COBEM is a comprehensive event, organized every 2 years, which gathers students, engineers and scientists of many different fields that contribute for the advances in mechanical engineering and related fields. People from around world are welcome to participate in the 24th edition of the congress, to discuss important issues such as sustainability, new Ricardo D. Torres Fred L. Amorim manufacturing approaches, thermal and fluid Congress Chair Congress Vice-Chair sciences, numerical modeling among others PUCPR PUCPR important subjects. The occasion constitutes an excellent opportunity for the interaction of the Brazilian community with a selected group of internationally leading scientists. Besides, the meeting also provides students, at early career stage, the privilege of presenting and discussing their works with first-rated scientists. The aim is to provide a relaxed atmosphere to facilitate networking among participants and foster possible future collaborations. The scientific program contemplates the most diverse areas of fundamental and applied mechanical engineering. The Congress is divided in 21 Symposia, Stephan H. Och Paulo Soares which include 12 invited oral contributions, 921 regular Treasurer Program Chair oral contributions and 581 posters. In 1990 he was head of the many-body group at the High Performance Computing Center of Jülich for four years. Then he was director of the Laboratoire de Physique et Mécanique des Milieux Heterogenes de l’ École Supérieure de Physique et de Chimie Industrielles de Paris (ESPCI), for six years, where he also filled a chair. In 1996, he was named full professor and director of the Institute of Computer Physics at the University of Stuttgart. His research on the numerical simulation of particulate systems includes the study of fractures of disordered materials, the effect of wind in dunes, appolonian packings, density waves in pipe flow, fragmentation, stratification, segregation, compactification, sedimentation and non-linear elasticity of packings. He is member of the Brazilian Academy of Science, a Guggenheim Fellow (1986), Max-Planck prize recipient (2002) and won the 2005 Gentner-Kastler prize. He is managing editor of International ‘Journal of Modern Physics C’ and of ‘Granular Matter’ and member of several editorial boards and committees including the Research Committee (Forschungskommission) of ETH. He has authored/co-authored about 400 publications and co-edited 13 books. The vegetation of the municipality is characterized mainly by an ecotone between the Sea- sonal Semideciduous Forest and Mixed Ombrophilous Forest. We recorded 56 species, distributed in 31 genera and 16 families. The most representative families were Pteridaceae (14) and Polypo- diaceae (11) and the wealthier genre was Thelypteris (6). The terricolous species were predomi- nant (72%) and the preferential environments were riparian vegetation and forest interior (70%). The flora of Campo Mourão was more similar to the studies conducted in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, and the cophenetic correlation coefficient (r = 0.9058) showed a consistent adjust.

Over the last decade, network analysis has been extensively applied to the study of plant–pollinator interactions, as it provides a consistent view of the structure of plant–pollinator interactions. The aim of this study was to use palynological studies to obtain an understanding of the relationship between floral visitor bees and the pioneer plant S. didymum in a fragment of the Atlantic Forest, and also learn about the other plants that interact to form this network. Five hundred bees were collected from 32 species distributed into five families: Andrenidae, Apidae, Colletidae, Megachilidae, and Halictidae. The interaction network consisted of 21 bee species and 35 pollen types.

    TRANSPORT NETWORKS AND ECOTOURISM DESTINATIONS: THE AIM FOR SUSTAINABILITY Eden Sorupia Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2007 Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning The University of Melbourne Produced on archival quality paper ABSTRACT Ecotourism as sustainable travel to biodiversity-rich areas advocates the utilisation of modes with minimal impacts to the environment. Yet most often the modes available to the public and the transport network that serves the destination undermine its aims of sustainability. The research looks into the relationship between an ecotourism destination and the transport network that serves it. The objective of the study is to identify policies and structures that contribute to improve its sustainability. Case studies from a developed and developing country are utilised to examine the relationship and to investigate whether strategies differ given the different settings and opportunities open to each. Policies regarding transport, tourism and the environment were evaluated and correlated with current practices, reports, literature as well as interviews of key informants. The study has found that even with good public transport services to the national parks, the mode of choice of visitors remains the private vehicle. Public transport solutions in urban areas remain relevant in the countryside. Policies aimed at reducing car use and promoting public transport have comparable impacts to rural areas. In this setting, non-government organisations and interest groups play a big role in educating the public regarding the sustainability of their mode choices. The examples from Switzerland and Brazil have shown that their innate differences do not prevent them from employing similar policies and structures, and that improving the sustainability of transport network that serves an ecotourism destination is possible.

