Wolny in the Gymnasium of Sremski Karlovci contains the specimens of well-known Serbian botanist Dr. Josif Pančić, who donated them during and after his visit to the Gymnasium. Also, one small part of the specimens from this collection is deposited in the herbarium of the Institute for Nature Conservation of Vojvodina Province in Novi Sad. A list of 281 herbarium sheets with 295 taxa is presented for the first time to the botanical community, with detailed information on where and when the plants were collected, and notes on the specimens and revision data. Key words: herbarium collection, Josif Pančić, Andreas R. Wolny, Gymnasi- um of Sremski Karlovci INTRODUCTION During his long botanical career Dr. Josif Pančić (1814-1888) investi- gated the plant life in the territories of present-day Serbia, Montenegro, Romania, Bulgaria, and, to a lesser extent, Croatia, Hungary and Austria, 38 PERIĆ, R. ET AL.: PANČIĆ’S SPECIMENS IN HERBARIUM OF A. WOLNY which resulted in the first national floras of the Principalities of Serbia (Pančić 1874, 1884), Montenegro (Pančić 1875), Bulgaria (Pančić 1883, 1886), as well as many other botanical papers (Janković 1970). He gave special attention to gathering a lot of plant material, which he later included in his herbarium collection. The majority of these specimens are deposited in the Herbarium of the Institute of Botany and Botanical Garden “Jevremovac” - BEOU (Thiers 2012), within the special collection Herba- rium Pancicianum (Vukojičić et al. 2011). A small part of his specimens is deposited in the Herbarium of the Natural History Museum in Belgrade (BEO, Thiers 2012) and in the herbarium collection of Andreas Rafael Wolny in the Gymnasium of Sremski Karlovci. Also, an unknown number of specimens are scattered through other Herbaria, mainly in central Europe. The herbarium collection of Andreas Rafael Wolny (1757-1827) in the Gymnasium of Sremski Karlovci is the oldest known collection in Serbia, with approximately 7300 sheets. Within this collection are stored speci- mens of vascular plants, mosses, lichens, fungi and algae, principally originating from the territory of the former Habsburg Monarchy, including the present-day province of Vojvodina (Serbia). It can be divided into three different collections: authentic material of Wolny (197 sheets), general school collection (about 6800 sheets) and material of Josif Pančić (270 sheets). After an official decision of the Institute for Protection and Study of cultural monuments (nr. 240/50, March 13th, 1950), the herbarium collection of Andreas Wolny in the Gymnasium of Sremski Karlovci was inventoried and protected by the state (Marčetić 1950, 1952). Wolny was highly respected both by his contemporaries (Waldstein & Kitaibel 1802, Sadler 1820, 1830, Rochel 1828, Schuster 1829, Haberle 1830) and by subsequent botanists like Kanitz (1865), Schulzer et al. (1866), Janka, Borbás and Jávorka (Bunke 1996) as well. Because of its great historical and scientific importance many botanists (A. Rochel, A. Kanitz, L. Adamović, A. Forenbacher, N. Košanin) visited Wolny’s collec- tion (Marčetić 1950). During his botanical excursion to Srem in 1857 Pan- čić also visited and studied Wolny’s collection (Hirc 1919, Mitranović 1964). As was usual for that time he donated herbarium material during his visit (he also sent a few specimens afterwards). This part of Pančić’s bota- nical legacy from the earliest known period of his work is presented for the first time to the botanical community. MATERIAL AND METHODS The list of herbarium exsiccates of Josif Pančić in Andreas R. Wolny’s collection is given according to their number in the Herbarium Inventory BULLETIN OF THE NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM, 2012, 5: 37-71. 39 (198-467) with a few additional sheets without number. All information from labels is stored in the database in original form. Classification and proper determination of each taxon were checked. Processed information includes revised or properly and fully written names of taxa and authors, as well as various abbreviations with updated toponymy and notes concerning the sheets and specimens characteristics. If the identification was either wrong, or still valid but now considered a synonym (Tutin et al. 1968, 1972, 1976, 1980, 1993), the appropriate taxon (specific or subspecific) name was entered after the revision of the material. During the review of the herbarium collection all specimens were photographed in the original. Regarding the List of herbarium exsiccates in the following chapter, the valid names were marked with bold letters. If names were misapplied or representing synonyms, standard symbols were used (“–” misapplication of name; “≡” isotypic synonyms; “=” heterotypic synonyms). In cases where some taxa are considered to be particularly interesting from the chorologi- cal, historical or nature protection point of view their significance is discussed in a special section (Obs.). • Belgrade and Istanbul in the Global Competition
