UGC-Human Resource Development Centre Jadavpur University UGC-Human Resource Development Centre Jadavpur University Provisional Selection List for 67th Orientation Programme IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Course will commence from November 13, 2017 and will continue up to December 11, 2017. It is a 24 days programme. All Saturdays are working days. Attendance for 144 contact hours including the Inaugural Session is mandatory to complete the Orientation Program and receive Completion Certificates. TA/DA will be paid as per the addresses mentioned in the application forms. The teachers of colleges that do not yet come within the purview of Section 12(B) are not eligible for TA/DA and other allowances for attending these courses as per UGC guideline. Selected candidates must submit their Confirmation letter along with one Bank Draft (preferably drawn on SBI) of Rs. 1000/- (Rupees One Thousand Only) in favour of ”JADAVPUR UNIVERSITY”, payable at Kolkata at the office of UGC-HRDC, J.U. on or before November 6, 2017 within 4:00 P.M. either by post (The Director, UGC-Human Resource Development Centre, Jadavpur University Salt Lake Campus. Plot-8, Block-LB, Sector – III, Salt Lake City, Kolkata – 700098) or by hand. Otherwise the candidature will be cancelled and the seat will be offered to the next one. 2. If there is any vacancy against the above-mentioned seats due to non-submission of consent letter, letter of Service-confirmation and demand draft and/or cancellation of selection upon verification of documents, then a second selection list shall be published on November 7, 2017 after 4:00 PM. 3.     SETTING THE STAGE: A MATERIALIST SEMIOTIC ANALYSIS OF CONTEMPORARY BENGALI GROUP THEATRE FROM KOLKATA, INDIA by ARNAB BANERJI (Under the Direction of Farley Richmond) ABSTRACT This dissertation studies select performance examples from various group theatre companies in Kolkata, India during a fieldwork conducted in Kolkata between August 2012 and July 2013 using the materialist semiotic performance analysis. Research into Bengali group theatre has overlooked the effect of the conditions of production and reception on meaning making in theatre. Extant research focuses on the history of the group theatre, individuals, groups, and the socially conscious and political nature of this theatre. The unique nature of this theatre culture (or any other theatre culture) can only be understood fully if the conditions within which such theatre is produced and received studied along with the performance event itself. This dissertation is an attempt to fill this lacuna in Bengali group theatre scholarship. Materialist semiotic performance analysis serves as the theoretical framework for this study. The materialist semiotic performance analysis is a theoretical tool that examines the theatre event by locating it within definite material conditions of production and reception like organization, funding, training, availability of spaces and the public discourse on theatre. The data presented in this dissertation was gathered in Kolkata using: auto-ethnography, participant observation, sample survey, and archival research. The conditions of production and reception are each examined and presented in isolation followed by case studies. The case studies bring the elements studied in the preceding section together to demonstrate how they function together in a performance event. The studies represent the vast array of theatre in Kolkata and allow the findings from the second part of the dissertation to be tested across a variety of conditions of production and reception.

    Swapan Chakravorty (1954-) is the first Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore Distinguished University Professor in the Humanities at Presidency University, Kolkata. He has been Professor of English, Jadavpur University (1985-2015), Director General, National Library, Kolkata (2010-2013), and Secretary and Curator of the Victoria Memorial Hall (2012-2013). Educated at Presidency College, Jadavpur University and Oxford University, Professor Chakravorty writes in English and Bengali. He has held visiting assignments at the Universiti Malaya, the University of Alabama and the University of London. His books include Society and Politics in the Plays of Thomas Middleton (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1996), Conversations with Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak (with Suzana Milevska and Tani E. Barlow) (London: Seagull, 2007), Bangalir ingreji sahityacharcha (Kolkata: Anustup, 2006), and Shakespeare (Kolkata: Papyrus, 1999).     SUPRIYA CHAUDHURI Brief biographical description: Supriya Chaudhuri is Professor of English (Emerita) at Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India, and was Director of the School of Languages and Linguistics (2003-2013), Head of the Department of English (1995-97), and Co-ordinator of its Centre of Advanced Study (2001-13). She has held the posts of Assistant Professor of English, Presidency College, Calcutta (1975 -85), Reader in English, Jadavpur University (1985-93), and Professor of English, Jadavpur University (1993-2013; Emerita, 2013-). She was educated at Presidency College, Kolkata, and the University of Oxford, taking First Class Honours in English from St Hilda‟s College in 1975 (State Scholar, 1973-75), MA (1979), and a D.Phil in English Renaissance Literature in 1981 (Inlaks Scholar, St Anne‟s College, 1978-81). Chaudhuri has held visiting appointments at the University of Cambridge, University of Paris (Sorbonne) and University of Virginia. She has been a member of the Organizing Committee for the ISA World Shakespeare Congress, Stratford and London, 2016. She was Chairperson of the Government of India (Ministry of Human Resource Development) Committee for an Innovation University for the Liberal Arts and has advised on research and higher education policies both in her university and nationally as a member of committees set up by the University Grants Commission and the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. She is a member of the Advisory Board, National Library of India. In 2006-07 she was one of the judges for the Commonwealth Literature Prize, and over 2012-16 for the Crossword and Sahitya Akademi Translation Prizes.