Amphibian conservation depends on knowledge about species composition and distribution. This emphasizes the need for inventories, especially in poorly sampled areas. This is the case of Southern grasslands (Campos Sulinos) associated with Araucaria forest in the state of Paraná, southern Brazil. We sampled amphibians in 105 environments from 2004 to 2013 using transect sampling, active search and surveys at breeding sites. We found 61 anuran species and two caecilians. This is the first comprehensive list of amphibian species inhabiting grasslands in Paraná. This landscape deserves high conservation priority before these natural grasslands vanish. Key words. Museums, plays and art exhibitions, the buzzy nightlife, hikes through national parks, and the possibility to take back home some charming arts and crafts could also be a good enough reason to visit, but nothing would be the same without Brazilian hospitality. It gets even better at the table: there’s not a single person who wouldn’t like to get along with visitors over a shot of cachaça or a caipirinha, or offer them typical local dishes made with ingredients from the sea or from the forest, genuinely Brazilian or influenced by its many immigrants.

Culicivora caudacuta occurs in the Cerrado, Pampa and Chaco grasslands of Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay. Its breeding biology is poorly known. Here, I present a summary of the published information and new data gathered between 2003 and 2009 in southeast Brazil at Tapira, Minas Gerais. Breeding occurred during the rainy season (October to March), clutch size being three eggs. Juveniles and immatures show a different plumage from the adults, mostly brownish orange. All nests studied at Tapira showed evidence of cooperative breeding, with one helper engaged in incubation and provisioning the young. This is the first observations of this behavior for the species. The species has a wider range than currently understood and its presence in protected areas is similarly more common. Keywords. Nest description; Cooperative breeding; Eggs; Young plumage; Records. Brazil was the host of the event that took place in Campo Grande, MS, from October 28 to November 1, after going all around of the world. The series of conferences, also known as Wildfire, celebrated its 30 years of existence in this edition, being called Wildfire+30. The first Conference was held in Boston, United States, in 1989 as a response of the international community to several wildfires that happened in many countries in the 80s. The first conference was a milestone for the establishment of the bases for global and transboundary cooperation on fire management, which were gradually improved in the following editions: 2nd edition in Vancouver, Canada (1997); 3rd in Sydney, Australia (2003); 4th in Seville, Spain (2007); 5th in Sun City, South Africa (2011); 6th in the city of Pyeongchang, South Korea (2015). The strengthening of bilateral and multilateral cooperation agreements established between the conferences fostered the creation of the Global Wildland Fire Network and the Regional Wildland Fire Networks. Nowadays there are 15 Networks (14 Regional Networks and the Global Network) around the world that dialogue, cooperate and promote the exchange of knowledge, experiences and lessons learned, improving national and regional cooperative fire management capacities and strategies, networking and strengthening interoperability of cross-border cooperation and multisectoral actions in integrated fire management.

Entre os vários belíssimos atrativos existentes no território nacional, o Parque Estadual de Vila Velha (PEVV), localizado em Ponta Grossa, no Paraná se destaca pelas suas belezas cênicas, e por sua administração estar voltada ao meio ambiente. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo demonstrar a opinião dos turistas que visitam o parque no que se refere o atendimento, a infraestrutura existente, o transporte interno e a manutenção geral. Após as mudanças ocorridas em 2004, com a implantação do Plano de manejo o parque deixou de ser um refugio para os finais de semana e passou a ser observado como refugio natural, atraindo a atenção de turistas do Brasil e do mundo.
