Trnava Region I Slovak Investment and Trade Development Agency TRNAVA REGION I www.sario.sk 1 I Slovak Investment and Trade Development Agency General Information The Trnava region is one of the smallest regions of Slovakia in terms of both area and population. Geographically, it is largely made up of the Danubian plain and the Záhorská lowlands, with the Little Carpathian Mountains running between them. The area is rich in water resources, with the rivers Danube, Váh and Morava draining the region. The region has common borders with three countries: Czech Republic, Hungary and Austria. This fact helps determine the national structure of the inhabitants. In addition to Slovaks, there are two major ethnic groups – Hungarians and Czechs. The Trnava region comprises 7 districts, 16 towns and 251 villages with the population of 600 000 inhabitants and a population density of 134 inhabitants per km2. Trnava region’s main strengths are: growing rate of foreign capital especially in industry; the highest level of utilization of agricultural land in SR; presence of major foreign investment; qualified work force; potential for building industrial zones; good transport position in terms of investors - Bratislava, Vienna, airport, highway; concentration of institutions with interregional importance; existence of 3 universities; important cultural and historic relics; existence of geothermal and healing springs. There is one international airport, in Piešťany, which is mainly used for charter flights. The main international airport in Bratislava is within an hour's drive of the entire region. The main railway lines crossing the region connect the capital Bratislava to Czech Republic and Hungary and to other important centres in Slovakia, such as Žilina, Zvolen and Košice. The road network totals 3309 km, of which 1900 km are state roads. There are two highways passing through the region, one connecting Bratislava to Prague and the other Bratislava to Trenčín. The suppliers of telephone services are Slovak Telekom, a.s., which offers fixed lines, and T-Mobile Slovensko, a.s., Orange Slovensko, a.s. and Telefónica O2 Slovakia, s.r.o., all of which offer mobile services. Rates are the same all over the Slovak Republic. Gas and electricity supply rates are the same for each whole region. Water supply rates and sewage fees are independent and thus vary from district to district. Economy and Industry The region has a rich industrial heritage. The food industry predominates in the fertile South, while the North is home to consumer industries. The industrial center Trnava is home to various industries ranging from machinery to glass production. Jobs in the manufacturing sector account for 40% of the region's employment. Structure of Industry The region's main sectors are automotive, electrotechnics, metallurgy, chemistry and the glass industry. This situation may be improved by the shift towards higher added value production, especially in engineering and electronics, which has been noticeable recently due to the activities of several foreign investors. Azad (Northern Illinois University, USA), Michael E. Auer (Carinthia University of Applied Sciences, Austria) and V. Judson Harward (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA) Limited resources and other factors pose major challenges for engineering, technology, and science educators’ ability to provide adequate laboratory experience for students. An Internet accessible remote laboratory, which is an arrangement that allows laboratory equipment to be controlled remotely, addresses these difficulties and allows more efficient laboratory management. Internet Accessible Remote Laboratories: Scalable E-Learning Tools for Engineering and Science Disciplines collects current developments in the multidisciplinary creation of Internet accessible remote laboratories. This book offers perspectives on teaching with online laboratories, pedagogical design, system architectures for remote laboratories, future trends, and policy issues in the use of remote laboratories. It is useful resource for graduate and undergraduate students in electrical and computer engineering and computer science programs, as well as researchers who are interested in learning more about the current status of the field, as well as various approaches to remote laboratory design. • State of the Environment Report - Slovak Republic 2012
FOREWORD FOREWORD Few people today realize that the environment is a conditioning factor for the existence of each one of us. All of its components and ecosystems influence its trend. Their situation today is changing not only within the local and regional scope, but also at the global level. Several places have shown improved quality of the environment thanks to building the environmental infrastructure. Through implementing legal, educational, economic, organisational, and other instruments we have been trying to increase environmental safety, appropriateness, loading capacity, usability, and aesthetics. These include also building flood protection facilities in areas with the highest risk of floods in Slovakia. The world is facing environmental threats of global magnitude. These include, for example, impacts provoked by the changed climate or gradual depletion of selected strategic natural resources. All of this occurs also in consequence of a continuing rise in the world´s population that exceeded the number of seven billion people. In many countries, this has spurred phenomena such as starvation, poverty, devastation of land and marine ecosystems, reduction of biodiversity, excessive exploitation of minerals, and enormous air pollution, water contamination and environmental pollution by waste. The UN Conference for sustainable development - RIO + 20 organized in Rio de Janeiro in 2012 addressed the already mentioned as well as other issues. The Conference hosted also the Slovak delegation. This global conference of the highest rank analysed the possibilities of reducing the impacts of adverse environmental situation in social and economic aspects and proposed measures for its improvement and for securing sustainable development. Following the global RIO+20 conference, the European Union prepared its 7th Environmental Action Plan by 2020 (7.
