Make Your Summer Work For You!

Out of school for the summer? This might seem like a time for kicking back and unwinding after the school year, but it’s actually a great opportunity to start building that resume to help you impress the college of your choice or gain experience for your future career. Your plans can be more than simply getting a summer job; there are a number of activities that can help you stay active and gain valuable experience over the summer months. Use the link below to help you find some summer programs. Work Employment is one of the most practical ways to build your resume and impress colleges and employers. Even if working during the school year is not an option, there are often seasonal establishments such as summer camps that look for help specifically during the summer months. Any job is good, but working in a leadership position or in an academic area would be ideal. The more a job challenges you, the more it builds the skills that colleges and future employers are interested in seeing in applicants. Whether you've finalized your career path or not, participating in a summer internship program will move you forward in many ways towards a viable and meaningful future. Summer internships for high school students are designed to provide valuable on-the-job experience for young people who are just starting to explore career options. These programs can be a fun and exciting first step toward furthering your education and figuring out what direction you want to take in life. Applying for, participating in, and completing a summer internship as a high school student will give you the confidence and skills you need to understand the world of the "job search." It will allow you to explore a wide variety of career options including marketing, design, nursing, accounting, or something else. It will propel you into the world of networking. And it will give you an impressive entry for your resume—the same resume that will potentially help you land your first big job after college. Travel While this may not be an option for everyone, summer travel can be an exciting way to enrich your mind while enhancing your resume. Visiting and exploring foreign places will broaden your horizons, allowing you to expand your awareness of other peoples and cultures. It is also a great chance to develop language skills. Even if you cannot visit foreign places, take time to explore local sites and museums.

Take a Class 'Summer school' does not always have to be a bad thing, and colleges and employers may look kindly upon applicants who take the initiative to further their education over the summer. You can check out your local community college to take an additional class.

Summer Enrichment Programs

Along with summer classes, enrichment programs can be another valuable and educational summer experience. Investigate the types of summer enrichment programs offered by local youth groups or area colleges and universities. Many of these organizations have residential or day camps for high school students focused on specific topics such as music, creative writing, , engineering and a variety of other areas of interest. These programs are a good way to explore and gain experience in fields you may want to study in college. Visit websites for colleges that interest you and look into their summer programs for high school students. Some colleges will have general programs, but others may have very specialized programs for subjects like engineering, computer science, music, and many other topics. Visit Colleges

It almost goes without saying that campus visits should be part of any college applicant’s summer plans. Of course, while these visits are a priority when considering which colleges to apply to, it is important to remember that they should be just one part of your summer equation. A few campus tours don’t constitute a summer’s worth of experience; they should be included in your plans, along with other resume- building activities and experiences, in order to set you apart from your fellow applicants. Visit college websites for more information about how you can sign-up/register for visits/tours to your favorite campuses. *Please be sure to register for your college visit on the college’s website. Virtual Tours of college/university campuses are available on college/university websites. Virtual Tours of college campuses can also be found at: www.campustours.com and www.ecampustours.com

Standardized tests are an important part of the admissions equation at most of the country's highly selective colleges. For SAT practice, go to: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat For ACT practice, go to: http://www.act.org/content/act/en/products-and-services/the-act.html Go on the Career Center page of the St. Charles High School website to find additional test preparation information: www.ccboe.com/schools/stcharles/index.php/2016-04-24-18-50-51/2016-04-22-21-40-09

Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Career Exploration Program (Information from www.asvabprogram.com)

What is the ASVAB?

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery - Career Exploration Program (ASVAB CEP) is a career planning program that includes three components. The three components include: the ASVAB - a multiple-aptitude test, the FYI - an interest inventory, and the OCCU-Find – a career catalog with relevant occupational data and planning tools. When using these components together, it provides students with the confidence to map out a post-secondary plan that aligns with their individual skills and interests. The ASVAB has been shown to have up to 96% reliability in determining aptitudes ranging from composite academic ability, to language comprehension, to mechanics. Results of the exam are normally ready for student release within 2 weeks after the exam is taken. A representative from Baltimore MEPS will meet with the students who take the ASVAB in the fall and provide post-exam interpretations for them. Juniors and seniors are able to take the ASVAB CEP for FREE!!!

The ASVAB consists of nine short individual tests covering:  General Science - measures knowledge of life science, earth and space science, and physical science  Arithmetic Reasoning - measures ability to solve basic arithmetic word problems  Word Knowledge - measures ability to understand the meaning of words through synonyms  Paragraph Comprehension - measures ability to obtain information from written material  Mathematics Knowledge - measures knowledge of mathematical concepts and applications  Electronics Information - measures knowledge of electrical current, circuits, devices, and electronic systems  Auto and Shop Information - measures knowledge of automotive maintenance and repair, and wood and metal shop practices  Mechanical Comprehension - measures knowledge of the principles of mechanical devices, structural support, and properties of materials  Assembling Objects - measures ability with spatial relationships

What is the relationship between the ASVAB and the Military?

ASVAB participants are not under any obligation to the Military as a result of taking the ASVAB. A junior or senior who is interested in the military will use their scores from the ASVAB to enlist in the military after graduation. The scores are good for two years. Many students take the ASVAB for career exploration and have no interest in military occupations.

Did you know?

A student’s decision to enter college, technical or vocational school, military service or the civilian world of work after high school is an important one. They may already have a general idea of what direction they want to go in life; however, the ASVAB CEP can assist them in narrowing career fields down to a manageable number. In addition, the program may show them that they have abilities in fields that they have never considered. The ASVAB Career Exploration Program is not offered to try to recruit students for the military, but to help them with planning their future, whether it lay with the military or not. It can help students take steps now toward finding a career that’s right for them. Take advantage of all the ASVAB CEP can offer by signing up when it is available. The test will be administered at St. Charles High School in the fall and spring for any juniors and seniors interested in taking it. Listen for announcements about the date of the ASVAB and when you can sign-up to take it.

*The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is FREE and available for interested Juniors and Seniors!!! We are not able to schedule a date for the ASVAB to be administered in the school at this time. A virtual test is NOT available.

***Juniors and Seniors who are interested in ENLISTING in the military can CONTACT A RECRUITER to take an ASVAB test and talk to them about a career in the military.
