Of Smog Suckers and Smog Rings

The SMOG FREE PROJECT by Dutch artist/innovator Daan Roosegaarde and his team of designers and engineers thinks up new ways to reduce pollution on an urban scale and to provide an inspirational experience of a clean future. Part of this project is the SMOG FREE TOWER, the world’s first smog “vacuum cleaner.” It has already been successfully installed in South Korea, China, the Netherlands and Poland. An aluminum tower seven meters (23 ft) tall, it uses patented positive-ionization technology and only 1,170 watt of green electricity to produce smog-free air in public spaces – to be precise, it can clean 30,000 cbm of air per hour. Studies by the Eindhoven University of Technology prove that the SMOG FREE TOWER works. Moreover, Roosegaarde has created a limited series of SMOG FREE RINGS featuring the compressed smog particles collected in the SMOG FREE TOWER. Buying this ring is tantamount to donating 1,000 cbm of clean air to a city. “We want to share the dream of clean air whilst making people part of the solution instead of the problem,” says the artist, explaining his long-running campaign for clean air, which has already earned him many accolades, including instance the Grand Award for Sustainability, Notable Design for Social Impact Award, Most Visionary Project in Europe, and the Ethics Award.
