Glossary of Fashion & Style Terms A A-Line Dress (or Trapeze Dress) See A-Line Skirt A-Line Skirt (or Trapeze Skirt) An A-line skirt is a skirt that is fitted at the hips and gradually widens towards the hem, giving the impression of the shape of a capital letter A. The term is also used to describe dresses and coats with a similar shape. Aviator Jacket See Bomber Jacket. B Biker Boots Biker boots are associated with motorcycle riders and range from above ankle to below knee boots. They have an outside of a typical boot but a low heel to control the motorcycle. To improve motorcycle safety, motorcycle boots are generally made from a thick, heavy leather. Biker Jacket A short, close-fitting leather jacket with zips and studs, often worn by motorcyclists. Bomber Jacket (or Aviator Jacket) The flight jacket, bomber jacket, or bombardier jackett refers to a garment originally created for pilots. They eventually became part of popular culture and apparel. C Cocktail Dress Knee-length or shorter dresses (not a career dress). D Dolman Sleeves A full sleeve that is very wide at the armhole and narrow at the wrist. H Harem Pants (or Sarouel Pants) Baggy pants tapered at the ankle. The crotch area is loose and baggy as if it were cut to be a skirt. The legs, from the knees down, are fitted. Traditional harem pants can be extremely large and baggy, with a very wide and full fit, very roomy, loose fitting, oversized, puffy, spacious, with elastic in waist and at ankles, and with the crotch below the knee almost to the ground. J Jodhpur Pants Jodhpurs are flared at the hip and snug-fitting only from just below the knee to the ankle. K Kimono Sleeve Cut as part of the bodice, a kimono sleeve has a wide, sloping shape. P Peep-Toes A peep toe shoe is a woman's shoe (usually a pump, slingback, bootie, or any other dress shoe) in which there is an opening at the toe-box which allows the toes to show. Pumps (or court shoes) A heeled slip-on shoe with a low-cut front and usually without a fastening. However, some have an ankle strap. R Raglan Sleeves A raglan sleeve is a type of sleeve whose distinguishing characteristic is to extend in one piece fully to the collar, leaving a diagonal seam from underarm to collarbone. It is popular in sports and exercise wear. S Sarouel Pants See Harem Pants Sheath Dress In fashion, a sheath dress is a type of dress designed to fit close to the body, relatively unadorned. Unlike the shorter cocktail dress and the longer ballroom dress, a sheath dress typically falls around the knees or lower thighs. Shift Dress A shift dress is a short dress that hangs loose from the shoulders with very little or no waist definition. It is suitable for all body types and sizes - anyone can wear the solid design. It has been popular since the 1960s. Though it is easy to shift or move around in a "shift dress," the term signifies a shift in culture. When the dress became popular in the late 1950s, American youth culture was at its height. The dress represented the youthful, free and revolutionary attitudes of the time. Skinny Pants/Jeans Skinny pants/jeans have a snug fit through the legs and end in a small leg opening. Skinny pants taper completely at the bottom of the leg. Slim-Fit Pants/Jeans Slim-fit pants/jeans or skinny pants/jeans have a snug fit through the legs and end in a small leg opening. They're a little larger at the bottom of the leg than skinny pants. Slingback Shoe A slingback is a type of woman's shoe that is backless and is characterized by a strap that crosses behind the heel or ankle. A slingback is distinguishable from an ankle-strap shoe in that the latter has a strap that completely encircles the ankle. Slouchy Pants - Sarouhel Pants Slouchy pants have a baggy, relaxed, billowy style that tapers near the ankle. Slouchy pants come in a variety of styles from harem-style to structured or cropped.
