Know the Persian sources of Maratha history. 1.1 INTRODUCTION The history of Marathas can be best studied with the help of first hand source material like Bakhars, State papers, court Histories, Chronicles and accounts of contemporary travelers, who came to India and made observations of Maharashtra during the period of Marathas. The Maratha scholars and historians had worked hard to construct the history of the land and people of Maharashtra. Among such scholars people like Kashinath Sane, Rajwade, Khare and Parasnis were well known luminaries in this field of history writing of Maratha. Kashinath Sane published a mass of original material like Bakhars, Sanads, letters and other state papers in his journal Kavyetihas Samgraha for more eleven years during the nineteenth century. There is much more them contribution of the Bharat Itihas Sanshodhan Mandal, Pune to this regard. -

“Re-Rigging” the Vedas: Examining the Effects of Changing Education and Purity Standards and Political Influence on the Contemporary Hindu Priesthood Christine Shanaberger Religious Studies RST 490 David McMahan, advisor Submitted: May 4, 2006 Graduated: May 13, 2006 1 Introduction In the academic study of religion, we are often given impressions about a tradition that are textually accurate, but do not directly correspond with its practice amongst its devotees. Hinduism is one such tradition where scholarly work has been predominately textual and quite removed from practices “on the ground.” While most scholars recognize that many indigenous Hindu practices do not conform to the Brahmanical standards described in ancient Hindu texts, there has only recently been a movement to study the “popular,” non-Brahmanical traditions, let alone to look at the Brahmanical practice and its variance with ancient conventions. I have personally experienced this inconsistency between textual and popular Hinduism. After spending a semester in India, I quickly realized that my background in the study of Hinduism was, indeed, merely a background. I found myself re-learning aspects of the tradition and theology that I thought I had already understood and redefining the meaning of many practices as I learned of their practical application. Most importantly, I discovered that Hindu practices and beliefs are so diverse that I could never anticipate who would believe or practice in what way. I met many “modernized” Indians who both ignored and retained many orthodox elements of their traditions, priests who were unaware of even the most basic elements of Hindu mythology, and devotees who had no qualms engaging in both orthodox Brahmin and quite unorthodox non-Brahmin religious practices. -

1 2 Directorate of Fisheries, Government of Goa Chief Editor’s Note Fish and Fisheries Sector has an important place in Goa and has impact on the livelihood of many Goans. To conserve and preserve the nutritious food from the sea, it is a high time to re-administer our activities by thinking out of the box, for conservation and preservation of our natural resources. The Government with this Department has taken a step forward for a co-operative movement by involving the local fishermen in boosting the fish production scientifically, thereby giving technical hand support from the Government mechanism. The Government is planning to boost the State’s economy for which new projects such as Reservoir Cage Culture Farming, Shell Fish Culture, Aquamarine Amusement Park, has been initialised at preliminary stage. This year’s issue focuses on the all round development of the Fisheries Sector and providing a strict surveillance on the illegal activities in action. I express my sincere gratitude to the Hon’ble Minister of Fisheries, Shri. Avertano Furtado for his continuous support and encouragement along with the former Secretary of Fisheries, Shri Amjad Tak and present Secretary of Fisheries Shri. Sarita Fernandes1 Abstract A coast is a dynamic zone— accessible for a limited duration and dependent on the interplay of tides. Coastal zones are sensitive ecological habitats rich in resources and marine biodiversity. It has been a pivotal zone of cultural exchange, many of them resulting in the inception of coastal societies and cities. The building capacity and immense capability of a coast for strategy in protecting a sovereign state, a colonial power or a kingdom in the past has been a subject of historical and colonial maritime literature. Two and a half billion people (40% of the global population) live within a hundred kilometres of the coastline (United Nations 2017).. The linguistic diversity, traditional fishing methods like pole and line, spear fishing and shore seine alongside colonial history presents a magnum diversity of coastal societies in the urban and rural spectrum in India. The coastal zones of the intertidal and subtidal are nursery grounds for most of the predatory species of marine wildlife that are apex in the marine food web like sea turtles, sharks and dolphins whose reducing numbers have a direct impact on the health and functioning of the coast and ocean. Traditional or indigenous coastal societies have interplay between activities in the traditional law of the coastal commons and dynamic shifting land use with the sea. -
Political Economy of a Dominant Caste
Draft Political Economy of a Dominant Caste Rajeshwari Deshpande and Suhas Palshikar* This paper is an attempt to investigate the multiple crises facing the Maratha community of Maharashtra. A dominant, intermediate peasantry caste that assumed control of the state’s political apparatus in the fifties, the Marathas ordinarily resided politically within the Congress fold and thus facilitated the continued domination of the Congress party within the state. However, Maratha politics has been in flux over the past two decades or so. At the formal level, this dominant community has somehow managed to retain power in the electoral arena (Palshikar- Birmal, 2003)—though it may be about to lose it. And yet, at the more intricate levels of political competition, the long surviving, complex patterns of Maratha dominance stand challenged in several ways. One, the challenge is of loss of Maratha hegemony and consequent loss of leadership of the non-Maratha backward communities, the OBCs. The other challenge pertains to the inability of different factions of Marathas to negotiate peace and ensure their combined domination through power sharing. And the third was the internal crisis of disconnect between political elite and the Maratha community which further contribute to the loss of hegemony. Various consequences emerged from these crises. One was simply the dispersal of the Maratha elite across different parties. The other was the increased competitiveness of politics in the state and the decline of not only the Congress system, but of the Congress party in Maharashtra. The third was a growing chasm within the community between the neo-rich and the newly impoverished. -