UDC 711.4 (497.11) 711.4 (560.118) CHASING THE LIMELIGHT: BELGRADE AND ISTANBUL IN THE GLOBAL COMPETITION Aleksandra Stupar, Cenk Hamamcioglu The purpose of this paper is to analyze and compare main changes of contemporary Belgrade and Istanbul - two urban nodes at the crossroads of different and multileveled flows. Following the same pattern of global activation, inevitable competition and networking, these cities are trying to synchronize their multidimensional background, establish new patterns of global behavior and adjust them to the dynamism of modern life. Consequently, their historical role has been modified, urban tissue has been developed, recreated and regenerated, and the output of this process represents an attractive testimony of their global initiation. Revealing the ambiguous nature of strong economic forces as well as a new fusion of urban cultures, Belgrade and Istanbul are structuring the globalized image with the new key-elements. However, their true potential and the real efficiency of this process should be re-evaluated - the changed physiognomy of the city could improve its position in the global hierarchy and facilitate its integration into the global community, but, sometimes, local limitations are too complex and too strong to be ignored. INTRODUCTION Belgrade and Istanbul, two interesting exam- for the Austrians and the Turks, and both ples interlinked by specific historical circum- conquerors 'molded' the city according to their Although the process of globalization repre- stances, have decided to apply this

Wulfenia 24 (2017): 143 –162 Mitteilungen des Kärntner Botanikzentrums Klagenfurt Distribution and conservation status of some rare and threatened orchid taxa in the central Balkans and the southern part of the Pannonian Plain Vladan Djordjević, Dmitar Lakušić, Slobodan Jovanović & Vladimir Stevanović Summary: Along with being a centre of plant species diversity and endemism, the Balkan Peninsula is one of the parts of Europe with the highest number of orchid taxa. However, the orchid flora in the central Balkans has not been sufficiently studied. The paper presents the distribution of ten rare and threatened taxa of Orchidaceae in the central Balkans and the southern part of the Pannonian Plain: Anacamptis papilionacea, Epipactis palustris, E. purpurata, Epipogium aphyllum, Goodyera repens, Gymnadenia frivaldii, Ophrys apifera, O. insectifera, Orchis militaris and O. spitzelii subsp. spitzelii. In addition to field investigation, checking and revision of herbarium material, literature sources were also used for supplementing distribution data. The distribution maps of these taxa in the central Balkans (Serbia and Kosovo region) and the southern part of the Pannonian Plain (Vojvodina) are created on a 10 km × 10 km UTM grid system. Data concerning their habitat preferences, population size and the estimated IUCN conservation status in the study area are provided. Keywords: Orchidaceae, phytogeography, IUCN conservation status, Balkan Peninsula The orchid family is one of the largest and most diverse families in the plant kingdom with estimates of about 28 000 species distributed in about 763 genera (Chase et al. 2015; Christenhusz & Byng 2016). According to Hágsater & Dumont (1996), over 300 orchid species occur in Europe, North Africa and Near East.

41 (1): (2017) 79-82 Note Refinding of the critically endangered species Eranthis hyemalis (L.) Salisb. in Western and Eastern Serbia Ivana Petrović1✳ and Dmitar Lakušić2 1 Department of Agrochemistry and Plant Physiology, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Belgrade, Nemanjina 6, 11070 Zemun, Serbia 2 Institute of Botany and Botanical Garden “Jevremovac”, Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade, Takovska 43, 11000 Belgrade, Serbia ABSTRACT: Eranthis hyemalis is a critically endangered species in Serbia, where it is protected by national law. The only confirmed finding place of the species in Serbia was the Bagremara forest near Bačka Palanka. It was assumed that the species disappeared from other recorded localities, or else the data were not confirmed. During a field study in 2016, we registered this species in Valjevo, a town in Western Serbia. A previous record of the species at this locality dates from 1992, but the precise location was not known. We also registered a small population in Eastern Serbia (on the hill Vrška Čuka). Both localities were georeferenced with GPS devices. Small groups of individuals are present at these locations, and they are endangered by multiple factors. All chorological data for Serbia are presented on a UTM grid map with squares of 10 km × 10 km. Protection measures are urgently required.
