Letter from the Director of Development and External Relations

Dear Candidate

Thank you for your interest in UWC Atlantic College and the new senior position of Head of

Fundraising. It is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and forward-thinking international college that combines a distinctive vision with a global reputation for educational innovation and a unique, world class . I look forward to working with an outstanding fundraiser who is equally motivated to play a crucial role, alongside the Principal, Board of Governors, Senior Fundraising Volunteers and a highly-successful Development Team, in delivering an ambitious Development

Strategy as part of the College’s new Strategic Plan.

UWC Atlantic College was established over 50 years ago with an inspiring vision to use education to encourage international understanding and tolerance, a mission that is more relevant than ever in today’s increasingly fragmented society. Our 350 bright, engaged and committed students (aged 16 –

19) are drawn from over 90 countries from around the world and are selected irrespective of their race, religion, politics and ability to pay, with a significant number coming from regions of conflict.

A pioneer in international education, the College was instrumental in the creation of the International Baccalaureate to better reflect our wider, more holistic approach to education. New initiatives include the development of the Atlantic Diploma programme that combines rigorous academic work with experiential learning in areas such as social justice, sustainability, conflict resolution, community service and physical challenge. As the founding College, we are also at the heart of the global UWC education movement - - made up of 14 similar colleges throughout the world, with students selected via a unique system of UWC National Committees in over 150 countries, including the UK.

Letter from the Director of Development and External Relations

It is an exciting time for us as we begin implementing our ambitious Strategic Plan. This includes increasing the diversity of the student body with an even broader scholarship programme and plans for significant new investment in the College’s historic buildings, grounds and facilities, supported by a major development campaign. As a result, we are investing in our fundraising capacity so that the

Development and Communications Department, based at the College, can build on its impressive track record. There is enormous opportunity to build more support from public, private and corporate supporters, and from our worldwide alumni. What we need is an additional member of our Development Team to work from the UWC London office, who has the vision, commitment and practical know-how to help us deepen our reach and engage more financial supporters. For the right post-holder, it will be one of the most rewarding possible fundraising positions. We expect the Head of Fundraising to be excited by UWC Atlantic College’s vision, to share our values and to bring her/his professional experience to bear in helping us achieve the College’s ambitions.

I do hope you will consider this position seriously. It is a tremendous challenge and one I hope you find as inspiring and as motivating as I do.

About UWC Atlantic College and the UWC Movement

Based in a 12th Century castle on the coast of South , UWC Atlantic College was established over 50 years ago to encourage international understanding and tolerance. It aimed to do this by demonstrating how conflict and hostility could be overcome if young people from different nations, races and religions could be brought together and challenged physically and academically, and in doing so could learn how to live in harmony with one another

From its inception, UWC Atlantic College, whose Patron is Her Majesty the Queen, has developed and provided a unique, world-class education and a global reputation for educational innovation. Originally students studied for British ‘A’ Level examinations but this did not provide the broad-based educative experience that the College’s founders desired. In response, the College helped to create what became known as the International Baccalaureate. The College continues to develop new initiatives such as the current Atlantic Diploma programme in which in addition to studying for the IB, students undertake experiential work in areas such as social justice, sustainability and conflict resolution. Academic work continues to be combined with community service and physical challenge.
