General Information

The region is one of the smallest regions of in terms of both area and population. Geographically, it is largely made up of the Danubian plain and the Záhorská lowlands, with the Little Carpathian Mountains running between them. The area is rich in water resources, with the rivers , Váh and draining the region. The region has common borders with three countries: , and . This fact helps determine the national structure of the inhabitants. In addition to , there are two major ethnic groups – and . The comprises 7 districts, 16 and 251 villages with the population of 600 000 inhabitants and a population density of 134 inhabitants per km2. Trnava region’s main strengths are: growing rate of foreign capital especially in industry; the highest level of utilization of agricultural land in SR; presence of major foreign investment; qualified work force; potential for building industrial zones; good transport position in terms of investors - , Vienna, airport, highway; concentration of institutions with interregional importance; existence of 3 universities; important cultural and historic relics; existence of geothermal and healing springs.

Transport and Infrastructure

The Trnava region has a very good railway and road network. There is one international airport, in Piešťany, which is mainly used for charter flights. The main international airport in Bratislava is within an hour's drive of the entire region. The main railway lines crossing the region connect the capital Bratislava to Czech Republic and Hungary and to other important centres in Slovakia, such as Žilina, Zvolen and Košice. The road network totals 3309 km, of which 1900 km are state roads. There are two highways passing through the region, one connecting Bratislava to Prague and the other Bratislava to Trenčín. The suppliers of telephone services are Slovak Telekom, a.s., which offers fixed lines, and T-Mobile Slovensko, a.s., Orange Slovensko, a.s. and Telefónica O2 Slovakia, s.r.o., all of which offer mobile services. Rates are the same all over the Slovak Republic. Gas and electricity supply rates are the same for each whole region. Water supply rates and sewage fees are independent and thus vary from district to district.

Economy and Industry

The region has a rich industrial heritage. The food industry predominates in the fertile South, while the North is home to consumer industries. The industrial center Trnava is home to various industries ranging from machinery to glass production. Jobs in the manufacturing sector account for 40% of the region's employment.

Structure of Industry

The region's main sectors are automotive, electrotechnics, metallurgy, chemistry and the glass industry. This situation may be improved by the shift towards higher added value production, especially in engineering and electronics, which has been noticeable recently due to the activities of several foreign investors.

Chemical industry - important company: Tatrachema, výrobné družstvo Trnava – production and sale chemical and cleaning equipments (www.tatrachema.sk), Glass industry – important company Johns Manville Slovakia, a.s. – production glassy fibre and sale glass-fiber reinforced products (www.jm.com). Non-industrial sectors in the region

The natural potential of the Trnava region has in the past made it the most important agricultural area of Slovakia. The fertile soil and mild climate are favourable, especially for growing corn, which is why the southern part of the region is sometimes called "The Rye Island". Currently, 16% of the region's working population is employed in agriculture.

Natural resources in the Trnava region are concentrated mostly in the northern part. These include natural gas and crude oil deposits in and quarries producing various raw materials for construction. The presence of several mineral springs, which are essential assets for the tourism in the region, is also worth mentioning.

Unemployment

The unemployment rate has been steadily decreasing in the last few years, with some growth in 2008 and 2009 due to the effects of the financial crisis. It reached 7.17% in 2009. Besides the unemployed, there is the possibility of the economically active population in the region commuting to other regions or to neighbouring countries. In the case of the Trnava region this amounts to approximately 36 000 economically active inhabitants.
