  • Keeping the Cottage in the Family
Keeping the Cottage in the Family A country place is a symbol of relaxation, continuity in life, and family harmony. But when the topic of ownership succession is raised, that lovely spot can be transformed into a source of stress, uncertainty and family strife Anthony Layton MBA, CIM August 2017 Keeping the Cottage in the Family | 1 Letter from Anthony Layton Cottage succession, along with other estate planning issues, is among my professional specialties. After decades of helping families confront and solve the cottage-succession problem, I decided to put pen to paper and document this knowledge. The result is Keeping the Cottage in the Family, a detailed review of everything a cottage owner should consider when contemplating what happens when it’s time to pass on the property to the next generation. A succession plan can only be produced with the help of seasoned professionals who are familiar with the many pitfalls common to this challenge. I would like to thank Tom Burpee, Morris Jacobson and Matthew Elder for sharing their considerable expertise in the preparation of this article. The City of San Diego Report to the Historical Resources Board DATE ISSUED: August 10, 2017 REPORT NO. HRB-17-047 HEARING DATE: August 24, 2017 SUBJECT: ITEM #5 – William and Carrie Old Bungalow Court RESOURCE INFO: California Historical Resources Inventory Database (CHRID) link APPLICANT: Atlas at 30th Street LLC represented by Scott A. Moomjian LOCATION: 2002-2010 30th Street, Golden Hill Community, Council District 3 APN 539-155-13-00 DESCRIPTION: Consider the designation of the William and Carrie Old Bungalow Court located at 2002-2010 30th Street as a historical resource. STAFF RECOMMENDATION Designate the William and Carrie Old Bungalow Court located at 2002-2010 30th Street as a historical resource with a period of significance of 1948 under HRB Criteria A and C. This recommendation is based on the following findings: 1. The resource is a special element of Golden Hill and San Diego’s historical and architectural development and retains integrity to its 1948 date of construction and period of significance. Specifically, the resource embodies the character defining features of a recognized variety of bungalow court, is one of a finite and limited number of bungalow courts remaining which reflect the early- to mid-20th century development of multi-family housing in Golden Hill and San Diego, and retains integrity for that association. 2. The resource embodies the distinctive characteristics through the retention of character defining features of a Minimal Traditional style bungalow court and retains a good level of architectural integrity from its 1948 date of construction and period of significance. Specifically, the resource retains an original attached full court layout; gabled roof forms with boxed eave and minimal overhang; wood shingle cladding accented with brick; multi- light wood double hung and fixed windows; and modest, compact size with simple plan forms.

  • Courtyard As Passive Design Solution for School Buildings in Hot Area
Proceedings of the 2nd World Congress on Civil, Structural, and Environmental Engineering (CSEE’17) Barcelona, Spain – April 2 – 4, 2017 Paper No. AWSPT 141 ISSN: 2371-5294 DOI: 10.11159/awspt17.141 Courtyard as Passive Design Solution for School Buildings in Hot Area Muna Salameh1,2, and Hanan Taleb3 1Ajman University UAE [email protected] 2Architecture and Sustainable Built Environment, British University in Dubai UAE 3Sustainable Design of Built Environment, British University in Dubai UAE [email protected] Abstract - Sustainability in architecture must produce buildings that give satisfaction for people with less energy consumption and less environmental problems. The sustainable design in architecture adopts passive design strategies like courtyards that produce buildings which use the wind for cooling and the sun for lighting and heating. The courtyard was a climate responsive design in the past, that provided people with easy direct solutions for their problems with the climate, and it was able to satisfy their social needs. In this study there will be an investigating for the effect of closed courtyard with different proportions on school building in UAE, to test the capability of the closed courtyard in improving the thermal performance of the school building consequently minimize the energy consumption. The study adopted a school building as a case study because courtyards are used mostly in houses while it can be beneficial for public buildings like schools. Courtyard can provide the school with private outdoor space, and can improve the thermal and ventilation properties of the school building thus minimize the energy consumption. Moreover the courtyard can provide the school with safe inner playground and learning scientific atmosphere for the students.

  • Los Angeles Bibliography
A HISTORICAL BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT IN THE LOS ANGELES METROPOLITAN AREA Compiled by Richard Longstreth 1998, revised 16 May 2018 This listing focuses on historical studies, with an emphasis is on scholarly work published during the past thirty years. I have also included a section on popular pictorial histories due to the wealth of information they afford. To keep the scope manageable, the geographic area covered is primarily limited to Los Angeles and Orange counties, except in cases where a community, such as Santa Barbara; a building, such as the Mission Inn; or an architect, such as Irving Gill, are of transcendent importance to the region. Thanks go to Kenneth Breisch, Dora Crouch, Thomas Hines, Greg Hise, Gail Ostergren, and Martin Schiesl for adding to the list. Additions, corrections, and updates are welcome. Please send them to me at [email protected].
