Colosi In a way, his [Pope John Paul II’s] undisputed contribution to Christian thought can be understood as a profound meditation on the person. He enriched and expanded the concept in his encyclicals and other writings. These texts represent a patrimony to be received, collected and assimilated with care.1 - Pope Benedict XVI INTRODUCTION Throughout the writings of Karol Wojtyła, both before and after he became Pope John Paul II, one finds expressions of gratitude and indebtedness to the philosopher Max Scheler. It is also well known that in his Habilitationsschrift,2 Wojtyła concluded that Max Scheler’s ethical system cannot cohere with Christian ethics. This state of affairs gives rise to the question: which of the ideas of Scheler did Wojtyła embrace and which did he reject? And also, what was Wojtyła’s overall attitude towards and assessment of Scheler? A look through all the works of Wojtyła reveals numerous expressions of gratitude to Scheler for philosophical insights which Wojtyła embraced and built upon, among them this explanation of his sources for The Acting Person, Granted the author’s acquaintance with traditional Aristotelian thought, it is however the work of Max Scheler that has been a major influence upon his reflection. In my overall conception of the person envisaged through the mechanisms of his operative systems and their variations, as presented here, may indeed be seen the Schelerian foundation studied in my previous work.3 I have listed many further examples in the appendix to this paper. -

Max Scheler (1874-1928) is one of the most original and influential figures in modem German philosophy. He is an important figure in the phenomenological movement on one side, and he is one of the founders of philosophical anthropology on the other. Although his writing project on Philosophische Anthropologie could not be completed by the end of his life, many insights on the problem of man can be found in the other works of Scheler. The aim of this thesis is to re-construct Scheler丨s philosophical anthropology by analysing the concepts of person and man. "What is man's place in nature?" This is the main question of Scheler's philosophical anthropology. It leads us to ask another basic question, "What is man? Who is man?" This thesis is divided into four chapters. -

Advisor: Richard Tuck Adriana Alfaro Altamirano The Belief in Intuition: A Political-philosophical Reading of Henri Bergson and Max Scheler Abstract This dissertation examines the ethico-political implications of Henri Bergson and Max Scheler’s belief in intuition. Unlike many later philosophers, and against various predecessors and contemporaries—from idealists (ancient and early-modern), to neo-Kantians, Freudians, Marxists, pragmatists, and positivists—they believed that there is a human faculty, beyond reason and sensibility, that gives us access to a privileged kind of knowledge, namely “intuition.” The latter provides knowledge about something that is both deeper and more complex than matter, but still empirical; something given in experience, but not only through the senses. -

Pages 67-92. “Der Katholizismus, nicht der Protestantismus, muß zu Ende gedacht werden.”1 Judging from the superlatives they use to characterize each other’s work, Scheler and Heidegger seem to have formed something of a mutual admiration society. At the conclusion to his notes on Heidegger’s Being and Time, Scheler describes the work as “the most original work that we possess in contemporary German philosophy, the freeest and most independent of philosophical traditions: a radical and yet rigorously scientific assault on philosophy’s highest problems.”2 For his part, Heidegger is moved, upon hearing of Scheler’s sudden death in the spring of 1928, to eulogize him as “the strongest philosophical force in Germany, nay, in all of Europe - and even in all contemporary philosophy.”3 Heidegger goes on to cite Scheler’s early grasp and advancement of phenomenology’s novel potential (most notably in Der Formalismusbegriff in der Ethik und die materiale Wertethik), “the totality of his questioning,” and his “uncommon nose” for ever-emerging novel possibilities on the horizon. After noting the considerable changes, some filled with torment and despair, that Scheler’s thinking underwent over the years, Heidegger, in obvious admiration, attributes that tumultuousness to the fact that Scheler was “possessed” and what possessed him was philosophy.4 On Pentecost Sunday, 1929 Heidegger pens the final lines to the foreword to his Kant und das Problem der Metaphysik by dedicating the work “to the memory of Max Scheler.”5 Yet far more important than such praise as a sign of genuine regard between thinkers is the time each takes to understand the other’s work, subjecting it to searching critique. -

Immediately after his publication of Sein und Zeit (1927), Heidegger began to reframe his approach to the question of being. By his own admission, a principal problem with Sein und Zeit is that it describes the disclosure of Dasein but fails to describe how being discloses itself to Dasein. A recurring observation in Heidegger’s later thought is that, since Plato’s introduction of the forms and Aristotle’s structuring of logic, philosophy has obscured the fundamental question of being (Grundfrage), substituting instead what he calls “the guiding question [Leitfrage],” namely, the inquiry into the “being of beings.” In order to free himself from this alleged obscurity, Heidegger begins an investigation of the Presocratics, and a pivotal moment in this investigation is his lecture course of 1942-43, Parmenides, on the mythical proem of Parmenides’s poem. Many scholars have explored Heidegger’s writings on truth in article-length works; a few, including Bambach and Caputo, have published longer works placing Parmenides in a developmental context, but even these do not make the lecture course their primary focus, and their assessments do not always take Heidegger’s ideas seriously on their own terms. -
