out the history of loyalism, stresses the ambiguity of allegiances during the conflict and argues that loyalism was a product of the same intellectual debates that had spawned the Mau Mau insurgency. The article concludes by stressing the significance for postcolonial Kenya of this history. KEY WORDS: Kenya, Mau Mau, conflict, decolonization. INTRODUCTION W RITING to a local newspaper in November 1954, Francis Gatheru ex- plained his opposition to the Mau Mau rebellion. During the Emergency of 1952–60, loyalists such as Gatheru supported the colonial military campaign against fellow Gikuyu, Embu and Meru amongst Mau Mau’s insurgents.1 Gatheru understood his loyalism with reference to the oath promising to support Mau Mau that perhaps up to 90 per cent of the local population had taken.2 Unlike missionaries, colonial officials and some Christian converts, Gatheru was not greatly concerned with the ritual aspects of oathing.

    daniel speich The Kenyan Style of “African Socialism”: Developmental Knowledge Claims and the Explanatory Limits of the Cold War In the late 1950s, the French philosopher Raymond Aron diagnosed a marked affinity between communist and capitalist social systems of which, as he empha- sized, analysts on both sides of the Iron Curtain were well aware.1 This claim was in line with the statements by TalcottParsons on the organizational convergence of all industrializing societies. And it mirrored the “end of ideology” thesis that was being articulated at the time also by authors like Daniel Bell, Edward Shils, or Seymour Lipset. They argued that all industrial societies—regardless of their ideological grounds—were on their way to solving major social problems through a technical fix. Shared concerns with organizational questions of how to raise economic productivity had replaced the once heated debate over property ownership.2 While the systemic dichotomy between the East and the West seemed to wither, Aron drew attention to a new divide that opened up between the North and the South. In 1960, he opened a seminar on the industrial society and the “Three Worlds,” hosted by the Swiss Evangelic Church, in Rheinfelden, Switzerland. Political scientists, philosophers, and philanthropic Protestants had gathered to assess the attractiveness of the West to the new postcolonial states. Parsons Washington University, St Louis, Missouri Abstract Scholarly and popular histories of Kenya largely agree that African Second World War vet- erans played a central role in the Kenya Land Freedom Army. Former African members of the colonial security forces have reinforced these assumptions by claiming to have been covert Mau Mau supporters, either after their discharge, or as serving soldiers. In reality, few Mau Mau generals had actual combat experience. Those who served in the colonial military usually did so in labor units or support arms. It therefore warrants asking why so many Kenyans accept that combat veterans played such a central role in the KLFA and in Kenyan history. Understanding how veterans of the colonial army have become national heroes, both for their wartime service and their supposed leadership of Mau Mau, reveals the capacity of popular history to create more useful and inclusive forms of African nationalism.     ABSTRACT DAUGHTER OF ODORO: GRACE ONYANGO AND AFRICAN WOMEN’S HISTORY by Phoebe Musandu Since the eighties, the Academy has produced a modest amount of scholarship on African women’s history. A number of these works at have been limited demographically to allow for in- depth culture-specific analysis. They trace the various spaces in which women exercised power and authority, the various ways in which that agency was confronted by colonial-era challenges and how women struggled to adapt to those challenges with varying levels of success. However, works of African women’s history produced thus far are limited in ethno-geographic scope and even within those ethnic groups and geographical areas they have touched, there are more issues requiring historical research. This project is thus a contribution to the process of recovering women’s history in what is today Kenya. It will engage historical and ethno- historical data to demonstrate Kenyan female socio-economic and political agency, with a focus on the latter and with greater emphasis on Luo women.
