ANDERSON Department ofAnthropology University ofCalifornia, Riverside Riverside, CA 92521~0418 ABSTRACT.-Knowledge is socially constructed, yet humans succeed in knowing a great deal about their environments. Recent debates over the nature of "science" involve extreme positions, from claims that allscience is arbitrary to claims that science is somehow a privileged body of truth. Something may be learned by considering the biological knowledge of a very different culture with a long record of high civilization. Yucatec Maya cthnobiology agrees with contemporary international biological science in many respects, almost all of them highly specific, pragmatic and observational. It differs in many other respects, most of them highly inferential and cosmological. One may tentatively conclude that common observation of everyday matters is more directly affected by interaction with the nonhuman environment than is abstract deductive reasoning. but that social factors operate at all levels. Jamaica has such a long list of amazingly beautiful and colorful birds that it's hard to pick a favorite. Close to the top of the list however surely was this Jamaican Spindalis, a species only found in Jamaica. Photo by guide Cory Gregory. Sitting between South America and Cuba, the Caribbean nation of Jamaica was a fantastic place for us to enjoy the warm weather, the plethora of unique and fascinating birds, the relaxed lifestyle, and escaping the holiday hustle and bustle. With the birdy and historical Green Castle Estate as our home base, we made a variety of daytrips and had the luxury of returning back to the same place every night! Our day trips took us to a variety of birding hotspots and between them all, we saw a vast majority of the avifauna that this island nation has to offer. Even in driving from Montego Bay to Green Castle on our first day, we were surrounded with attention-grabbing species like Magnificent Frigatebirds gliding overhead, Zenaida Doves sitting on the wires, and even a small gathering of the rare West Indian Whistling-Ducks in Discovery Bay! Our first day at Green Castle was our first foray into the forests and we quickly connected with a fun collection of endemic species like the showy Streamertail, Jamaican Woodpecker, Sad Flycatcher, White-chinned Thrush, Jamaican Spindalis, Orangequit, and many others. -

This chapter treats adult thrasher survival, longevity, short- and long-range natal dispersal of the young, including the intrinsic and extrinsic characteristics of natal dispersers, and a comparison of the field techniques used in monitoring the spatiotemporal aspects of dispersal, e.g., observations, biotelemetry, and banding. Rounding out the chapter are some of the inherent and ecological factors influencing immature thrashers’ survival and dispersal, e.g., preferred habitat, diet, season, ectoparasites, and the effects of two major hurricanes, which resulted in food shortages following both disturbances. Annual Survival Rates (Rain-Forest Population) In the early 1990s, the tenet that tropical birds survive much longer than their north temperate counterparts, many of which are migratory, came into question (Karr et al. 1990). Whether or not the dogma can survive, however, awaits further empirical evidence from additional studies. -

1 THE ANCIENT MAYA CITY: ANTHROPOGENIC LANDSCAPES, SETTLEMENT ARCHAEOLOGY, AND CARACOL, BELIZE Arlen F. Chase and Diane Z. Chase Maya archaeology has seen substantial effort invested in mapping and recording site plans and boundaries. This research has been particularly advanced through the application of LiDAR technology to the ancient Maya landscape, which has more easily permitted the registration of both the topography and the modifications made to the land surface – features only rarely mapped at large-scale by archaeological projects. When combined with over 30 years of archaeological research, LiDAR permits us to determine Caracol’s spatial and temporal boundaries and landscape modifications, as well as to demonstrate how the site operated as a city through the use of embedded administrative nodes connected to an extensive solar causeway system. A comparative review of settlement data in the Maya region indicates that the ancient Maya minimally had two kinds of cities. In one form of urbanism, such as at Caracol, sustainable agricultural practices could be carried out within the boundaries of the city; in the other form of Maya urbanism, the settlement was too dense and compact for the practice of sustainable agriculture, meaning that primary agricultural fields must have existed outside the city boundaries. This conclusion significantly advances our understanding of tropical urbanism in antiquity.
